名
[Anatum Fat]
Sweet in taste, non-toxic. It treats wind deficiency syndromes and alternating chills and fever.
White duck feces: Also known as Yatong (Duck Pass). It primarily neutralizes the toxicity of mineral drugs, resolves stagnation and binding, and dissipates accumulated heat.
Duck meat: Tonifies deficiency, clears internal heat, harmonizes the Zang-Fu organs, and promotes the free flow of water passages.
The term "duck" here refers to both domestic and wild ducks. The earlier *Shennong Bencao Jing* recorded goose fat (fat from geese), which has slightly different therapeutic effects; the description here specifically refers to the fat of domestic ducks.
[Ostreae Concha]
Salty in taste, neutral and slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. It treats cold damage diseases, alternating chills and fever, shivering during the onset of warm malaria, fright and anger qi, relieves limb stiffness and flaccidity, scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck), and red and white leukorrhea in women. It eliminates lingering heat in the joints, clears deficiency heat of Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive levels) characterized by irregular temperature fluctuations, relieves irritability and fullness, stops sweating, treats heart pain with qi stagnation, generates fluids to stop thirst, removes old blood stasis, astringes the large and small intestines, stops diarrhea and urinary incontinence, treats seminal emission, bi-syndrome of the throat (sore throat with obstruction), cough, and epigastric/hypochondriac stuffiness with heat. Long-term consumption strengthens bone and joints, expels evil spirits, and prolongs life. Also known as Lige, or Mu Ge. It grows in the pools and marshes of the East Sea. It can be collected at any time. (Fritillariae Bulbus is its guiding herb; it works well when combined with Glycyrrhizae Radix, Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Polygalae Radix, and Cnidii Fructus; it is incompatible with Ephedrae Herba, Evodiae Fructus, and Magnoliae Flos.)
It is said that Ostreae Concha is transformed from an eagle that has lived for a hundred years. It is best collected in the eleventh lunar month. The flesh should be removed, and it takes two hundred days to process into powder. Currently, it is produced in the East Sea, with those from Yongjia and Jin'an being of good quality. In Daoist formulas, the one facing left is considered male, hence named "Mu Li" (Male Oyster); the one facing right is female. They attach themselves to rocks, usually with the mouth facing upward. When held up with the abdomen facing south, if the mouth slants toward the east, it is authentic. Some say the pointed end indicates the left-facing side, but it is unclear which view is correct. Generally, larger shells are preferred. They are also produced in Guangzhou and the South Sea region, but mostly the right-facing ones are not used. In alchemical formulas using clay crucibles, the shell edges are removed, and only the inner powdery substance is taken. This method is also used by common people; coastal residents use it to line salt-boiling pots, which withstand fire and water without cracking or leaking.
[Qu Ge]
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It treats flaccidity and bi-syndromes, diarrhea and dysentery, and pus and blood in the stool. Also known as Kuilu, or Huodong. It grows in the East Sea. It is perfectly round with hollow ends and has patterns on its surface. It can be collected at any time.
Its shape resembles a spindle, small and narrow, with longitudinal and transverse textures on the outside. It is said to be transformed from an old bat, and its medicinal use is minimal. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* mentions Hai Ge (Sea Clam), also known as...
