Ulmus Cortex (Yupi): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It treats obstruction of urination and defecation, promotes the flow of water passages, and eliminates pathogenic factors. It clears pathogenic heat from the intestines and stomach, reduces swelling, and has a slippery and lubricating property. Long-term consumption lightens the body and prevents hunger; its fruits are particularly effective. It treats head sores in children. Tao Hua states: It treats infantile convulsions, difficult urination, and heat injury. Also known as Lingyu. It grows in mountain valleys. The bark is harvested in the second lunar month, the white part is taken and sun-dried. The fruits are harvested in the eighth lunar month, keeping them dry to avoid harm to humans. This is the modern elm tree; the bark is peeled, the outer red layer is scraped off, and it can be used temporarily. Its nature is very slippery. The newly sprouted leaves are made into porridge or soup by people to induce sleep. As Ji Gong said: "Elm induces sleep." During grain avoidance (Bigu), the bark is ground into powder and taken with Taxodium bark, which is referred to as preventing hunger.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui): Sweet and pungent in taste, warm to very warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats cough with rebellious qi, warm malaria with chills and fever feeling like cold water sprinkling on the skin, leukorrhea and infertility in women, various malignant sores and ulcers, metallic wounds, when decocted and drunk. It warms the middle jiao, relieves pain, removes stagnant blood internally, treats wind-stroke, anhidrosis, damp-bi syndrome, sudden evil invasion, deficiency-cold caused by external pathogens, tonifies the five zang organs, and generates flesh. Also known as Gan Gui. It grows in the mountains and valleys of Longxi. The roots are harvested in the second and eighth lunar months and dried in the shade. (Incompatible with Rucao; adverse reaction with Changpu, Sargassum, and Mumeng.)
The Danggui from Taoyang and Heishui in Longxi today has thick flesh and few branches, with a fragrant aroma, named Ma Wei Danggui, which is slightly hard to obtain. The Danggui from northern Sichuan has many roots and branches but is thin. The one from Liyang is white in color with weak flavor and odor, unlike the authentic one, called Cao Danggui, used only when scarce. Practitioners refer to this as true Danggui, due to variations in quality. It is widely used in the world and frequently needed in Daoist prescriptions.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng): Sweet and pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats severe wind, dizziness and headache, aversion to wind, wind pathogens, blindness, wind circulating throughout the body, joint pain and bi-syndrome, irritability and fullness. Hypochondriac pain and wind, wandering pain in the head and face, spasms and tightness in the four limbs, postpartum and traumatic internal spasms. Long-term consumption lightens the body. Leaves: Treat wind-heat with sweating. Also known as Tongyun, Huicao, Baizhi, Pingfeng, Gen, and Baifei. It grows in Shayan marshes and rivers, as well as Handan, Langya, and Shangcai. The roots are harvested in the second and tenth lunar months and sun-dried. (Combined with Alisma and Ligusticum to treat wind; combined with Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Yangqishi, and Yuyuliang to treat uterine wind in women; detoxifies Aconitum; incompatible with Dry Ginger, Veratrum, Ampelopsis, and Genkwa.)
There is no place named Shayan in counties. Currently, the primary production areas are Pengcheng and Lanling, near Langya. It can also be obtained through trade in Yuzhou. Secondary production areas are Xiangyang and Yiyang county borders, near Shangcai, which are also usable. The best quality is solid, moist, with nodes at the head hard like an earthworm's head. It is most important for treating wind in the world and is frequently used in Daoist prescriptions.
