[Fuyi (Bat)]
Salty, neutral, non-toxic. Indicated for blurred vision, itching and pain of the eyes; treats Lin syndrome (dysuria), promotes urination, brightens the eyes, and enables clear night vision as if seeing a fine light. Long-term consumption brings joy and happiness, enhances charm and beauty, and eliminates worry. Also known as Bat. Grows in valleys of Mount Tai and under eaves of houses. Harvested after Start of Summer, dried in shade. (Xianshi [Amaranthus fruit] and Yunshi [Caesalpinia fruit] can impair the vision and gallbladder function of Fuyi; Daoist practitioners use it for "clairsentience" methods, but only white bats hanging upside down are suitable for medicinal use.)
[Pi (Skin/Hide - Context implies animal skin/fur, likely referring to a specific animal's skin or fur mentioned in lost context, literally "Skin") ]
Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Indicated for five types of hemorrhoids (Wuzhi), genital erosion, discharge of red and white pus/blood of five colors from the anus, unceasing bloody discharge, genital swelling, and pain radiating to the lower back. Boiled in wine to kill/process. Also treats abdominal pain and hernia masses; can be burned to ash and taken with wine. Grows in fields and valleys of Chu region. Harvested at any time, keep dry. (Enhanced by wine; incompatible with Jiegeng [Platycodon Root] and Maimendong [Ophiopogon Tuber].)
This beast is often found in fields. When approached by humans, it hides its head and feet, its hair prickles the skin making it hard to catch, and it can jump into a tiger's ear. Upon seeing a magpie, it exposes its belly to be pecked. Mutual control among creatures is inconceivable. Its fat, when melted and poured into iron, with a small amount of mercury added, becomes soft like lead-tin alloy. (Da Guan Vol. 2)
[Shilongzi (Gecko)]
Salty, cold, slightly toxic. Indicated for five types of retention of urine (Longbi) and qi stagnation due to pathogenic factors, breaks stone Lin syndrome (urolithiasis), hematochezia/hematuria, and promotes urination. Also known as Xiyi (Lizard), Shanlongzi (Mountain Dragon Son), Shougong (Guard Palace), and Shi Yi (Stone Lizard). Grows in valleys of Pingyang and among rocks of Mount Jing. Harvested in May, dried on stones. (Incompatible with Liuhuang [Sulfur], Banmao [Mylabris], and Wuyi [Terminalia chebula]).
There are four kinds: The first is large and pure yellow, called Sheyimu (Snake Doctor Mother) or Shejiumu (Snake Uncle Mother), not used in medicine; the second resembles the Snake Doctor Mother, is small with a long tail, stays motionless when seeing people, called Longzi; the third is small with five colors, has a lovely blue-green tail, called Duanyi (Broken Lizard), none bite humans; the fourth likes to climb fences and walls, called Ting, small and black. It is said that being bitten by it causes death, yet no one has ever reported being bitten. According to Dongfang Shuo: "If it is not Shougong, then it is Xiyi." Thus, this Ting is called Shougong. Fed cinnabar until it weighs three jin, then killed, dried, and powdered to apply to women's bodies; if sexual intercourse occurs, the mark disappears, otherwise it remains like a red tattoo, hence named Shougong. The current term "Shougong" here, similar to Yege (Wild Aconite) and Guijiu (Podocarpus), is difficult to distinguish clearly. (Da Guan Vol. 21, Zhenghe p. 432)
