Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger)
Acrid, sweet, and warm. The aroma and flavor are both dense. It floats and ascends; it is Yang. It circulates Yang and disperses stagnation, repels evil and expels pathogens. Enters the Lung meridian, opens the stomach, stops vomiting.
It addresses conditions of rebellious Qi that fails to disperse. Shengjiang circulates Yang and dissipates Qi, (simultaneously) eliminates phlegm (possessing the functions of warming the middle, removing dampness, opening up, and flushing out). It directs Qi downward, opens the five Zang and six Fu organs, unblocks the four limbs and joints. Returns to the five Zang organs, removes wind-pathogens and alternating chills and fever, as well as cough with rebellious Qi. Long-term consumption enhances spiritual clarity. Mix equal parts of Shengjiang and Xingren paste (Apricot Seed Paste), decoct into an ointment, and take with water. (Indicated for) those unable to eat. Use ginger juice to apply to red eyes.
Acrid and warm, benefits the Yuan Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, warms the middle.
When the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is mild and vigorous in its transportation and transformation, it can resist clear-damp Qi and miasmas from mountainous regions.
Taking Tongbian (Child's Urine) leads to immediate resolution. This is because...
Two qian, crush to obtain natural juice, one wine cup, expose overnight...
One sheng, boil until cooked, consume all to be cured. Dry vomiting and cold extremities...
Take four he, swallow slowly with the dregs. It also kills abdominal...
Mix for washing, use five sheng of water, boil down to one sheng.
[Discussion] All substances have exterior and interior aspects, just like the human body. Shengjiang is acrid; retaining the peel enters the Lung and opens the stomach. When Lung and Stomach combine, Yang Qi can circulate. Therefore...
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger - Fresh Dried)
This refers to fresh ginger dried naturally while retaining the peel. Its usage is not different from Shengjiang, but it lacks moistening properties. It can be used in pills and powders. Compared to Ganjiang (Dried Ginger - Processed), it is less hot.
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger - Processed)
Preparation: Take fresh ginger, soak in water for three days, remove the peel, place in running water for six days, scrape off the peel again, sun-dry, place in a porcelain jar, and ferment for three days. The color turns black, then it is formed. Ginger with peel retains cold nature; ginger without peel retains heat nature. This is not because the peel itself is cold. Generally, retaining the peel allows action on the exterior where heat dissipates; removing the peel allows retention in the Middle Jiao where heat remains. (Zhu Danxi).
Flavor and Nature: Raw is acrid, processed is bitter. Qi is thin, flavor is dense. Half-sinking half-floating, can ascend and descend, belongs to Yin within Yang. It is a Qi-level herb for the Heart and Spleen meridians. Jiegu said:

[Discussion] The taste of Ginger is acrid; Acrid corresponds to Metal in the Five Elements. However, it is planted in April, sprouts in May, and new buds grow rapidly around the Autumn She festival. Buds are harvested at the Autumn Equinox. Soft leaves full fire... Fu... Belongs to Metal. Pao (Processed)... Still not... Qi is the spirit of Fire... Remains. People only know to use... Treats Middle Qi deficiency-cold.
Excessive use depletes Yuan Qi; must use raw Gancao (Licorice Root) to moderate it. (Li Dongyuan) Those using Ganjiang to treat the Middle must avoid flaming upward; this must be known. (Hai Zang) Gan...
