This vermilion annotation notes that the horn and marrow are listed here; the gallbladder was originally appended under the entry for Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*. It is grouped here by similarity but is not a superior-grade herb; it is now extracted separately.
[Heart of Bovine] Indicated for amnesia (forgetfulness).
[Liver of Bovine] Indicated for improving vision.
[Kidney of Bovine] Indicated for tonifying kidney qi and benefiting essence.

[Meat of Bovine] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Indicated for xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome), stopping vomiting and diarrhea, stabilizing the middle and boosting qi, nourishing the spleen and stomach. Meat from animals that died naturally is inadvisable.
[Feces of Bovine] Cold in nature. Indicated for edema and malignant qi; applied externally to doors and walls. Calcined, it indicates for scrofula (lymphatic tuberculosis) and malignant sores.
[Urine of Yellow Castrated Bull and Black Ox] Indicated for edema, abdominal distension, and leg swelling; promotes urination.
Among these cattle, yellow cattle are best, green (black) cattle are finest, while water buffalo are merely suitable for sustenance. "Died naturally" refers to death from plague; such meat contains much toxin. The intestines of green cattle should not be consumed with dog meat or dog blood, as this causes disease. (From *Xinxiu Bencao* p. 202, *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 17, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 377)
[Penis of White Horse] Salty and sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. [Soil beneath the hoof of a white horse walking eastward] Used in magical arts to discern extramarital affairs of women. There are many colors of horses; pure white is considered best. If the mouth, eyes, and hooves are all white, such horses are rare in the world; minor uses do not require such strict criteria. Liver of horse and meat from under the saddle are said in old texts to be fatal. Eating meat of swift horses without drinking alcohol can also be fatal. White horses with black hooves should not be eaten. The *Book of Rites* states: Meat from a horse with a black spine and spotted arms, if left overnight, becomes "leaking cured meat" and is no longer edible. Bones of horses injure people and are toxic. If humans have sores, horse sweat, horse breath, and horse hair can also cause harm.
