**Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung):** The qi is warm. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats cold qi accumulation in the heart and abdomen, five types of infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome) in children, wards off epidemics, treats intestinal wind (blood in stool), and unblocks meridians and collaterals. It treats amenorrhea in women. (Grind with wine for use.)
Wulingzhi has a warm qi. It inherits the mild wood qi of spring and enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its taste is sweet and non-toxic; it obtains the central earth taste of the earth and enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Both its qi and taste are ascending, which is Yang. The heart and abdomen are areas traversed by the Taiyin and Jueyin meridians. Cold causes cold qi to congeal. Wulingzhi treats this because its warm qi can dispel cold. Its warm qi can smooth the Liver; its sweet taste can tonify the Spleen. Although infantile Gan syndrome is divided into five types, all arise from Liver Qi stagnation and Spleen Qi deficiency. Therefore, it generally treats all five types. Sweet taste harmonizes, so it wards off epidemics. Long-standing wind invading the interior becomes intestinal wind. Wulingzhi's warm qi reaches the Liver; the Liver governs wind and stores blood, so it treats intestinal wind. Warmth promotes circulation, so it benefits the meridians and collaterals. The Spleen controls blood, and the Liver stores blood; when blood is warm, it flows smoothly, so it treats amenorrhea.
**Prescription Formulation:**
Combine Wulingzhi with Zelan (Lycopus Herba), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Yimucao (Leonuri Herba), Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), and Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). Treat incomplete expulsion of lochia. Combine with Jiangxiang (Daemonorops Draco), Hongqu (Red Yeast Rice), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Honghua, Yanhusuo, Jiucai (Allium Tuberosum), and Tongbian (Infant Urine). Treat epigastric pain due to blood stasis. Combine with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Wuyao (Linderae Radix). Treat stabbing pain due to Qi and Blood stagnation. Use raw and cooked forms equally ground into powder. Treat dizziness and loss of consciousness.
**Longgu (Fossilized Bone):** The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats Guizhu (chronic wasting disease attributed to evil spirits) in the heart and abdomen, infestations by spirits and demons, cough and asthma, dysentery with pus and blood, metrorrhagia in women, hard masses (Zhijia), and infantile heat-induced convulsions and epilepsy.
Longgu has a neutral qi. It inherits the收敛 (collecting/restraining) metal qi of autumn and enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sweet and non-toxic; it obtains the central earth taste of the earth and enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. The Dragon is the deity of the East, the chief of scaled creatures, and the bone of spiritual beings. It enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its descending qi exceeds its ascending qi, which is Yin. The heart and abdomen are areas traversed by the Taiyin meridian. When Taiyin Spleen Qi ascends, Lung Qi descends. This constitutes the Heaven and Earth within the body, preventing any Guizhu or spirit infestations from invading. Longgu’s neutral qi benefits the Lung; when the Lung is balanced, it descends. Its sweet taste benefits the Spleen; when the Spleen is harmonious, it ascends. With proper ascent and descent, the positions of Heaven and Earth are secured. Thus, it expels Guizhu and spirit infestations. Cough and asthma result from Liver Fire flaring upward and attacking the Lung. Dysentery with pus and blood results from sinking of clear Qi. Metrorrhagia results from the Liver failing to store blood. Longgu’s sweet taste can moderate Liver Fire; its warm nature (Note: Text says "warm" here despite earlier stating "neutral", likely referring to its functional movement or a textual variant) can reach the clear Qi; its sweet-neutral nature can store Liver blood. The Spleen controls blood; hard masses (Zhijia) result from Spleen blood failing to circulate and congealing. Warmth promotes movement, so it can dissipate nodules. Infantile heat-induced convulsions and epilepsy result from excessive Heart Fire lodging in the Liver causing fright and epilepsy. For fright, one should calm it. Longgu’s neutral qi calms fright.
**Prescription Formulation:**
Combine Longgu with Muli (Ostrea Concha), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus). Treat nocturnal emission. Combine with Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) and Zhusha (Cinnabaris) made into pills. Treat nocturnal emission due to mental overexertion. Combine with Jiu Zi (Allii Tuberosi Semen). Treat seminal emission. Combine with Baishi Zhi (Kaolinite). Treat diarrhea. Combine with Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Dansha (Cinnabaris), Shengdi Huang, Fushen (Poria Cum Radix), Hupo (Amber), Jinbo (Gold Leaf), Tianzhuhuang (Bambusae Calamus Taeniam), and Zhuli (Bambusae Succus). Treat adult mania/depression (Dian syndrome) and infantile convulsions and epilepsy.
