Lily Bulb (Baihe): The qi is neutral, the taste is sweet, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats abdominal distension and heart pain caused by pathogenic factors, promotes the free flow of urine and stool, tonifies the Middle Jiao, and benefits Qi.
Lily Bulb possesses neutral Qi, inheriting the autumnal neutral Metal Qi from Heaven, and enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sweet and neutral, non-toxic, obtaining the central Earth flavor from Earth, and enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its nature descends and its taste is harmonious, belonging to Yin. The Lung governs Qi; when Qi rebels upward, it causes abdominal distension and heart pain. What is termed "pathogenic factor" refers to Qi being in an improper position. Because Lily Bulb has neutral Qi that descends, it is able to treat these conditions. The Bladder is the official of the reservoir where fluids gather; only when fluid Qi transformation occurs can they be excreted. The Lung governs Qi and is internally-externally related with the Large Intestine; the Spleen transports fluids for the Stomach. Lily Bulb is sweet and neutral; neutrality allows Qi to descend, so Qi transformation reaches the Bladder (the reservoir), making urination smooth. Sweetness moistens the Spleen, and as the Spleen moves the fluids of the Stomach, defecation becomes smooth. The Spleen resides in the Central Jiao; a sweet taste tonifies the Middle Jiao and Spleen. The Lung governs Qi; neutral Qi肃 (clears and descends) the Lung, thereby benefiting Lung Qi.
Prescription Formulation:
When combined with Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), White Peony Root (Baishao), Licorice Root (Gancao), and Akebia Stem (Mutong), it promotes the free flow of urine and stool. When combined with Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), and Bamboo Leaves (Zhuye), it treats cold-heat pathogenic factors and whole-body pain. When combined with Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi), White Peony Root (Baishao), and Licorice Root (Gancao), it tonifies the Middle Jiao and benefits Qi. When combined with White Peony Root (Baishao), Poria (Baifu), Plantago Seed (Cheqian), and Mulberry Root Bark (Sangpi), it treats edema of the skin and hair follicles.
Cuscuta Seed (Tusizi): The qi is neutral, the taste is pungent and sweet, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats the healing of severed injuries, tonifies deficiencies, boosts Qi and strength, and makes the body robust. (Processed with wine steaming).
Cuscuta Seed possesses neutral Qi, inheriting the autumnal neutral Metal Qi from Heaven, and enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is pungent and sweet, non-toxic, possessing both Metal and Earth flavors, and enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its Qi and Flavor ascend more than they descend, belonging to Yang. Its ability to heal severed injuries lies in the fact that the Lung governs fluids and the Spleen controls blood; pungent and sweet flavors can moisten, and moistening allows severed tissues to reconnect. The Lung governs Qi, and the Spleen governs Blood; the Stomach is the root of the twelve meridians. With neutral Qi and pungent-sweet flavors, it benefits both Qi and Blood, thus tonifying deficiencies. Qi and strength are derived from Heaven and filled by grain; pungent and sweet flavors benefit the Spleen and Stomach, leading to increased appetite and充盈 (fullness) of Qi and strength. The Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth; pungent and sweet flavors can moisten, causing muscles to become naturally plump and robust.
Prescription Formulation:
Taken alone, Cuscuta Seed nourishes Blood. Combined with Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) pills, it treats Yin deficiency. Combined with Eucommia Bark (Duzhong) pills, it treats Yang deficiency. Combined with Poria (Baifu) and Lotus Seed (Shilian), it treats leukorrhea or cloudy urine (Baizhuo). Combined with Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) pills, it treats Heart-Kidney insufficiency, dry mouth, and palpitations (Zhongchong). Combined with Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), it treats pain in the lower back and knees.
