[Shilongrui]
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It treats wind-cold-damp bi (a syndrome characterized by pain, numbness, and restricted movement of limbs due to invasion of wind, cold, and damp pathogens), evil qi in the heart and abdomen, unblocks the joints, and relieves irritability and fullness. It regulates the qi of the Kidney and Stomach, supplements insufficient Yin Qi, treats spermatorrhea, and coldness of the penis. Long-term use makes the body light, improves vision, prevents aging, gives luster to the skin, and promotes fertility. Also known as Luguoneng, Dizhen, Shixiong, Penggen, Tiandou. Grows beside stones in streams and marshes of Mount Tai. Seeds are harvested on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month; bark is harvested in the second and eighth lunar months and dried in the shade. (Daji serves as an assistant herb; it is incompatible with Shed Snake Skin and Evodia Fruit.)
Currently found near roadsides; the seeds are coarse and flat, resembling Cnidii Fructus but flatter, not of high quality. People say they are merely seeds of Shepherd's Purse. Those growing on stones in the Eastern Mountains have leaves...
[Shilongchu]
Bitter in taste, slightly cold and slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats evil qi in the heart and abdomen, difficult urination, strangury and retention, wind-dampness, Guizhu (a contagious disease or mental disorder), and deficiency within. It treats epigastric fullness, lack of moisture in the body, sweating, clears heat and pain in the urethra, and kills toxic vapors of Guizhu. Long-term use tonifies weakness and emaciation, makes the body light, sharpens hearing and vision, and prolongs life. Also known as Longxu, Caoxuduan, Zhulong, Longhua, Xuanwan, Caodu. The stems are green, thin, and connected; the fruits are red. Currently found near water and stones; similar to the dragon's beard grass from Dongyang used for making mats, but with more nodes. (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 7, Zhenghe Bencao p. 190)
[Luo Shi]
Bitter in taste, warm and slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. It treats wind-heat, necrotic muscle, sores and injuries, dry mouth, scorched tongue, persistent abscesses, swelling of the throat and tongue causing obstruction, and inability to swallow liquids or solids. It addresses fright entering the abdomen, dispels evil qi, nourishes the Kidney, treats pain in the lower back and hips, strengthens bones and tendons, and unblocks the joints. Long-term use makes the body light, improves vision, moistens the skin, enhances complexion, prevents aging, and promotes spiritual clarity. Also known as Shiling, Shicuo, Lueshi, Mingshi, Lingshi, Xuanshi. Grows in valleys of Mount Tai, on the shady side of stone mountains, on high mountain rocks, or in human habitations. Harvested in the first lunar month. (Duzhong and Peony Root serve as assistant herbs; it is antagonistic to Iron Filings, and incompatible with Fritillaria Bulb and Acorus Rhizome.)
(Those who do not recognize this herb find no use for it in methods of immortality. Some say it is a stone type. Since it is said to grow in human habitations, it is not a stone, just like Dendrobium, which takes its name from "stone".) (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 7, Zhenghe Bencao p. 176)
