[Bei Zi (Concha Arcae)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Toxic.
Indications: Treats leukoma (corneal opacity), Guizhu (a contagious chronic wasting disease attributed to ghosts or pathogens), Gudus (poison caused by gu sorcery), abdominal pain with bloody stools, the five types of Lin syndrome (dysuria), and promotes diuresis. Eliminates alternating chills and fever, Wenzhu (warm-type Zhuan disease), releases the muscle layer, and dissipates clustered heat. Burning it for use is effective.
Also known as Beichi (Shell Teeth). Grows in ponds and marshes of the East Sea.
This refers to the small shells currently used by people to decorate military uniforms and other items, which originate from the South Sea. When burned into a fine powder and blown into the eyes, it effectively treats leukoma; also...
[Zhen Zhu (Pearl)]
Nature: Great Cold.
Indications: Treats redness and pain in the eyes due to heat, quenches thirst.
Grows in rice paddies and along the banks of lakes and ditches. Those that are round and large like pears or oranges are also boiled and eaten by people. The decoction can also treat heat conditions, sober up intoxication, and quench thirst.
For eye pain, take Zhenzhu and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), place them together, wait until juice exudes after some time, then apply this juice to the eyes; most cases will recover. (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 22, Zhenghe Bencao p. 439)
[Woniu (Snail)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Cold.
Indications: Treats half-body paralysis caused by Zeifeng (pathogenic wind), traumatic injuries, rectal prolapse of the large intestine, tendon spasm, and Jingxian (pediatric convulsions and epilepsy).
The character "Wo" is pronounced via fanqie as Li-Ge, but the world calls it Guan Niu. It lives in mountains and near human dwellings; its head resembles that of a slug, but it carries a shell on its back. This was explained in previous notes. There is another variety by the sea that looks exactly alike; when its shell is roasted over fire, it crawls out. Eating it improves complexion, and it is named Jiju (Hermit Crab). Since medical practitioners no longer use it, no one collects it, and it is unclear which one is the authentic species. (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 21, Zhenghe Bencao p. 432)
