Origins vary. *Guanghai Zhi* (Records of the Guihai Region) states that in the stone caves of Rongzhou, Yizhou, there is a great abundance of Shanzhongru (Calcitum). Looking up at the places where the stone veins surge upward, one finds "milk beds" (accumulations of calcite), white as jade and snow. These beds hang down like inverted peaks; the tips gradually sharpen and elongate like icicles. The ends are thin and light, hollow like goose feathers. Milk droplets fall continuously, condensing as they drip. This is the most refined form of Shanzhongru. It is collected by holding bamboo tubes upside down to catch it. Smelting experts consider the ends of the "goose quill" (hollow tube-like formations) that are particularly light, clear, resembling mica or fingernails, to be superior. Those that are lustrous, thin like bird feathers or cicada wings, and entirely white are suitable for consumption. Those not like this should strictly be avoided, as they can kill people more swiftly than poison (Sun Simiao). Those resembling cicada wings are first-rate; those resembling fingernails are second-rate; those resembling goose quills are inferior (Xiao Bing). Another method: Obtain Shanzhongru from Shaozhou, regardless of thickness, provided the color is bright, clean, and lustrous, making it suitable for processing. Only yellow and red colors are unusable. Currently, people regard only the hollow goose-quill type as best, hence its alternative name, Eguan Shi (Goose Quill Stone) (Li Buchue).
The taste is sweet and acrid; the nature is warm. When exposed to fire, it becomes highly toxic. It primarily treats cough with rebellious Qi (coughing with shortness of breath), tonifies Yuan Qi (original Qi), stabilizes the five Zang organs, supplements deficiency and damage, treats weakness and cold pain in the legs, exhaustion of the lower Jiao (lower burner), strengthens Yin (essence/fluids), treats seminal emission, and long-term use promotes fertility. It eliminates cold-type cough and excessive thirst associated with Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Combined with other herbs, it treats consumptive lung disease due to deficiency-labor, coughing blood due to deficient Yuan Qi, and dysentery with sliding emission due to deficiency-cold of the intestines and stomach, as well as seminal sliding due to deficiency of True Yuan. Shanzhongru is the spiritual fluid of stones, possessing the complete qualities of the mountain body; thus, its efficacy is vigorous and fierce. It is suitable only for patients with genuine Mingmen Fire Deficiency (deficiency of fire at the gate of vitality). Otherwise, careful examination is required (Zi You, Ben Cao Gang Mu). Whenever Shanzhongru is taken for three days, tonification must continue for three days; if taken for ten days, tonification must continue for ten days. To eat sufficiently, decoct bones of cattle, sheep, cheetahs, or deer into juice and drink them freely as soup. Do not consume grain rice or spoiled meat, and abstain from sexual intercourse. After one month, when Jing-Qi (essence and Qi) is full and abundant, flowing through all meridians, and the body feels warm with muscle bulging around the navel, this indicates the medicine is effective. Sexual activity may then be resumed slightly, but not frequently, to prevent the sudden depletion of medicinal Qi, which would cause further harm. Guard against this carefully (Ben Cao Gang Mu).
Combined with Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Baicha (White Beeswax), Xiangya Mo (Powdered Ivory), Zhenzhu (Pearl), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), Guiban (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis - preserved character, finely ground), Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum), Zhu Zhuxie (Bamboo borings), and Hongqian (Red Lead), it treats Guang Chuang Jie Du (chancre toxins), necrotic nasal bridges, and genital erosion, showing miraculous effects. It treats Wind-Deficiency Consumptive Damage and weakness in the waist and legs. **Shanzhongru Jian Decoction**: Use three liang of processed Shanzhongru powder, placed in a silk bag. Decoct in one sheng of cow's milk until reduced by one-third. Remove the bag and drink the milk, divided into two doses, once daily. Vomiting or diarrhea should not occur. Slight loose stools in deficiency-cold constitutions are acceptable. One bag can be boiled thirty times until potency is exhausted; replace with a new bag. After each boiling, wash the bag thoroughly to allow air circulation. Feed the residue mixed with flour to chickens; their eggs are beneficial for patients (Official Cui’s Formula). **Fenxiang Tuoge San** (Incense-Burning Chest-Penetrating Powder): Treats all types of consumptive cough and chest/epigastric stuffiness. Mix equal parts of Eguan Shi (Goose Quill Stone), Xionghuang (Realgar), Foer Cao (Asteriscus Herba), and Kuandonghua (Farfarae Flos) into powder. Use one qian per dose, burn on an incense burner, and inhale the smoke through a tube into the throat twice daily. For Lung-Deficiency wheezing urgency that persists continuously: Use five qian of bright raw Shanzhongru powder and three liang of wax, melt together, steam in a rice steamer until cooked, grind into pills the size of wu zi (wuzeia seeds). Take one pill with warm water. Note: Raw Shanzhongru should only be administered to patients with extreme Lung Deficiency; it should not be used indiscriminately.
