[Rice Malt]
The qi is greatly warm. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It mainly treats deficiency and fatigue, stops thirst, and removes blood stasis.
Rice malt's qi is greatly warm; it inherits the mild Wood qi of spring from Heaven and enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its taste is sweet and non-toxic; it obtains the central Earth taste from Earth and enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Both its qi and taste are ascending, which belongs to Yang. The Liver is the organ of continuous generation, the meridian that generates Qi and Blood. The Spleen is the foundation of post-heaven existence, the mother of all things. Rice malt's warm qi reaches the Liver; when Liver Qi ascends, Yang Qi becomes abundant. Its sweet taste benefits the Spleen; when Spleen Blood is moistened, Yin Qi becomes prosperous. Therefore, it mainly treats deficiency and fatigue. Its sweet taste benefits the Spleen; when Spleen Yin is sufficient, thirst stops. Its warm qi warms the Liver; the Liver stores Blood, and when Blood is warmed, stasis moves. Therefore, it removes blood stasis.
Prescription Formulation:
When Rice Malt is combined with Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), it is named Jianzhong Decoction. It treats insufficiency of Blood in the Liver and Spleen. When combined with Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), it is named Dajianzhong Decoction. It treats abdominal pain so severe that it cannot be touched.
[Dried Ginger]
The qi is warm. The taste is pungent. It is non-toxic. It mainly treats chest fullness, cough, and rebellious Qi rushing upward. It warms the Middle Jiao, stops bleeding, induces sweating, expels wind-dampness bi-syndrome, and treats intestinal dysentery. Raw use is especially effective. (Processed)
Dried ginger's qi is warm; it inherits the ascending Wood qi of spring from Heaven and enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its taste is pungent and non-toxic; it obtains the Metal taste of the West from Earth and enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
After processing, it turns grey-black and enters the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Both its qi and taste are ascending, which belongs to Yang. The chest is the domain of the Lung. When the Lung is cold, Metal loses its descending nature, causing Qi to stagnate in the chest and result in fullness. Fullness leads to rebellious Qi, thus generating symptoms of cough and rebellious Qi. What treats these is its pungent dispersal and warm circulation. The "Middle" refers to the Spleen and Stomach. Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth, and Earth relies on Fire for generation. Processed ginger enters the Kidney to assist Fire. Fire located below is called Shaohuo (Mild Fire); Shaohuo generates Qi, and when Qi is abundant, the Middle Jiao naturally becomes warm. Blood follows Qi in its movement. When Qi rebels and Fire agitates, Blood overflows upwards. Processed ginger enters the Kidney; when the Kidney is warmed, floating and rebellious Fire Qi descends. When Fire calms and Qi descends, bleeding stops naturally.
Inducing sweating occurs because pungent-warm properties can disperse. Expelling wind-dampness bi-syndrome occurs because pungent-warm properties can disperse wind-dampness and unblock blood stasis. Intestinal dysentery is a symptom of the Large Intestine. Generally, if the Large Intestine is cold, dysentery will be foul-smelling. The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior partners. Pungent-warm properties warm the Lung, thus warming the Large Intestine as well, stopping dysentery. Raw ginger has an especially fierce nature, hence its superior efficacy.
Prescription Formulation:
Processed ginger combined with Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) converges Fire Qi to descend downward. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), it warms the Middle Jiao and tonifies Qi. Combined with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), and Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), it treats postpartum fever.
Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), it treats stomach deficiency with vomiting and reflux. Combined with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), and Bai Fu Ling (Poria), it treats phlegm-malaria. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), it treats cold malaria. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), it is named Lizhong Decoction. It treats deficiency-cold diarrhea.
