[Betel Nut]
Nature and Flavor: Warm in nature. Bitter, pungent, and astringent in flavor. Non-toxic. Primarily functions to digest food, expel water retention, eliminate phlegm accumulation, kill latent parasites, and treat Taenia saginata (pinworms/roundworms).
Betel nut is warm in nature, inheriting the spring-rising Wood Qi of heaven, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its bitter, pungent, and astringent flavors are non-toxic, deriving from the dryness of Southern Fire and Western Metal on earth, entering the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian (Dry Metal), and Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Dry Metal). Its aroma and flavor descend more than they ascend, belonging to Yin. The Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian is the sea of water and grain; warmth promotes movement, and pungency promotes dispersion, thus it primarily digests food and expels water. The Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian is the official of conduction; if digestion is incomplete, water and grain stagnate, transforming into phlegm accumulation. Betel nut is warm and pungent, possessing the capacity to digest food, and bitter with the virtue of descending, hence it treats the aforementioned conditions. The three worms, Fu Shi (latent corpse worms), and Cun Bai (Taenia) are all worms transformed from damp-heat. Pungency disperses, astringency dries, and bitterness kills parasites, thus it treats these various parasitic diseases.
Prescription Applications:
Betel nut combined with Chuanlian, Bidou, Lianrou, Juhong, Hongqu, Baishao, Wumei, Gegen, and Zhike treats tenesmus after dysentery. Combined with Leiwan, Shijunzi, Baiwuyi, Lushen, Roudoukou, and Huhuanglian, it treats pediatric malnutrition and ascariasis. Combined with Liangen, Qieshi, Xihui, Yiren Gen, Guanzhong, and Wumei, it treats all types of Taenia infection. Combined with Maoshu, Caoguo, Qingpi, and Gancao, it treats malarial fevers due to miasma.
[Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis / Houpo]
Nature and Flavor: Warm in nature. Bitter in flavor. Non-toxic. Primarily treats headache caused by wind-stroke and cold damage, alternating chills and fever with palpitations and fright, blood bi syndrome with dead muscle tissue, and eliminates the three worms. (Stir-fried with ginger juice)
Houpo is warm in nature, inheriting the spring-rising Wood Qi of heaven, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its bitter flavor is non-toxic, deriving from the fire flavor of Southern Earth, entering the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Its aroma and flavor ascend more than they descend, belonging to Yang. The *Nan Jing* states: "Cold damage has five categories: wind-stroke, cold damage, damp-warmth, heat disease, and warm disease." The wind-stroke and cold damage here refer to wind-stroke syndrome. Wind Qi connects with the Liver; the Liver Meridian meets the Du Meridian at the vertex. Wind is a Yang pathogen that injures the upper part, thus causing headache. The reason for its treatment is that Houpo enters the Liver and has a warming and dispersing action. Alternating chills and fever with palpitations refers to suffering from chills and fever accompanied by palpitations. Heart deficiency leads to palpitations; Liver deficiency leads to fright. Houpo's warm nature can reach the Liver, and its bitter flavor can clear the Heart. The Liver stores Blood, and the Heart governs Blood; when blood coagulates and stagnates, Bi syndrome forms. Bitterness can drain, and warmth can move, thus it treats blood Bi. Dead muscle refers to numbness and insensitivity of skin and hair due to blood stagnation. Bitterness drains and warmth moves, thus it also treats this condition. The three worms are transformed from dampness. Bitterness dries dampness and can kill parasites, thus it eliminates worms.
Prescription Applications:
Houpo combined with Binglang, Muxiang, Chuanlian, Huashi, Chenpi, and Gancao treats early-stage dysentery. Combined with Baizhu, Renshen, Baifu Ling, and Baishao, it treats abdominal distension. Combined with Shengjiang, Chenpi, Huoxiang, Sharen, and Banxia, it treats vomiting and reflux due to stomach cold.
