[Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos)]
Nature: Neutral. Flavor: Bitter. Non-toxic. Mainly treats various wind-pathogen conditions, dizziness and vertigo, headache with swelling and pain, sensation of eyes bulging out, tearing, necrosis of skin and muscle, aversion to wind, dampness, and wind-damp bi-syndrome.
Long-term consumption promotes the circulation of Qi and Blood, lightens the body, delays aging, and prolongs life.
Ganjuhua has a neutral nature, inheriting the metallic Qi of autumn, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its bitter flavor and non-toxicity derive from the fire element of the south, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Both its nature and flavor descend, belonging to Yin. The bitter flavor clears Fire; when Fire is suppressed, Metal becomes dominant. It blooms in autumn, fully inheriting the metallic Qi of autumn, thus serving as a superior herb for pacifying Wind-Wood (Liver).
All wind syndromes are associated with the Liver. The Liver meridian connects to the eye system, emerges above the forehead, and meets the Du vessel at the vertex. When Liver Wind is excessive, Fire flares upward, attacking the head and causing dizziness. Excessive Fire causes swelling and pain. Ganjuhua treats these because its bitter flavor clears Fire, and its neutral nature restrains Wood.
The Liver opens into the eyes. When Wind is excessive and Fire flares, the eyes swell and feel as if they will bulge out. Ganjuhua treats this by pacifying the Liver and clearing Fire.
The regular branch of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian ascends to the throat, emerges on the face, and converges at the inner canthus. The Heart belongs to Fire; when Fire is severe, the Heart vessels become tense, leading to tearing. Ganjuhua treats this because its bitter and neutral properties descend Fire.
The skin is the exterior correspondence of the Lung, and muscles are the exterior correspondence of the Spleen. If Wood-Fire attacks Lung-Metal and Spleen-Earth, the skin and muscles undergo necrosis. Ganjuhua inherits Metallic Qi and possesses a Fire-like flavor, thus pacifying Wood and clearing Fire to treat skin and muscle necrosis.
It treats aversion to wind, dampness, and bi-syndrome because wind-damp bi-syndrome involves Wind, which is governed by the Liver. Ganjuhua’s neutral nature pacifies the Liver, and its bitter flavor dries Dampness.
Long-term consumption benefits Qi and Blood because the Lung governs Qi; neutral nature tonifies Lung Qi, benefiting Qi. The Heart governs Blood; bitter flavor clears Heart Fire, benefiting Blood. Benefiting Qi makes the body light; benefiting Blood enhances longevity. With both Qi and Blood benefited, prolonging life is inevitable.
Prescription Methods:
Crush Ganjuhua to extract juice for treating ding-sores (carbuncles). Collect flowers on the Double Ninth Festival, dry and powder them for oral administration to treat drunkenness that does not resolve. Take in pill form with Gouqi Zi (Lycii Fructus) to prevent ocular diseases and sores/ulcers for life. Mix equal parts of powder with Gujingcao (Valerianae Officinalis Radix et Rhizoma? *Note: Usually refers to Valeriana or similar, but strictly Gujingcao* - here kept as Gujingcao) and Lv Dou Pi (Vigna Radiata Pericarpium) to treat eye nebula (corneal opacity).
