[Huaihua (Sophorae Flos)]
The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids, heart pain, red eyes, kills parasites in the abdominal viscera, and addresses wind-heat on the skin, intestinal wind with bloody stool, and dysentery with red and white discharge. All are used after being stir-fried and ground into powder.
Huaihua has a neutral qi, inheriting the cooling metal energy of autumn, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is bitter and non-toxic, deriving from the fire flavor of the southern earth, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Both its qi and taste are descending, belonging to Yin. The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior partners; the five types of hemorrhoids are fire syndromes of the Large Intestine. Huaihua’s bitter taste clears the Heart, thus treating this condition. Fire stagnating in the Heart causes pain; neutral qi can clear heat, and bitter taste can drain downward, thus treating this condition. Red eyes indicate excess fire in the Liver. According to the principle "when there is excess, drain its child," the bitter taste clears the Heart, which is the child organ of the Liver, thereby treating it. The abdomen is the pathway of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian; the viscera here refers to the Large Intestine, which is the interior partner of the Lung. Bitter taste can kill parasites, thus treating this condition. The skin is the exterior extension of the Lung; neutral qi can disperse wind, and bitter taste can drain heat, thus treating this condition. Intestinal wind with bloody stool is caused by fire in the Large Intestine. Dysentery with red and white discharge is caused by damp-heat in the Large Intestine. Bitter taste can clear heat, so they are all stir-fried and taken as powder.
Prescription Methods:
Huaihua combined with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) treats lower bleeding; combined with Muli (Ostreae Concha) powder treats leukorrhea.
[Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex)]
The qi is cold. The taste is bitter. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats accumulated heat in the five viscera and intestines/stomach, jaundice, intestinal hemorrhoids, stops diarrhea and dysentery, and treats women's leukorrhea with red and white discharge and erosive ulcers of the yin organs. (Stir-fried with salt water.)
Huangbai has a cold qi, inheriting the freezing water energy of winter, entering the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its taste is bitter and non-toxic, deriving from the fire flavor of the southern earth, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Both its qi and taste are descending, belonging to Yin. Among the five viscera and six fu organs, the Heart is the monarch. The Heart belongs to Fire; accumulated heat is the stagnation of fire energy. Bitter taste drains heat, thus treating this condition. Jaundice is a syndrome of damp-heat in the Stomach Meridian. Intestinal hemorrhoids are a disease of fire stagnation in the Large Intestine. Diarrhea and dysentery are syndromes of damp-heat in the Large Intestine. Huangbai treats these because it enters the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney is the gate of the Stomach, and the Large Intestine is governed by the Kidney. Cold qi can clear heat, and bitter taste can dry dampness, thus treating the aforementioned syndromes. Leukorrhea with red and white discharge includes fetal leakage of blood and red/white vaginal discharge. One cause is reckless flow due to blood heat; another is downward pouring of damp-heat. Huangbai enters the Kidney; cold nature clears heat, and bitter nature dries dampness, thus treating this condition. Yin-yang erosive ulcers refer to erosive sores formed in the vulva. All sores belong to Heart Fire; Huangbai treats them because its bitter-cold nature drains fire.
Prescription Methods:
Huangbai combined with Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) nourishes Yin and descends fire; combined with Maoyu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) dispels dampness and clears heat, serving as a key herb for treating flaccidity syndrome; combined with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) drains Bladder Fire, prepared by honey-frying and grinding into powder.
Wei Dasuan Wan (Baked Garlic Pills) treat white dysentery during pregnancy; combined with Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Baifu Ling (Poria), Er Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) treat flaccidity syndrome; combined with Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) treat abdominal pain caused by fire-heat.
