**Selaginella (Juanbai)**
Selaginella, also known as Leopard's Foot (Baozu), Seeking Thigh (Qiugu), Ten Thousand Years (Wansui), and the Herb of Immortality (Changsheng Busi Cao). It grows in the valleys of Changshan, and is also found in Guan-Shan, Yizhou, and Yanzhou. It grows on rocks. At the Spring Equinox, its perennial roots sprout again, growing three to five cun high. The leaves are fine like those of *Platycladus orientalis* (Cypress), curled and hidden like a chicken's foot. The roots are purple-red and fibrous. Harvested in the sixth and seventh lunar months, dried in the shade.
The flavor is pungent, and the nature is neutral. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats pathogenic qi in the five zang organs, cold-heat pain in the female genitalia, masses (Zhengjia - abdominal lumps), blood obstruction, and infertility. This is caused by yin failing to receive the pairing of yang.
[Discussion] Selaginella is also called "Jiao Shi" (Interacting with Time), indicating that it begins to sprout at the Spring Equinox. At this time, yin separates from yang but can interact and combine with yang. Therefore, it treats conditions where pathogenic qi affects the most yin locations of the five zang organs, leading to masses and blood obstruction.
**General Discussion on the Five Grains**
The classics state that the five grains are for nourishment. Hemp, wheat, rice, millet, and beans correspond to the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney respectively. Thus, the five grains are indeed essential for sustaining life, though not primarily for treating disease. However, one may eat according to the needs of the five zang organs. It is said: Liver disease benefits from hemp; Heart disease benefits from wheat; Spleen disease benefits from polished rice; Lung disease benefits from yellow millet; Kidney disease benefits from soybeans. This view is well-founded.
Polished rice has a sweet flavor. The Heart dislikes laxity; urgently consume sour flavors to astringe. Soybeans are yellow in color and salty in flavor. The Lung dislikes rebellious qi; urgently consume pungent flavors to moisten. Yellow millet is black in color and pungent in flavor. Flavors and aromas that harmonize with the five zang organs serve as nourishment. However, since each zang organ governs a specific function, one must use counter-balancing foods to correct imbalances. Those who practice health preservation should understand this principle.
**Hemp Seed (Huma)**
Hemp seed, also known as Jusheng, is the current oil hemp, also called Zhima (sesame, commonly written as Zhima). In ancient China, there was only large hemp (*Cannabis sativa*). ... Han dynasty ... [Text fragment].
The flavor is sweet, and the nature is neutral. It enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen meridian, and additionally the Foot Jueyin Liver and Foot Shaoyin Kidney meridians. Its nature is compatible with Poria (Fuling). (Tao Hongjing) It moistens and nourishes the five zang organs, treats emaciation and middle-jiao injury, and replenishes... [Text fragment]. One dose prepared by nine steaming and nine sun-drying processes, added with Achyranthes bidentata (Niuxi), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Rehmannia glutinosa (Dihuang), Dipsacus asper (Xuduan), and Taxillus chinensis (Sangjisheng), treats conditions resembling stroke with facial paralysis and hemiplegia. Long-term use can also help fast (Xiuliang). Use Jusheng and white honey in equal parts mixed and taken. For patients... White sesame oil is extracted, with white being superior, hence the name.
The flavor is sweet. Raw seeds have a cold nature and treat diseases; roasted seeds have a hot nature and induce disease; steamed seeds have a warm nature and tonify the body. Raw seeds treat external heat due to phlegm-fluid retention forming癖 (Pi - accumulation).
[Discussion] Hemp seed is planted in April and harvested in late summer, completing its cycle through Fire and Earth, resulting in such oily richness. This truly occurs at the convergence of extreme Yang, disseminating... resisting cold and heat. Its black color connects to the Kidney, endowing it with the exclusive qi of Tianyi (One Water), especially capable of moistening the five zang organs. In treating wind disorders, credit goes to enriching blood. Its application differs from other herbs. Essentially, the essence transformed from food and drink in the human body enters the vessels; its harmony... Hemp seed's lipid richness already manifests... reflected in color? **Sesame Oil (Mazhi)**
Roasted until cooked, pressed while hot to extract oil, called raw oil. It can only be used for lighting lamps. It must be boiled further to become cooked oil, which is edible and not suitable for lamp oil. (Li Shizhen) For medicinal use, black sesame oil is superior; white sesame oil is secondary.
The flavor is sweet, and the nature is slightly cold. Raw oil treats epidemic febrile toxins, internal intestinal heat, drains toxic qi from the Triple Burner, unblocks the large and small intestines, treats heart pain caused by roundworms, and retained placenta in postpartum women. Grown from hemp... If boiled... sparks appear. Promotes pain relief and swelling reduction. (Also) Toxin: pour one bowl of sesame oil, add one ingredient of burnt hair (Yurong) boiled... Fry scallions in oil until black, apply hot while rotating with hand to self-resolve. Carbuncle... bowl, divided into five doses, consumed in one day, preventing toxic qi from attacking internally, pre-emptively resolving measles/pox... Internally, stir with willow branch until thick like honey. Take two or three clam shells per dose; adults take two he.
Bian Que's oil preparation method: Zhi Zhi Fang uses half a cup of sesame oil and half a cup of child's urine. When encountering epidemic warmth... Take half liang of sesame oil and one liang of good honey, boil together for dozens of boils, take warm to induce evacuation.
[Discussion] The reason sesame oil is best at detoxifying lies in its cycle through Fire and Earth times, yet it disseminates the transformational qi of Metal and Water, providing lipid richness, precisely countering internal heat accumulation.
Raw seeds, if eaten in excess, cause cold diseases. Those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold and diarrhea should not eat them. Cooked, they make food delicious, but must be cooked daily. After overnight storage, they...
**Sesame Cake (Maku Bing)**