[Discussion] Stones form by inheriting vigorous and fierce Qi; their texture is the hardest and heaviest, belonging to turbid Yin. When the most refined and fierce Qi transforms into Shanzhongru, it occupies the clear aspect, thus being named Yang, and greatly benefits Qi. Is Shanzhongru not Yang within Yin? For patients with extreme Lung Deficiency, it tonifies Yang Qi in the Lungs and strongly fortifies Yuan Qi in the Lower Jiao. It should not be lightly administered unless there is genuine Yang Deficiency. Even if it cures the disease, Su (Atractylodis Rhizoma) should be avoided for life because Su can disturb Shanzhongru. (Just as a weak fire needs wind to ignite, while a strong fire becomes dangerous if fanned excessively.) *Zhongshu Shu* (Book of Tree Planting) states: When digging holes for fruit trees, adding a small amount of Shanzhongru powder and sealing it tightly results in more fruit with better flavor. Adding a little between the roots and bark of old trees makes them flourish again. Applying this to the human body, its assistance to Yuan Qi is significant. However, mineral drugs have fierce Qi that easily damages Yin Qi. Long-term use leads to disharmony of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) and generation of other syndromes. If mistakenly given to Yin-Deficient individuals, it is like adding firewood to a fire.
*Wulei Xianggan Zhi* (Records of Mutual Induction among Material Classes) states: When taking Shanzhongru, avoid Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Su (Atractylodis Rhizoma); violators often die. For ordinary people with declining Yangming Qi, using this combined with other herbs to rescue decline is acceptable, stopping when equilibrium is restored. What is wrong with this? Ignorant people, benefiting from the sudden surge of Yang Qi, indulge in lust, causing hidden damage to Jing-Qi. The mineral Qi remains alone, causing solitary Yang to blaze fiercely. Over time, Ying and Wei become disharmonious, leading to Lin (dysuria) and Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst), transforming into abscesses and sores. Is this the fault of the mineral drug, or self-inflicted? The warnings of sages cannot be fully recorded (Ben Cao Gang Mu).
[Processing] Li Buchue’s method for taking Shanzhongru: Obtain Shanzhongru from Shaozhou, regardless of thickness, selecting only those with bright, clean, and lustrous colors (avoid yellow and red). Place in gold or silver vessels. Submerge these vessels in a large pot of water and boil until the water bubbles like fish eyes. Add water as it decreases. Boil for three to seven days if the quantity is small, or seven to nine days if large. Wait until dry and the color turns yellowish-white, indicating it is ripe. If unsure if it is unripe, boil for ten days. Remove and drain. Boil again in clear water for half a day; if the water remains clear and unchanged, stop. The Shanzhongru is now non-toxic. Place in a porcelain mortar and grind with a jade pestle dipped in water. Add water when it feels dry, maintaining a consistency like thin rice wash. Grind for four to five days until it feels smooth and glossy like white fish scales in books. Wash with water; particles that do not fall off with the water are ripe, while those that fall must be ground further. Clarify and take, then dry in the sun. Take one qian and half, mixed with warm wine, on an empty stomach. It can also be used in pills and powders. The yellow, turbid water from boiling Shanzhongru must not be consumed, as it damages the throat and lungs, causes headache, or persistent diarrhea. If ingested accidentally, eating pork resolves the toxicity. Lu Ziyou says: Classics state that weak water overcoming fire forms high mountains and Shanzhongru texture. Although similar to water, it is uniquely vigorous and fierce, indicating Fire overcomes Water. Processing involves boiling with water, balancing Fire and Water. Since Water surpasses Fire, the fierceness is somewhat pacified. Modern methods using fire instead exacerbate this fierceness, leading to many cases of mineral toxicity and burning sensations.
