[Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex)]
Qi is cold. Flavor is acrid. Non-toxic. It primarily treats chills and fever, wind-stroke, convulsions, and epilepsy. It expels pathogenic factors, eliminates masses (zheng) and hard accumulations, and resolves blood stasis remaining in the intestines and stomach.
It calms the five zang organs and treats carbuncles and sores.
Mudanpi has a cold qi, inheriting the cold water energy of winter from heaven, entering the Hand-Taiyang Cold-Water Small Intestine Meridian. Its acrid flavor and non-toxic nature derive from the metal flavor of the West on earth, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. The descending aspect of its qi and flavor exceeds the ascending, making it Yin. The Cold-Water Taiyang Meridian circulates on the body's surface, serving as an external defense. If the Taiyang Meridian suffers from Yin deficiency, the skin and hair pores become loose, and the external defense becomes insecure, allowing exterior pathogens to enter from outside, resulting in chills and fever. Mudanpi treats these conditions because its cold qi clears heat, and its acrid flavor disperses cold and releases the exterior. The Liver is the organ of Wind-Wood. If the Lung Meridian fails to control the Liver, Liver wind carrying turbid fire rebels upward, giving rise to symptoms of wind-stroke, convulsions, and epilepsy. Mudanpi, being acrid and cold, benefits the Lung and pacifies the Liver. When Liver Qi no longer rises and Lung Qi descends, all symptoms subside. The Small Intestine is the official of reception and transformation, interiorly-exteriorly related to the Heart. The Heart governs Blood; if Heat in the Blood flows downward and remains in the Small Intestine, stasis accumulates to form a mass (jia), which is hard and palpable. Mudanpi’s cold nature clears heat, and its acrid nature dissipates nodules, thus entering the Small Intestine to eliminate masses. The Five Zang Organs store Yin essence. Acrid and cold properties clear the blood; when the blood is pure, Yin is sufficient, and the Zang organs are at peace. When Ying (Nutritive) Blood reverses into the muscle tissue, carbuncles and sores arise. Mudanpi, being acrid and cold, can dissipate Heat in the Blood, thereby harmonizing Ying and treating carbuncles and sores.
Prescriptions:
Mudanpi mixed with Fangfeng powder and taken with wine. Treats leprosy-like hernias.
Mudanpi combined with Maidong, Wuweizi, Baifu Ling, Gancao, Mutong, and Shengdi. Treats Fire in the Pericardium.
[Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma)]
Qi is cold. Flavor is bitter. Non-toxic. It primarily treats eye pain caused by Heat, tearing due to injury, improves vision, treats abdominal pain in the intestines, dysentery, and swelling and pain in the female genitalia.
Long-term use prevents forgetfulness. (Preparation: Stir-fry with Evodiae Fructus, then stir-fry with Ginger Juice.)
Huanglian has a cold qi, inheriting the cold water energy of winter from heaven, entering the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its bitter flavor and non-toxic nature derive from the Fire flavor of the South on earth, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Both its qi and flavor descend, making it Yin. It treats eye pain caused by Heat because the Heart governs Fire; Fire Qi is hot. Heart disease transmits to the Liver, and the Liver opens into the eyes. Huanglian is bitter and cold, thus clearing Fire. The regular pathway of the Hand-Shaoyin meridian emerges from the face and converges at the inner canthus. The Hand-Shaoyin corresponds to Heart Fire; when Fire is excessive, the Heart ties become tense, leading to tearing. Injury to tears is all due to Heart Fire. Huanglian clears the Heart, thus treating this condition. According to the principle "excess is treated by draining its child," the Heart is the child of Liver Wood. Clearing Heart Fire drains Liver pathogenic factors, thus improving vision. The Large Intestine is the fu-organ of Geng Metal. If Heart Fire attacks it, body fluids transform into pus and blood, causing pain and dysentery. Huanglian treats these because its cold nature clears Fire, and its bitter nature drains Heat. The North is black, connecting to the Kidney, opening into the two orifices. The female genitalia is the orifice of the Kidney. Excessive Heat causes swelling; swelling and pain are due to excessive Fire. Huanglian enters the Kidney, using its cold and bitter nature to clear Fire, thus treating this condition. As for long-term use preventing forgetfulness, it is because Huanglian enters the Heart to clear Fire; when Fire is cleared, the Heart becomes bright, enabling memory.
