This is Qingyan (Green Salt). It originates from the regions inhabited by the Qiang and Rong barbarians. It is also known as Qiangyan (Qiang Salt) or Huyan (Hu Salt). The salt from the North Sea is green, while that from the South Sea is red. (Here, "North Sea" and "South Sea" refer to the north and south of the Western Sea, respectively.) This Rongyan (Rong Salt) exists in two colors: green and red. Medical prescriptions use only Qingyan (Green Salt) and do not use Hongyan (Red Salt), unaware that both are named Rongyan. (*Xiliang Ji* records: Salt produced in the Qingyan Pool is square, half an inch in size, shaped like stone, and very sweet and delicious. *Buhu Lu* records: Peach-blossom salt is produced in the Zhangye Pool, colored like peach blossoms, varying with the waxing and waning of the moon.) The eulogy states: There are two peaks on the Salt Mountain, presenting two colors of texture. The red one resembles cinnabar, and the black one resembles lacquer. Some call it Rongyan, which can be used to treat diseases. This description mentions only the red and black colors, omitting white. Presumably, the white variety is Guangmingyan (Bright Light Salt), whereas the green and red varieties are Rongyan. (Cited from Li Shizhen's *Bencao Gangmu*)
The flavor is salty, and the nature is cold. Its efficacy is similar to that of common table salt. Because it undergoes no frying or refining processes, its taste is salty with a hint of sweetness. In medicinal use, it seems superior to common salt. It primarily assists the Kidney (Water Organ), benefits essence and qi, brightens the eyes, and treats heart pain, abdominal pain, hematuria (blood in urine), hematemesis (vomiting blood), bleeding from teeth and tongue, eliminates accumulations and masses in the five zang organs, resolves stagnations in the heart and abdomen, strengthens muscles and bones, and dispels toxins and parasites. (Synthesized from various materia medica texts) Formulas and books indicate its use in treating vertigo, distension and fullness, lower back pain, seminal emission, leukorrhea, exhaustion-type strangury, and urinary incontinence. Rongyan has a sweet and salty flavor; its function lies in stopping bleeding and guiding medicine into the Kidney, treating stasis, redness, dryness, and dimness in the eyes.
[Formula for Using Both Salts] Lihesan (Lychee Pit Powder). Treats hernia, swelling of the scrotum, and unbearable pain. Take fourteen fresh lychee pits, burn them to ash but preserve their properties; take Star Anise (Stellariae Fructus, roasted), Agarwood (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Woody Fragrance (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Qingyan (Green Salt), and common salt, each one qian; take Sichuan Chinaberry Kernel (Meliae Semen) and Small Fennel (Foeniculi Fructus), each two qian. Grind into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with hot wine on an empty stomach.
[Formula for Strengthening Teeth and Brightening Eyes] Qingyan (Green Salt) two liang, Baiyan (White Salt) four liang, Sichuan Pepper (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) four liang. Decoct to obtain the liquid, mix with the salts, and stir-fry until dry. Use daily to brush teeth and wash eyes; this ensures freedom from dental and ocular diseases.
[Formula for Using White Salt Alone] (According to Mr. Li, this refers to Guangmingyan [Bright Light Salt], but it is uncertain whether the white salt produced in Zhejiang and Fujian is indeed called Guangmingyan; further investigation is needed.) Treats leakage of essence and leukorrhea. Take Snow-white Salt one liang, and Zhujin Guji Wan (Solidify Essence and Consolidate Benefit Pill). Administer once a day, removing fire toxicity. Additionally, take White Poria (Poria) and Chinese Yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), each one liang, grind into powder, mix with jujube flesh and honey, and form pills the size of wu-tzu seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, washed down with jujube decoction. This formula uses sweetness to balance saltiness, benefiting both the Spleen and Kidney.
[Discussion] Rongyan comes from the Western Rong region. Like other salts, it is condensed from the descending and moistening qi, but it is produced in the extreme west. Cold water is nurtured within the maternal qi, so its medicinal effect seems superior, and it can treat various blood disorders, surpassing common salt. When Rongyan is used in warming and tonifying formulas, it utilizes the qi of primordial yin to harmonize yang and guide it back to yin. For example, Chenxiang Cishi Wan (Agarwood and Magnetite Pill) for treating tinnitus and vertigo, and Erzhi Wan (Two Immortals Pill) for treating lower back pain in the elderly, exemplify this. Or, yin and yang are balanced and used together, allowing extreme yang to root in extreme yin. For instance, Suojing Wan (Lock Essence Pill) for treating baiyin (seminal discharge or leukorrhea) follows this principle. When added to astringent formulas for collapsing conditions, it harmonizes yin to allow yin to guard yang. For example, Shuizhong Jindan (Golden Elixir in Water) for treating seminal emission operates thus. Or, when incorporated into blood-invigorating formulas, it establishes the foundation of primordial yin to harmonize blood. For example, Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) for treating kidney fatigue and dribbling strangury illustrates this. By deducing from these cases, one can exhaust the variations.
[Processing] Wash with warm water to remove dust and dirt, sun-dry, and then use in prescriptions.
