Taste is sweet, nature is warm or slightly cold, non-toxic. It treats evil qi accumulation in the heart and abdomen, brightens the eyes, and treats eye pain, redness, injury, and tearing. It treats eyelid swelling and ulceration, nasal obstruction (text implies nasal disease), and breaks up stagnant qi in the epigastrium. Long-term consumption makes the body light, benefits qi, and prevents muscle wasting. It grows in the valleys of Hangu Pass and Baxi. The fruits are harvested in July. Currently, they mostly come from the north, said to originate from the Pengcheng area. They are about the size of a black soybean, round and flat, with grain patterns, resembling walnut kernels or peach pits. Nowadays, people use them with the shells intact.
The odor is slightly warm. All treat wind-water toxic swelling and remove foul qi. Xunlu Xiang (Frankincense) and Zhantang Xiang (Gum Arabic) treat Fu Shi (lingering death/chronic wasting disease). Jishe Xiang (Clove) and Huoxiang (Patchouli) treat Huoluan (cholera-like disorder) and heart pain. Fengxiang (Liquidambar) treats wind urticaria and itchy toxins. These six types of aromatic substances are essential ingredients for perfume makers but are not necessarily directly used in medicinal prescriptions; they are mainly used to treat E He (hard nodules) and toxic swellings, and are quite useful in Daoist formulas. Zhantang Xiang originates from Jin'an Lingzhou. The top-grade pure and moist ones are hard to obtain; often, its bark and Tuo insect feces are mixed in. Only the light-weight ones are considered superior. There is little difference between genuine and fake among the rest, only fine and coarse distinctions. Foreigners use Bojin Xiang (Benzoin?) to brighten the eyes. Baitan (Sandalwood) eliminates wind swelling. Qingmuxiang (Aucklandia Root) is listed separately in the Upper Grade. (Xinxiu Bencao Vol. 108, Daguan Bencao Vol. 12, Zhenghe Bencao p. 307)
Taste is pungent, nature is warm, non-toxic. It treats wind-cold in the five Zang organs and the body, wind-induced headache, and facial edema. It warms the Middle Jiao, resolves the muscle layer, and benefits the nine orifices. It relieves nasal congestion and runny nose. It treats facial swelling radiating to toothache, dizziness, vertigo, and a sensation of swaying as if on a boat or carriage. It promotes hair growth and removes white parasites (ascarids/enterobiasis). Long-term consumption directs Qi downward, lightens the body, brightens the eyes, increases lifespan, and delays aging. It can be made into plasters. When used, the center and external hairs must be removed; if hairs penetrate the lungs, they cause coughing. Also known as Xin Shen, Hou Tao, or Fang Mu. It grows in the valleys of Hanzhong. The fruits are harvested in September and sun-dried. (It acts as an assistant drug with Xiongqiong [Ligusticum Chuanxiong]; it is incompatible with Wushi Zhi [Five Minerals Clay], and fears Changpu [Acorus], Puhuang [Lygodii Spora], Huanglian [Coptidis Rhizoma], Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum], and Huanghuan.)
Currently, it comes from areas near Dan Yang. Its shape resembles a peach. When young, it has a pungent fragrance; this is the Xin Yi mentioned in Li Sao. (Xinxiu Bencao Vol. 111, Daguan Bencao Vol. 12, Zhenghe Bencao p. 303)
