[Jing Mi (Rice)]
The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet and bitter. It is non-toxic. It primarily tonifies healthy qi, relieves restlessness, and stops diarrhea.
Jing Mi has a neutral qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumn maturity, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sweet and bitter, non-toxic, deriving from the flavor of earth and fire in the south-central region of the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Its descending nature exceeds its ascending nature; it belongs to Yin. The Lung governs Qi; neutral Qi benefits the Lung, thereby tonifying healthy Qi. The Spleen is the source of Yin Qi. When Spleen Yin is sufficient, the blood vessels, essence, and marrow of the five Zang organs, as well as the skin, flesh, sinews, and bones of the entire body, become strong due to it. Naturally, there will be no instances of mental restlessness or downward discharge. This is why it stops restlessness and diarrhea.
Prescription:
Take 5 he of white rice and 1 sheng of chicken droppings, stir-fry them until scorched, grind into powder, and take at once with 1 sheng of water. It treats "xia" (abdominal masses) formed by eating uncooked rice. When stir-fried until scorched for medicinal use, it opens the stomach and directs Qi downward.
[Xiao Mai (Wheat)]
The qi is slightly cold. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily eliminates external heat, stops restlessness, thirst, and dry throat, promotes urination, nourishes Liver Qi, stops bleeding (such as leakage and hemoptysis), and facilitates conception in women.
Xiao Mai has a slightly cold qi, inheriting the cold water energy of winter, entering the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its taste is sweet, non-toxic, deriving from the central earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its descending nature exceeds its ascending nature; it belongs to Yin. "External heat" refers to pathogenic heat from outside. Xiao Mai is sweet and moistening; moistening generates Yin, thus eliminating external heat. The Shaoyin meridian connects to the throat. If Kidney Water fails to control Fire, restlessness, thirst, and dry throat occur. The cold qi of Xiao Mai strengthens Water to clear Fire, thus stopping restlessness and irritability. The Kidney and Bladder are interior-exterior partners; cold qi benefits the Kidney, causing Bladder heat to recede and urination to become smooth. When Kidney Water is sufficient, it generates Liver Wood; when Wood is nourished, Qi becomes peaceful, thus nourishing Liver Qi. The Spleen controls Blood; when Blood is hot, it moves recklessly, causing lower leakage and upper vomiting. Sweetness tonifies the Spleen, and cold Qi clears heat, thus stopping hemoptysis and leakage. Sweetness and moisture nourish Blood; since women prioritize Blood, sufficient Blood facilitates conception.
Prescription:
Combine Xiao Mai with Tong Cao to treat the five types of strangury and abdominal fullness. Combine with Gan Cao and Da Zao to treat visceral dryness in women characterized by sadness and crying.
[Ma Dou (Horse Bean/Vigna angularis var. nipponensis)]
The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. Applied raw as a paste, it treats carbuncles and swellings; decocted juice kills "ghost poison" and relieves pain. Long-term consumption causes heaviness in the body.
Ma Dou has a neutral qi, inheriting the moistening metal energy of autumn maturity, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sweet, non-toxic, deriving from the central earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its descending nature exceeds its ascending nature; it belongs to Yin. Sweet and neutral properties moisten dryness and clear heat, so applying it raw treats carbuncles and swellings, and decocted juice kills ghost poison and relieves pain. Long-term consumption moistens Spleen Earth, thus causing bodily heaviness. This is because damp Earth leads to heaviness.
Prescription:
Combine Ma Dou with Gan Cao to resolve hundred toxins. Steam with Shou Wu to darken hair and beard. Steam with Dang Gui Shen to treat blood exhaustion. Combine with Chi Dou and Lü Dou, named San Dou Tang (Three Bean Decoction), to treat acne/pox conditions involving blood heat.
