[Collected Explanations] Su Gong stated: Huangfan (Yellow Alum) is required by alchemists and is also used in leather dyeing.
Li Shizhen stated: Huangfan (Yellow Alum) sourced from Guazhou and Shazhou in Shaanxi, or imported by ship, is of the highest quality. It is yellow in color and resembles Hu Tong Lei (Tamarisk Gum). Some people pick out the yellow pieces from Lvfan (Green Vitriol) to pass them off as genuine, which is not true. The variety from Persia has golden thread-like patterns when broken, called Jin Xian Fan (Gold-line Alum), and can reveal decorative patterns when used to sharpen swords and knives. *Dan Fang Jing Yuan* states: "Wu Se Shan Zhi" (Five-colored Mountain Fat) refers to Wu Huangfan (Wu Yellow Alum).
[Properties and Flavor] Sour, astringent, and salty; toxic.
[Indications] Treats Ding Chuang (furuncles/carbuncles) and promotes flesh regeneration (Su Gong). Treats Ye Ji Zhi (hemorrhoids resembling wild pheasant droppings), E Chuang (malignant sores), Jie Xuan (scabies and tinea) (Li [Shi]). Treats toothache caused by Wind-Heat in the Yangming channel (Li Gao).
[Attached Prescriptions] Five new prescriptions.

Add two liang of powdered Huangfan Shi (Yellow Alum Stone) and one liang of Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate/White Lead). Mix with lard to form a paste. Cleanse the ulcer thoroughly before application. Additionally, apply Hu Fen over the ointment. This is a secret formula from the Gan family. (*Zhou Hou Fang*)
Body scars: Use eight fen each of Huangfan Shi (Yellow Alum Stone, burned until juices are exhausted) and Hu Fen (White Lead, stir-fried until yellow). Grind finely, mix with lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month to form a paste. Rub the affected area with raw cloth until painful, then apply the medicine five times.
