Properties and Flavor: Cool in nature. Non-toxic. Use urine from prepubescent boys; clear urine is of superior quality. Trim the head and tail, as it reduces fire most rapidly. It can be mixed with other medicines for oral administration or taken alone directly. It can dispel laborious heat and cough, and stop epistaxis and hematemesis. For treating pain caused by bruised blood due to falls and injuries, mixing with wine allows for immediate elimination; for treating postpartum敗血 (decayed blood) attacking the heart, warm drinking can suppress the condition. For difficult labor where the placenta does not expel, decoct with ginger and scallion; for bites from venomous snakes or mad dogs, hot urine should be poured over the injured area. The so-called "Reincarnation Wine" refers to one's own urine. If it can eliminate various accumulations and perform the "Inversion Warehouse" therapy, it relies entirely on its ability to cleanse the intestines and stomach. Sudden onset red eyes can also be washed clear with it. The white sediment accumulated at the bottom of the urinal, when used as medicine, is called Renzhongbai (Human Urine Sediment). Take the clarified white substance from the bottom, burn it into ash on tiles. (It must be placed under wind and dew for two to three years before it can be used.) It has remarkable efficacy in removing transmissive consumption heat and immediate effect in stopping hemoptysis from lung abscess.
Refining Qiushi Dan (Autumn Stone Pill) must be done in autumn. Collect urine from prepubescent boys and store it in jars. Autumn dew must be collected using cloth. (At the time when morning dew is abundant, spread two or three pieces of cloth on the tips of grain stalks overnight; they will become wet immediately and be stirred into a basin for collection.) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) must be water-triturated into fine powder, and Sang Zhi (Morus Twig) must be shaved into straight strips. When these four materials are ready, refine them according to the method. (For each jar of urine, add seven qian of Shi Gao powder, stir and mix twice with a Sang Zhi stick. After about half an hour, the essence gradually sinks to the bottom, while the clear liquid floats on top. Wait for clarification, then pour off the upper liquid. Then add fresh urine as before,投 (throw in) powder, mix and stir, pour off the top and keep the bottom, without any deviation. After the new urine is fully added and the clear liquid poured out, add one bucket of autumn dew water into it, also stirring with a Sang Zhi stick. Pour off when the water settles, repeating this several times to wash away dregs and filth, completely removing the salty odor. After preparation, cover with thick paper, let lime seep out moisture and sun-dry until it becomes solid and condensed, then take it out whole. The light and clear essence naturally floats and結 (condenses) on the surface, being white in quality. The original Shi Gao powder and remaining heavy and turbid dregs sink and gather at the bottom, being dark and dull in quality. Keep the surface part for use, scrape away the bottom part. The system is completed on schedule, and spiritual potency is complete. Used in medicine to save lives, it truly nourishes the Dantian. If further sealed in a jar and refined with gentle fire for half a moment, although the color becomes very white, the nature changes to warm, which is ultimately inferior to sun-drying.) This is called Qiushi, matching name and reality. However, Yin and Yang refining differ slightly because males and females belong to different categories. Yin refining considers men as belonging to Yang; solitary Yang cannot generate life, so one must obtain the true Yin of prepubescent girls (for male diseases, refine female urine), which is the method of gathering Yin to supplement Yang. Yang refining considers women as belonging to Yin; solitary Yin cannot form life, so one must seek the pure Yang of prepubescent boys (for female diseases, seek male urine), which is also a formula of Yang pairing with Yin. Gather what the other has in excess to supplement what I lack. Neither side dominates, thus achieving generation. The *Neijing* states: One Yin and one Yang is called the Dao; deviation to Yin or deviation to Yang is called disease. Indeed, this borrows from this principle. It can be made into powder for ingestion or pills for swallowing. (Ancient formulas used jujube flesh pounded into pills, taken down with warm wine.) It nourishes Kidney Water, returns to the root and restores origin, nourishes the Dantian, returns to the root and restores life. It harmonizes the Five Zang organs, moistens the Sanjiao. It eliminates coughing with thick phlegm, retreats bone-stealing pathogenic heat. It can be used to soften hardness and dissipate masses, and can substitute salt for treating abdominal distension. It brightens the eyes and clears the mind, prolongs life and benefits longevity.
(Chen Jiamo) Commentary: Refining Qiushi Dan must involve collecting urine from prepubescent boys, taking advantage of their lack of external sexual desire and internal preservation of true Yuan Qi. Adding Shi Gao facilitates easy clarification, causing the essence to condense. Stirring autumn dew utilizes its concurrent austere and killing nature, preventing evil filth from residing. The ancient establishment of names is truly based on this meaning. However, refining is divided into Yin and Yang, and gathering/supplementing makes both genders applicable. This again cleverly conforms to the *Neijing* and mystically connects with the *Zhouyi*. The added character "Dan" indicates it is an immortal achievement. Therefore, in the Human category of materia medica, Breast Milk, Heche (Placenta), and these three are often referred to as the supreme treasures for connecting life. Alas, worldly physicians have not received true transmission and act recklessly across all seasons. Although seeking urine from men, they do not distinguish between old and young. Ignorant of Yin-Yang gathering and supplementing, they neglect autumn dew and Shi Gao entirely. They only add Zao Jia (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), stir and clarify in water. Or dry it in the sun, calling it Yin refining; or roast it with fire, calling it Yang refining. Roughly successful but losing all mystery, how does it conform to the Dao, how does it match the name? It can only profit and deceive people, how can it respond to disease and achieve efficacy? As the saying goes: If the name is not correct, language is not in accordance with truth; if language is not in accordance with truth, affairs cannot be carried out. This is inevitable in reason and trend, recognized without needing speculation.
