(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Names] Lei Xi (Thunder Wedge).
Li Shizhen stated: The old texts wrote it as "Zhen" [Needle] and "Xie" [Dregs], which was incorrect.
[Collection and Explanation] Zang Qi said: This object is sought after where lightning strikes; digging three chi underground will reveal it. Its shape varies; some resemble axes or knives, others resemble files, and some have two holes installed. One account states it originates from Leizhou and the mountainous and marshy areas of Hedong, obtained after a thunderstorm. It mostly resembles an axe in color, with dark green and black mottling, and is hard as jade. Some say it is stone manufactured by humans and offered to the Heavenly Court (Tian Cao), but the facts are unknown.
Li Shizhen stated: According to *Lei Shu* [Book of Thunder]: The Lei Fu [Thunder Axe] resembles an axe and is made of copper or iron. The Lei Zuan [Thunder Drill] resembles a chisel and is made of stone, purple-black in color. The Lei Chui [Thunder Hammer] weighs several jin, and the Lei Zuan is over one chi long; both are like steel, used by the Thunder God to split or strike objects. The Lei Huan [Thunder Ring] resembles a jade ring and was dropped by the Thunder God. The Lei Zhu [Thunder Pearl] was spat out by divine dragons and left behind, emitting light that fills the room at night. Furthermore, *Bowuzhi* [Inquiries into Various Things] records that small stones resembling small axes are often seen in the human world, named Pili Fu [Thunderbolt Axe], also known as Pili Xi [Thunderbolt Wedge]. *Xuanzhongji* [Record of the Mysterious Middle] claims there is a country west of Yumen Pass with a temple on a mountain, where people annually mine drills for the use of the Thunder God. This is absurd talk. Although thunder is the sound generated by the friction and collision of Yin and Yang energies, it is actually governed by divine entities. Therefore, it coincides with the awakening of all things during Jingzhe [Awakening of Insects solar term]; the axes, drills, chisels, and hammers are all physical objects. If one argues that phenomena form in heaven and shapes form on earth, such as meteorites falling as stones, then do metallic stones, millet, wheat, hair, blood, and other strange items falling during rain also form shapes on earth? It must be that divine entities in the Great Void [Tai Xu] cause this. During the Chen dynasty, Su Dao's Lei Chui weighed nine jin. During the Song dynasty, Shen Kuo found a Lei Xi under a tree struck by lightning, resembling an axe but without a hole. The way of ghosts and gods is profound and subtle, truly unfathomable.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Non-toxic.
[Therapeutic Actions] Treats sudden fright causing loss of heart-mind control, mental confusion where one does not recognize people, and Shi Lin [Stone Strangury / Urinary Calculus].
