[Huanghuan]
Acrid, bitter, cold, slightly cold, non-toxic. Mainly treats alternating chills and fever (Hanre), wind-stroke (Zhongfeng), convulsions (Chouyuan), spasms (Jing), fright and epilepsy (Jingxian), pathogenic factors (Xieqi), eliminates hard masses (Zhengjian), blood stasis retained in the stomach and intestines, calms the five zang organs, treats carbuncles and sores (Yongchuang). Eliminates headache and external heat caused by seasonal epidemics (Shiqi), five types of fatigue injuries (Wulao), qi deficiency due to overwork (Laoqi), headache and waist pain, wind-induced trismus (Fengjin), and manic depression (Dianji). Also known as Lujun, also known as Shugu. Grows in the valleys of Ba Commandery and Hanzhong. Roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the shade. (Incompatible with Cuscutae Semen [Tusizi], Fritillariae Bulbus [Beimu], and Euphorbiae Radix [Daji]; currently available in the East, those with reddish color are preferred; the heart should be removed before use. Note: Shi Fu is also called Shugu, and since the name here is the same, it is likely not the same species, suggesting a textual error.)
[Another Huanghuan]
Acrid, bitter, neutral, warm, non-toxic. Mainly treats wind-cold (Fenghan), warm malaria (Wenmie), excess heat (Reshi), various types of epilepsy (Zhu xian), expels pathogenic factors, promotes urination and defecation. Treats edema (Shuizhong), wind-swelling (Fengzhong), clears bladder heat, cold damage (Shanghan), chills and fever pathogenic factors, wind-stroke causing limb spasticity (Shoujiao luanji), stops diarrhea, dissipates carbuncles and swelling, malignant accumulations, various scabies and tinea (Wo jie xuan), insect bites/sores, opens interstices (Coulǐ), benefits the nine orifices. Also known as Jielí; texture resembling the spokes of a cart wheel indicates good quality. Grows in the rivers and valleys of Hanzhong. Roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the shade. (Yinie acts as an assistant herb, detoxifies Realgar [Xionghuang], incompatible with Asari Radix [Xixin], incompatible with Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma [Bixie].)
Currently produced in Yidu and Jianping; large size, bluish-white color, and spongy texture are good; dark black and hard texture is poor. It is also used for health preservation and is an essential herb for treating wind-water diseases (Fengshui).
[Third Huanghuan]
Bitter, cold, toxic. Mainly treats crusty ulcers and foul necrotic sores (Jiyang ebai chuang), eliminates three parasites and pathogenic factors. Grows in the rivers and valleys of Yizhou. Harvested in February and August.
[Fourth Huanghuan]
Bitter, neutral, toxic. Mainly treats gu poison (Gudu), gui zhu (a severe infectious disease), demonic influences (Guimei), pathogenic factors within the zang organs, eliminates cough with reverse flow of qi and alternating chills and fever. Also known as Lingquan, also known as Dajiu. Grows in the valleys of Shu Commandery. Roots are harvested in March and dried in the shade. (Iris Tectorum [Yuawei] acts as an assistant herb, incompatible with Poria [Fuling] and Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix [Fangji].)
Resembles Fangji. Also exhibits a texture like cart wheel spokes. The "Qingzhu Huanghuan" mentioned in the *Shu Du Fu* is sometimes said to be the flower of Euphorbia, but this is definitely incorrect. Its use in the world is very...
