(Recorded in the Middle Category of the *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
[Correction] Transferred from the Wood Section to this section.
Su Song stated: Longan is primarily used as a fruit and has not been seen used as medicine. Including it in the Wood Section of the Materia Medica is incorrect.
[Names] Longmu (from *Wu Pu Bencao*), Yuanyan (common name), Yizhi (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*), Yalizhi (from *Kaibao Bencao*), Lizhinu, Lizhu, Yanluan, Mibi, Jiaolei.
Li Shizhen stated: "Longyan" and "Longmu" are named based on their shape resembling a dragon's eye. *Wu Pu Bencao* calls it Longmu, also referred to as Bibai. Cao Xian's *Bo Ya* calls it Yizhi.
Tao Hongjing stated: Longan is produced in Guangzhou; it is not Yizhi (*Alpinia oxyphylla*, Chinese Yellow Cardamom Seed), but likely an alias used by local people.
Su Song cited earlier texts: Sweet flavor enters the Spleen and can enhance human intelligence, hence the name Yizhi, which is not the current Yizhiren (*Alpinia oxyphylla*).
Su Song stated: When Lychee season ends, Longan ripens immediately, so southerners call it "Lychee Slave." It is also called Mudan. Dried and sent far away, northerners consider it a fine fruit and call it Yalizhi.
[Collection of Explanations] *Mingyi Bielu* states: Longan grows in the valleys of Nanhai. Also known as Yizhi. The larger ones resemble Areca nut (*Betel Nut*).
Su Gong stated: The Longan tree resembles the Lychee tree; its leaves are like those of Malus asiatica (Chinese Pear); the flowers are white. The fruit resembles Areca nut, with scaly armor, and is as large as a sparrow's egg.
Su Song stated: Currently, it is found in Fujian, Guangdong, and along the Shu roads where Lychees are produced. Ji Han's *Nanfang Caomu Zhuang* says: The tree is one or two zhang high, resembling Lychee but with smaller branches and leaves, remaining evergreen through winter. In late spring and early summer, it opens small white flowers. In July, the fruit ripens; the shell is yellowish-green with patterns resembling scales, round in shape, as large as a pellet, and the pit resembles that of certain nuts but is not hard. The flesh is thinner than Lychee, white with juice, and sweet as honey. The yield is abundant, with thirty to forty fruits per branch, clustered like grapes. During the Han Dynasty, Nanhai frequently paid tribute with this item, causing great harm to the people. Tang Qiang, Magistrate of Linwu, submitted a memorial describing the situation. Emperor He was moved by his words and issued an edict to stop the tribute.
Li Shizhen stated: Longan is perfectly round; comparing it to Areca nut in *Mingyi Bielu* and Su Gong's commentary is quite inaccurate. The wood fears cold; harvesting can only begin after the White Dew solar term. After sun-drying and baking until dry, the dried clusters are named Longyan Jin. According to Fan Chengda's *Guihai Zhi*, there is a "Mountain Longan" produced in Guangxi, green in color, with flesh like Longan, ripening in summer for consumption. This is likely the wild variety of Longan?
Fruit
[Flavor and Toxicity] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic. Su Gong stated: Sweet, sour, warm. Li Pengfei stated: If consumed raw after blanching in boiling water, it does not damage the Spleen.
[Indications] Treats evil qi in the five zang organs, calms the spirit, and alleviates anorexia. Removes gu poison and expels three types of parasites. Long-term use strengthens the soul and enhances mental clarity, lightens the body, prevents aging, and facilitates spiritual connection (*Shennong Bencao Jing*). Opens the stomach, benefits the Spleen, tonifies deficiency, and enhances intelligence (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Among foods, Lychee is considered precious, but for nourishing benefits, Longan is superior. This is because Lychee is hot in nature, whereas Longan is neutral and mild. Yan Yonghe's *Jisheng Fang* contains the Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) for treating heart-spleen deficiency caused by overthinking and labor, taking advantage of the principle that sweet flavor enters the Spleen and enhances intelligence.
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction): Treats excessive overthinking, heart-spleen injury from labor, forgetfulness, palpitations and anxiety, empty irritability and insomnia, spontaneous sweating, and fright palpitations. Use Longan Aril, Fried Sour Jujube Seed (*Suanzaoren*), Honey-fried Astragalus Root (*Huangqi*), Baked Atractylodes Rhizome (*Baizhu*), Poria with Hostwood (*Fushen*), each 1 liang; Costus Root (*Muxiang*) and Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (*Renshen*), each 0.5 liang; Honey-fried Licorice Root (*Zhigancao*), 2.5 qian. Coarsely crush. For each dose...
Pit/Seed
[Indications] Treats bromhidrosis (fox odor). Six pits, ground together with two to seven peppercorns, apply when sweating occurs (Li Shizhen).
