(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Names] Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass).
Li Shizhen stated: These names are all derived from their shapes.
[Collection and Explanation] Chen Zangqi stated: It grows as a vine on rocks. The leaves resemble the operculum of a snail, are slightly reddish in color, and shiny like a mirror. There is sparse hair on the underside. It is a small herb.
[Flavor and Properties] Pungent.
[Indications] Carbuncles and swellings, wind-rash, Hongjiaojiao (swelling and pain in the feet/ankles), and swelling: Mash fresh and apply externally. Alternatively, decoct in water and wash the swollen area (Chen Zangqi). Treat hematuria (blood in urine), hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), and toothache due to dental caries (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: According to records, Chen Rihua's *Jingyan Fang* [Prescriptions for Experience] mentions: A man aged twenty-six suddenly experienced passing a few drops of bright red blood after urination without pain. This condition persisted for one month and worsened upon drinking alcohol. Zhang Kang, a local physician, prescribed a vessel of herbal juice mixed with a little honey and water, administered in two doses, resulting in a cure. When asked for the prescription, it was revealed to be Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass).
[Attached Prescriptions] Seven new prescriptions.
Hematemesis and Epistaxis: Wash Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass), mash it, and take with wine. (*Zhu Shi Ji Yan Fang* [Collected Verified Prescriptions by Mr. Zhu]).
Toothache caused by worms: *Qiankun Shengyi* states: Use an appropriate amount of Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass), mash it together with mud from the bottom of a water vat into a paste, add two or three drops of sesame oil, and mix evenly. Apply to the cheek on the painful side. *Yang Shi Jia Cang Fang* [Family Preserved Formulas by Master Yang] states: Take half a handful of Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass), add two drops of sesame oil and a pinch of salt, and crush finely. If the pain is on the left, stuff the right ear; if on the right, stuff the left ear. Seal the ear opening with a thin mud cake to block air, and lie on your side. After one or two shichen (2-4 hours), remove the mud and place the herb in water to observe if any worms float out. Those present for a long time are black, intermediate ones are brown, and new ones are white. This must be performed before noon. Xu Ke'an's wet nurse suffered from this condition and could not eat; after using this method, several worms were expelled, and she recovered.
Infantile Head Sores: Dry Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass) and grind into powder. Mix with Qingfen (Calamina Powder) and sesame oil, then apply externally. Immediate effect. (*Yang Shi Jia Cang Fang* [Family Preserved Formulas by Master Yang]).
Finger Swelling and Toxicity, as well as Malignant Ulcers on Fingers, for Detoxification and Pain Relief: Mash Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass) and apply externally. (*Shou Yu Shen Fang* [Divine Formula for Longevity]).
Snake-Coiling Malignant Ulcer (Herpes Zoster): Mash Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass) with salt and apply externally for excellent results.
Antidote for Shu Mang Du (Poison from Shu Mang snake/insect): Mix one cup of natural juice from Jingmian Cao (Mirror Grass) with one cup of refined oil and ingest. Toxins will be discharged three to five times subsequently. Follow up with meat congee to nourish the body; do not delay. (Zhang Gao, *Yi Shuo* [Medical Discourse]).
