Only Pine Soot Ink (Songyan Mo) is suitable for medicinal use. (Collected from burning pine, dissolved with Ulmus macrocarpa Bark Decoction [Yupi Zhi] to break down glue and mixed, or with added aromatic herbs.) It is best if aged for one year.
Coarse inks are often made from soot collected from kiln flues, repeatedly soaked in Sesame Oil [Hama You], roasted over fire, and then processed. Although such ink appears black and glossy, it must not be used.
Pine Soot Ink has a pungent and warm nature. It stops bleeding, generates flesh, promotes healing of metallic wounds, treats postpartum blood dizziness, metrorrhagia, and sudden hemorrhage. (Grind with vinegar and take.) It also treats bloody dysentery and pediatric "Ke Wu" (sudden fright/illness caused by strangers). (Crush, sift into powder, and take with warm water.) If a thorn or foreign body enters the eye, applying ink to the pupil area will expel it. Pine Soot Ink belongs to Metal and contains Fire properties; when used medicinally, it strongly assists tonifying effects. (Zhu Danxi) For urgent hematemesis, use two qian of Human Hair Charcoal [Xueyu Hui], dissolve two qian of Donkey-hide Gelatin [Ejiao] in white boiled water, add one cup each of Child’s Urine [Tongbian], Fresh Lotus Root Juice [Sheng Ou Zhi], Spiny Dock Juice [Ciji Zhi], and Rehmannia Root Juice [Shengdi Zhi]. Grind high-quality ink into a thick black liquid, mix well, and take once while warm. According to *Zhunsheng*, using vinegar-processed Rhubarb [Dahuang] etc., which enter the Blood level, guides blood downward, transforming rebellion into compliance. This method is extremely stable and effective. Some practitioners use charred Rhubarb [Chao Huanglian] as the main ingredient, assisted by charred Gardenia [Zhizi] and Cyperus Rhizome [Xiangfu], achieving reliable results. The use of ink in this formula requires genuine Pine Soot Ink; otherwise, misuse may lead to adverse consequences.
[Identification and Treatment] Regardless of whether it is Huimo, Jingmo, or Oil Soot Ink, do not use those that are glossy like lacquer and fragrant. For decoctions, grind for oral administration; for pills and powders, roast finely, or soak in water until soft, wrap in paper, bake, and crush.
Stone Alkali [Shijian] resembles stone and is similar to alkali, hence its name. It originates from Jining and other places in Shandong Province. Its preparation method involves harvesting plants such as Artemisia and Polygonum, soaking them in pits, draining, drying, burning to ash, leaching with original water to extract juice, adding two to three jin of flour per hundred jin, allowing it to precipitate and solidify like stone over time, and shipping it with the juice to various regions. It is highly profitable for washing clothes and fermenting dough. Other places use ash from stoves to leach concentrated juice, which also removes grease and aids fermentation. (Li Shizhen)
Stone Alkali tastes pungent and bitter, has a warm temperature, and is slightly toxic. It clears damp-heat, relieves heart pain, resolves phlegm, breaks up masses, eliminates food stagnation, and washes away dirt and grease. Dosage should be adjusted according to deficiency or excess; excessive consumption damages the body. (Zhu Danxi) When combined with Calcined Alum [Duanshi], it can slough off muscle tissue, ulcerate carbuncles and scrofula, remove necrotic tissue, and treat moles, warts, and hemorrhoidal nodules with miraculous efficacy. (Li Shizhen)
It has dissolving and descending properties, capable of cleansing dirt and grease within the intestines and stomach. (Wang Kentang) Formula for breaking accumulations and moving Qi: Stone Alkali 3 qian, Hawthorn Fruit [Shanzha] 3 liang, Ferula Resin [Awei] 5 qian, Pinellia Tuber [Banxia] and Soap Pod [Zaojia] processed with water 1 liang. Grind into powder, dissolve Ferula in vinegar, cook into a paste to form pills. Formula for all eye diseases: Select white alkali, removing black fragments, wrap in seven layers of thick paper, hang in a ventilated place for forty-nine days, take out, grind extremely fine, and apply daily to the eyes. For moles and warts: Flower Alkali and mineral ash, boil these two ingredients in wheat straw ash juice until dry, divide equally into powder, prick the lesion with a needle, mix with water, and apply. Apply three times over three days, then remove. Must be freshly prepared to be effective. For toothache caused by worms: Fill the cavity with Flower Alkali to stop pain immediately.
Stone Alkali possesses Yin-damp nature, moistening, descending, and softening hardness. Therefore, it is unsuitable for the gastrointestinal tract. Ingestion causes diarrhea; those with weak spleen and stomach should avoid it. (Chen Shigong)
