[Flavor and Nature] The nature is slightly warm. The flavor is bitter. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats cough with rebellious qi ascending, warm malaria characterized by shivering chills and fever in the skin, leukorrhea or metrorrhagia leading to infertility in women, and various malignant sores, ulcers, and metallic wounds. Decoct it and drink the liquid.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) has a warm nature, inheriting the spring-uprising Wood Qi of heaven, and enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its bitter flavor and non-toxicity derive from the Fire flavor of the southern earth, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Its qi ascends and its flavor is profound; thus, it belongs to Yang. The reason it treats cough with rebellious qi is that the Heart governs Blood, and the Liver stores Blood. When Blood is depleted, Liver Wood carries Heart Fire to attack Lung Metal, resulting in cough and rebellious qi. Danggui enters the Liver to nourish Blood and enters the Heart to clear Fire, thereby treating these conditions. The Liver corresponds to Wind, and the Heart corresponds to Fire; both Wind and Fire are Yang. Warm malaria, characterized by heat without cold, occurs when Wind and Fire invade the Lungs. Since the Lungs govern the skin and hair, shivering chills and fever manifest in the skin. This happens because the Lungs, affected by Wind and Fire pathogens, fail to secure the skin and hair. Danggui enters the Heart and Liver; when Liver Blood is sufficient, Wind settles; when Heart Blood is sufficient, Fire extinguishes, and the chills and fever in the skin heal spontaneously. Women are primarily governed by Blood. Leukorrhea/metrorrhagia and infertility are caused by Blood depletion. Danggui tonifies Blood, hence it treats these conditions. Various malignant sores and ulcers belong to Heart Fire. When Heart Blood is sufficient, Heart Fire subsides. For metallic wound blood loss, its bitter flavor clears Heart Fire, and its warm nature nourishes Blood, thus treating all such conditions. Using decoction for drinking takes advantage of the rapid and immediate efficacy of liquid medicines.
