[Male Dog Penis]
Salty in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It treats internal injury, impotence (failure of erection), induces strong heat in the penis, greatly enhances fertility, and eliminates twelve types of leukorrhea (abnormal vaginal discharge) in women. Also known as "Dog Essence". Collected during the upper Fu days in the sixth lunar month, dried in the shade for one hundred days.
Gallbladder: Treats brightening of the eyes, scabbed ulcers, and malignant sores.
Heart: Treats qi stagnation caused by sorrow and indignation, expels evil qi.
Brain: Treats headache bi syndrome (painful obstruction due to wind-cold-dampness), lower body sores, and nasal polyps.
Teeth: Treats epilepsy, alternating chills and fever, sudden onset of wind apoplexy (paralysis), collected during the dog days.
Skull: Treats metal wounds, stops bleeding.
Four hooves: Decocted and drunk to promote lactation.
White Dog Blood: Salty in flavor, non-toxic. Treats seizures of mania-epilepsy.
Meat: Salty and sour in flavor, warm in nature. Treats calming the five zang organs, repairing severe injuries, lightening the body, and tonifying qi.
Bone from feces: Treats alternating chills and fever, pediatric convulsive disorders.
White dogs and black dogs are used medicinally. White dog bones burned to ash treat various sores and breast abscesses with swelling. Yellow dog meat greatly tonifies deficiency; females are inferior to males, and males represent the father. It is also called "Quan" (dog), referring to those having an extra dewclaw on the feet. Consuming white dog blood together with white chicken meat, white goose liver, white mutton, black chicken meat, and cattail soup causes illness and should not be eaten. When dogs have red eyes, dry noses, and manic tendencies in spring, their meat should not be consumed. (From *Xinxiu Bencao* page 208, *Daguan Bencao*)
[Deer Antler Velvet]
Sweet and sour in flavor, warm and slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats abnormal uterine bleeding with dark blood, alternating chills and fever, convulsive disorders, tonifies qi, stabilizes willpower, promotes tooth growth, and delays aging. It treats consumptive disease with chills resembling malaria, emaciation, soreness and pain in the four limbs, back and spine pain, frequent urination, seminal emission, hematuria, breaks up retained blood in the abdomen, disperses stone strangury (lithiasis), carbuncles and swellings, bone heat and abscesses, nourishes bones, calms the fetus, directs qi downward, kills ghost essence (evil spirits), and if brought near the genitals, causes impotence. Long-term consumption promotes longevity. Collected when antlers shed in April and May, dried in the shade, kept dry during use. (Mahuang flower is its assistant herb.)
Antler: Salty in flavor, non-toxic. Treats malignant sores, carbuncles and swellings, drives away evil qi, removes retained blood in the yin region. Relieves urgent pain in the lower abdomen, back and spine pain, traumatic hematoma, and tonifies qi. Collected in July. (Eucommia bark is its assistant herb.)
Marrow: Sweet in flavor, warm in nature. Treats internal injury and pulse cessation in men and women, tendon stiffness and pain, cough and counterflow qi. Mixed with wine and taken orally, it is effective.
Kidney: Neutral in nature, treats tonifying kidney qi.
Meat: Warm in nature, treats tonifying the middle jiao, strengthening the five zang organs, boosting qi and strength. Fresh meat treats facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye), applied thinly sliced externally.
Among wild meats, only cheetah (zhang) and deer are edible; raw they lack gaminess, and unlike animals associated with earthly branches, they belong to no specific trigram yet can warm and tonify humans, thus incurring no karmic blame, allowing Daoists to permit them as dried meat. Other meats, though beef, mutton, chicken, and dog can supplement muscles and flesh, cause transgressions for departed souls and are not worth eating. Any dried meat that does not move when roasted, moves when touching water, or remains moist after sun-drying will kill people. Dried meat dripping from leaking thatched roofs is called "Leaking Meat"; dried meat stored in sealed vessels is called "Stagnant Meat"; both are inedible.
