[Collected Explanations]
Li Shizhen said: Rice meals can be made from various grains, each following the nature of the rice; see the relevant entry for details. However, certain rice preparations used in medicine cannot be classified together and should be listed separately. Generally, they are made from glutinous rice (*Oryza sativa* var. *glutinosa*), broomcorn millet (*Panicum miliaceum*), or foxtail millet (*Setaria italica*).
Freshly Cooked Rice
[Indications] For bedwetting, take one cup of hot rice, pour it onto the wetted area, mix it, and feed it to the patient without letting them know. Additionally, applying it warm to swellings and toxic sores is effective (Li Shizhen).
Cold Food Rice
This refers to rice prepared according to the Cold Food Festival tradition.
[Indications] To eliminate scars and miscellaneous sores, grind into powder and apply externally (Chen Cangqi). Burn to ash and take with wine to treat accumulations caused by consuming raw rice drinks, characterized by yellowish complexion, emaciation, and abdominal pain; this is very effective (Sun Simiao). For relapse of *Shanghan* (Cold Damage disease) due to improper diet after recovery, burn this rice to ash, grind it, and take two to three qian with rice water; it is effective (Li Shizhen).
Kitchen Stove Worship Rice
[Indications] For sudden dysphagia (choking), take one grain and eat it; it will pass immediately. Burn to ash, grind, and apply to sores in the nose (Li Shizhen).
Rice Residue from the Pot Edge
[Indications] For sores growing in the nose, burn to ash, grind, and apply (Li Shizhen).
Residual Rice from Teeth
[Indications] For pain and toxicity from scorpion bites, apply externally to stop pain immediately (Li Shizhen).
*Sun* Fan (Water Rice)
"Sun" is pronounced like "sun"; it refers to watery rice gruel.
[Indications] Consumed hot, it resolves thirst and removes irritability (Li Shizhen).
Lotus Leaf-Baked Rice
[Indications] Strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, unblocks the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and supports the ascending Qi of generation (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation]
Li Gao said: Zhang Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) of the Yishui School uses *Zhizhu Wan* (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill), wrapping the pills in lotus leaves and baking rice. The lotus plant has a green color and hollow structure, corresponding to the Wind-Wood image of the Zhen trigram. In the human body, it corresponds to the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao meridians, serving as the root for the transformation and generation of all things. Using this substance facilitates transformation; how could Stomach Qi fail to ascend? Furthermore, combining baked rice with herbs cooperates with *Baizhu* (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) to nourish Grain Qi, thickening the Stomach Qi to prevent further injury; its benefits are vast and profound.
Li Shizhen said: According to Han Zhihe's *Yitong*, people in the Southeast were unfamiliar with northern steaming methods for cooking rice, often using the term "shao" (burn/roast) by analogy to stir-frying. Consequently, they erroneously believed that lotus leaf-wrapped rice should be roasted in ashes. Even Zhu Danxi did not refute this. However, if fresh lotus leaves are boiled in water to make a decoction, and glutinous rice is cooked in this liquid, the flavor and properties remain intact. Generally, when making glutinous rice porridge/meals, using lotus leaf decoction broadens the Middle Jiao; mustard leaf decoction resolves phlegm; perilla decoction promotes Qi circulation and releases the exterior; mint decoction clears heat; and bamboo leaf decoction dispels summerheat. These principles can be extrapolated to other cases.
