Xianmao from Rongzhou
Xianmao from Ningjiang Prefecture
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Toxic. Abundant in the Western Regions, also grown in Sichuan and Zhejiang. The leaves are green like those of cogon grass, hence the name "Xianmao" (Immortal Grass). Its root is a single straight stem with fine lateral roots attached; the internal flesh is yellowish-white and mucilaginous, while the outer skin is rough and dark brown. Harvest the roots in February and August, then sun-dry them. In Sanskrit, it is called Alunganduo; people in the south call it Poluomenmi (Brahman Honey). Avoid contact with iron utensils when chewing; process by soaking in rice wash water. Removing the red juice eliminates toxicity without risk. Avoid consuming beef and milk. It primarily treats cold qi in the heart and abdomen causing anorexia, and cures spasms and numbness in the waist and limbs preventing movement. It addresses deficiency and exhaustion in men, urinary incontinence and infertility in the elderly. It nourishes the skin and muscles, clarifies the ears and eyes, assists yang function, and enhances spirit. Long-term use promotes spiritual clarity and strong memory. Legend has it: "Ten jin of Rushi (Milkstone) cannot equal one jin of Xianmao," highlighting its efficacy. If accidental poisoning causes tongue swelling, drink several cups of Dahuang Puxiao Decoction (Rhubarb and Mirabilite Decoction) immediately, and apply the powder to the tongue for rapid recovery.
Banana Flower
GanJiao Gen (Sweet Banana Root)
Sweet in flavor, extremely cold in nature. Non-toxic. There are various species with different origins. Those from Sichuan and Shu produce flowers with large calyces suitable for viewing; (the flower stalk emerges from curled leaves, initially forming a large calyx resembling an inverted lotus bud.) Those from Fujian and Guangdong bear fruit that is extremely delicious. Other places may grow it, but neither flowers nor fruits appear. In recent years, it has been widely planted in the capital, and although the stems and leaves resemble those of Musa basjoo (Japanese Banana), they are not the same species. This text refers to the seeded variety, which must be harvested after the Start of Autumn. Extract the juice and ingest it; it primarily treats epidemic high fever with oppression and irritability, dryness and thirst caused by accidental ingestion of mineral drugs, and postpartum distension and oppression, yielding miraculous results. Mash and apply externally; it removes erysipelas in children, carbuncles and sores on the back in adults, and wind-rash head sores, with immediate divine efficacy. Banana oil exists within the bark; insert a bamboo tube to extract it. (Similar to the method of tapping lacquer.) It relieves excessive thirst from drinking, and applying it turns hair and beard black. For stroke-induced epilepsy or fainting with impending collapse, drink the juice to induce vomiting, leading to rapid recovery. The fruit is green when raw and yellow when ripe; it can be sun-dried and sent to northern regions. Extract the kernels to moisten the lungs and heart, generate fluids, unblock blood vessels, and fill the marrow. Although GanJiao Gen has similar properties, it is not recorded in medical formulas for rescue purposes. However, extracting its oil can also darken hair.
