Taste is sweet, nature is neutral and cold. Non-toxic. Select milk from women who are physically robust or have recently given birth, specifically the portion that coagulates into clumps during steaming rice, as its efficacy is superior. If taken by ordinary sucking from the mouth, it tends to seek short-term benefits. Collecting a large amount and sun-drying it makes it suitable for long-term use. To facilitate its circulation through the meridians, it must be mixed with pure wine and swallowed. Mixed with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), it jointly supplements essence and blood; added to Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), it together benefits primordial yang. For those with emaciated muscles, sallow skin, and dry, brittle hair, it should be sought quickly; for those with tendon spasms, skeletal flaccidity, and constipation with intestinal dryness, it should be sought. It strengthens the four limbs, nourishes the five zang organs, brightens the eyes, and beautifies the complexion. It calms and nourishes the shen (spirit) and hun (ethereal soul), and unblocks guan-ge (obstructions).
(Chen Jiamo) Commentary: Women's blood descends to become menstruation and ascends to transform into breast milk. When breast milk secretion ceases, menstruation becomes smooth; when breast milk flows, menstruation stops. This principle of different names but same category is well known. The classics state: "The eyes see when they receive blood, the ears hear when they receive blood, the hands grasp when they receive blood, the palms hold when they receive blood, the feet walk when they receive blood, the zang organs produce fluids when they receive blood, and the fu organs generate qi when they receive blood." Thus, all nourishment in the human body relies on the flow of blood. Excessive movement inevitably leads to depletion. Blood-nourishing medicines commonly used in the world include Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis). However, one does not realize that herbal plants obtain the biased qi of heaven and earth. While their power is sufficient for treating blood diseases, it is still inadequate for replenishing blood deficiency. How can this compare to frequently consuming human breast milk, where like attracts like, just as adding oil to a lamp immediately produces light. Not only is blood replenished without deficit, but conditions caused by blood disorders also heal themselves through this nourishing regulation. Nevertheless, blood belongs to yin and has an extremely cold nature. Therefore, those with cold internal organs should exercise caution.
Taste is bitter, nature is warm and slightly cold. Non-toxic. Use hair from the root, preferably aged. Burn it to ash while preserving its medicinal properties, and take it mixed with decoction. Also known as Xueyu (Blood Remainder), it supplements yin very swiftly. It stops hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), blood stagnation, blood syncope, bloody dysentery, and strangury with blood; these symptoms cease upon ingestion. It facilitates recovery from angular cheilitis, smallpox, wind-cold, wind pathogens, febrile convulsions, and epileptic seizures. It unblocks guan-ge obstructions and pent-up stranguria (five types of urinary difficulty), promoting urination. Newborn lanugo is the tender shoot of blood. In old age, obtaining it greatly helps replenish depletion. Fallen hair from ordinary people, if black and lustrous, is of good quality. The burning preparation method is the same as above; it is also used for blood disorders. It stops bloody and white dysentery and promotes bowel and bladder movements. If hair is accidentally swallowed and wraps around the throat, take ash from one's own hair mixed with water; if tetanus toxin enters the brain, add powder of Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root) and administer with wine to restore consciousness. It can also be boiled with other herbs into a plaster to apply on carbuncles and sores to reduce swelling. Scalp dandruff scraped off with a comb is named Baichishuang (Hundred-Tooth Frost). Made into pills, it treats stranguria and retention due to relapse after typhoid fever; made into a paste, it treats acid regurgitation and various demonic influences. For bamboo or wood splinters embedded in flesh, applying saliva mixed with it causes them to emerge. (Applying fly silk to the eyes brings immediate relief.) For acute alcohol poisoning or mushroom poisoning, dissolving it in wine and drinking it gradually alleviates symptoms. (For early-stage mastitis, taking it with wine is also effective.) Ash from burned beard hair applied to sores heals them. If male pubic hair is held in the mouth and its juice swallowed, snake and scorpion toxins will not enter the abdomen to harm the person.
