[Name] Douloupo Xiang (Dhūpaka).
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: Fengxiang Zhi (Liquidambar Resin) grows in the mountains of Jianghuai and Huling. The tree can be nearly one zhang tall; its leaves are green, long, with serrated edges, resembling the leaves of small thistle but fragrant, growing opposite each other on the nodes. Its roots resemble those of Goji berries but are larger, becoming highly fragrant when roasted. The *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* states: "In front of the altar... root..." (The original text here is incomplete).
[Flavor and Toxicity] Bitter, astringent, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] For furuncles and toxic swellings on the head. Grind into powder, mix with sesame oil, apply topically; necrotic tissue will fall off within seven days (Li Shizhen).
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Name] Huamu Xiang, Zhan Xiang.
[Collected Explanations] Chen Zangqi stated: Bilixiang grows in high mountains. Its leaves resemble those of old Toona trees. When crushed and placed in upstream water, fish float up with their gills exposed and die. The wood is white, and the fish remain unharmed. (Note: The phrase "wood white fish not damaged book also" appears garbled in the source; translated based on context implying the wood's property or a textual error).
[Flavor and Toxicity] Pungent, warm in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] For Guizhu Xinqi (a condition characterized by心神不安 due to pathogenic influences), it cuts off all evil qi; decoct and drink the juice. Burn as incense to kill insects and fish (Chen Zangqi).
(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Name] Baijiaoxiang (White Gum Resin).
Li Shizhen stated: The branches of the Feng tree are weak and sway easily, hence the character includes "wind". It is commonly called Xiangfeng. The *Jin Guangming Jing* refers to its fragrance as Susazheluopo Xiang. Su Song stated: The *Erya* calls the Feng tree " ", saying that when wind blows, it makes a sound. The Sanskrit texts call it Saluopo Xiang.
[Collected Explanations] Su Gong stated: Fengxiang Zhi is found in major mountains everywhere.
Su Song stated: It is now very abundant in the South and Guan-Shaan regions. The trees are very tall and robust, resembling white poplars. The leaves are round and lobed, with three angles and fragrant. Flowers appear in the second lunar month, white in color. They bear fruit connected to the flower, size like a duck egg. In the eighth and ninth months, when ripe, they can be dried and burned. The *Nanfang Caomu Zhuang* states: Feng fruits are only found in Jiuzhen Commandery... There are "Fengzi Gui" (Ghost of the Feng Seed) in the South. Old Feng trees take human forms, also called Lingfeng, which are actually burls or galls. Shamans in Yue still use them for spiritual manifestations. The *Erya* commentary notes: Its resin seeps into the ground and turns into amber over a thousand years.
The wood is very hard, coming in red and white varieties; the white variety is fine-textured. Its fruit forms balls... Sun Yan's *Erya Zhengyi* states: Fengzi Gui is... Xun Bozi's *Lin Chuan Ji*... Song Qiqiu's *Huashu* states: Old Feng... Xiangzhi... (The original text contains significant lacunae and corruption here).
[Processing] Li Shizhen stated: Whenever using Fengxiang Zhi, boil it in vinegar water for twenty [units of time/boils]... (Text cuts off).
[Flavor and Toxicity] Pungent, bitter, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] For urticaria, wind-induced itching, and edema, wash with the decoction. Also treats toothache (*Tang Bencao*). Treats all carbuncles, ulcers, sores, and scabies; traumatic injuries with bleeding (hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis); promotes blood circulation and tissue regeneration, relieves pain and detoxifies. After burning, rub on teeth to prevent dental diseases forever (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Zhu Zhenheng stated: Fengxiang belongs to Metal, containing Water and Fire properties. Its nature is penetrating and unblocking, which explains why Feng trees often have insect holes; it is an essential herb for external medicine. Modern practitioners do not understand this and mistakenly use clear Pine Resin instead, which is a great error.
Lei Xiao stated: Fengxiang and Pine Resin can both adulterate Ru Xiang (Frankincense). However, Fengxiang is slightly whitish-yellow; burning it reveals its authenticity.
Li Shizhen stated: Both Fengxiang and Pine Resin can adulterate Ru Xiang. Although their efficacy is inferior to Ru Xiang, it is not far behind.
