(Pronounced "chen" with the departing tone. Listed as a lower-grade substance in *Bie Lu* [Separate Records of Famous Physicians].)
[Correction] Previously excluded due to having a name but no usable material; now transferred here.
[Names] Yunri (Same as Yunri. From *Bie Lu*), Tongli Niao (Tao Hongjing).
[Collected Explanations] *Bie Lu* states: The Zhen bird is produced in the Nanhai region.
Tao Hongjing said: The Zhen bird and the Yunri are two different birds. The Zhen bird resembles a peacock, with feathers mottled in five colors, tall and robust, with a black neck and red beak, found in the deep mountains of Guangzhou.
The Yunri resembles a black Cang chicken, making a sound similar to "Yun Tongli," hence people in Jiangdong call it the Tongli bird. Both feed on snakes; if humans mistakenly eat their meat, they die immediately, yet they can also treat snake venom. In the past, people used Zhen feathers to poison wine, hence the name "Zhen Wine," but this practice has ceased recently. Furthermore, there is a red creature in the sea resembling a dragon, named Hai Jiang (Sea Ginger), which also possesses great toxicity, exceeding that of Zhen feathers.
Su Gong said: The Jiu bird is abundant south of Shangzhou in the Jiangling region, and people are familiar with it. Its meat is fishy, toxic, and inedible.
The claim that painting wine with its feathers kills people is also an absurd fabrication. According to *Yu Pian* citing Guo Pu: The Zhen bird is as large as a vulture, with a long neck and red beak, feeding on snakes. *Shuo Wen*, *Guang Ya*, and *Huainanzi* all identify the Zhen as the Yunri. People in Jiaozhou and Guangzhou also say the Yunri is the Zhen, another name for the Tongli bird, and not resembling a peacock at all. Tao Hongjing was deceived by others.
Li Shizhen said: According to *Er Ya Yi*: The Zhen bird resembles an eagle but is larger, shaped like a kite, purple-black in color, with a red beak and black eyes, and a neck seven or eight inches long. The male is called Yunri, and the female Yin Xie. When the Yunri cries, the weather is clear; when the Yin Xie cries, it rains. It eats snakes and acorns. Knowing that snakes are under trees or stones, it performs the Yu Bu (Great Yu's Step) to exorcise them; soon after, wood falls and stones collapse, revealing the snake. If the snake enters its mouth, it rots instantly. Its feces and urine falling on stones cause the stones to turn yellow and rot. Wherever it drinks, all insects drinking the water die. Only Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao) can resolve its toxicity. Additionally, Yang Lianfu's *Tieya Ji* states: The Zhen bird is produced in the Huangmei mountains of Qizhou, resembling a Xunhu fox, with a sound like beating a waist drum. It nests at the top of large trees.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Highly toxic. Enters the five zang organs, causing corrosion and death (*Bie Lu*).
[Therapeutic Actions] Wearing it kills pit viper venom (*Bie Lu*).
Li Shizhen said: For human bites from snakes, scraping the powder and applying it externally results in immediate healing.
