(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Correction] Merged into "Wudu Cao" (Five-Poison Herb) in the *Shiyi* (Supplementary Material) section.
[Names] Chibili (Red Pothos; *Bencao Gangmu*), Wudu Cao (Five-Poison Herb; *Shiyi*), Mai (*Tujing*).
Li Shizhen stated: The details were not thoroughly investigated.
[Collection and Explanation] Su Gong said: It grows in valleys everywhere. It is a vine, with leaves resembling those of *Metaplexis japonica* (Luoli). The root bark is dark red-black, and the flesh is yellow-red. The roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the sun.
Su Song said: It is said to be found everywhere, but currently only grows on Mount Hua. In spring and summer, shoots emerge, forming vines that wrap around trees and grass, with reddish stems. The leaves are green, resembling buckwheat leaves. In July, white flowers bloom, similar to buckwheat flowers. It bears green seeds. The roots resemble those of *Smilax* (Baqia), with purple-red bark and yellow-red flesh. The roots are harvested in August, dried, and stored.
Chen Cangqi said: Wudu Cao grows in the flatlands of Jiangdong. Its flowers and leaves resemble buckwheat. The roots are tight and hard, resembling *Polystichum setiferum* (Gouji). It is also called She Xian (Snake Tendon); although the name is the same, the substance is different.
Li Shizhen said: Wudu Cao is identical to Chidili; they are now merged into one entry.
Root
[Processing] Lei Xiao said: Upon harvesting, cut into fine segments. Place together with Indigofera leaves and roots into a raw silk bag. Steam for one Fushi (a traditional Chinese time unit, approx. 2 hours). Remove the Indigofera leaves and dry for use.
[Flavor and Property] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
Chen Cangqi said: Sour, neutral. Can mitigate the effects of Cinnabar (Dansha).
[Therapeutic Actions] Treats various types of dysentery (red, white, cold, and hot); stops bleeding and breaks blood stasis; treats leukorrhea (red and white discharge); promotes tissue regeneration (*Tang Bencao*). Treats carbuncles, malignant sores, toxic swellings, erysipelas (Chi Bai You Zhen), and bites from insects, silkworms, snakes, and dogs. Apply using vinegar grinding or external application; alternatively, crush stems and leaves for external application. If concerned about toxins entering the abdomen, boil the juice and drink it (Chen Cangqi).
[Innovation/Analysis] Li Shizhen said: In Zhang Wenzhong's *Beiji Fang* (Emergency Formulas) from the Tang Dynasty, it is used in the formula for Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill) to treat various types of dysentery (green, red, yellow, white). Thus, its efficacy lies in cooling blood and detoxifying, which can be understood.
[Attached Formulas] Two old formulas. For pediatric heat sores appearing all over the body and face, resembling burns: Apply powder of Chidili externally (*Waitai Mi Yao*). For fire burns to eliminate scars: Mix powder of Chidili with oil and apply topically (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
