Originates from the valleys and mountains of Mount Tai. Its color is pale purple, and its texture is crystal clear. Regardless of size, it possesses five edges. Both ends resemble arrowheads. Compared with Bai Shiyin (Quartz, White), its medicinal potency should be doubled. (He) There are many production areas. Some have very peculiar and magnificent shapes, some have deep colors that are particularly excellent, some are very bright. But some are small and black, some have good芒角 (sharp points/edges) but are small and thin. The best quality must have five edges as if cut by a knife, with purple color extending to the top like a Chupu (ancient dice/game piece). (Taiping Yulan)
The taste is sweet and acrid. The nature is warm. The taste is stronger than the qi/nature. It belongs to Yin within Yang, and has a descending property. It enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Changshi (Long Stone) serves as its Shi (guide drug). It fears Bianqing (Azurite) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). It dislikes Beijia (Turtle Shell), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Maijujiang (likely a specific herb or typo for another herb, kept as Maijujiang). It primarily treats coughing and rebellious Qi caused by pathogenic factors in the heart and abdomen. It treats ascending Qi, heart and abdominal pain, cold-heat pathogenic factors, and stagnant Qi. It treats women suffering from infertility for ten years due to Wind-Cold invading the uterus. It tonifies deficiency of Heart Qi. It calms palpitations and fright. It stabilizes the Hun and Po (ethereal and corporeal souls). It fills the Lower Jiao. It stops Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome). It eliminates chronic cold in the stomach. It dissipates carbuncles and swellings. Long-term use warms the Middle Jiao. Formulary texts treat Qi syndromes with distension and fullness, Epilepsy syndromes with palpitations, dysentery with red and white discharge, and cases of deficiency with unsettled palpitations; it is suitable to add this herb. Women who take it may conceive. (Quan) Its nature is heavy and sedating. Its qi is warm and tonifying. Therefore, for unsettled Heart Spirit, deficiency of Liver Blood, and women with empty-cold in the Blood Sea leading to infertility, it is an essential herb. (Zhongchun) When combined with Fuling (Poria) and Renshen (Ginseng Root), it treats knotted Qi in the heart. When combined with Tianxiong (Aconite Lateral Root) and Changpu (Acorus Rhizome), it treats Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea), Xu Lao (Consumption/Fatigue) with palpitations. It tonifies deficiency, stops fright, and promotes appetite. Zi Shiyin (Purple Quartz) 5 liang, crushed to the size of beans, washed once with water, boiled in one dou of water until three sheng remain. Take slowly. Or cook into porridge. If the water dries up, it can be boiled again. Combined with Baiwei (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Aiye (Mugwort Leaf), Baijiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Shanyuzhu (Corni Fructus), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), it treats empty-cold of the uterus and infertility.
[Discussion] Purple is a color intermixed with red and black. Ziyu suggests this symbolizes the intersection of Kan (Water/Kidney) and Li (Fire/Heart), which roughly aligns with the therapeutic indications of Quartz, fitting the pathology. Why say this? Because Kan contains Li, thus Yin is transformed by Yang. Water is the basis for the gestation of Qi, yet it relies on Yang to transform Yin. Li contains Kan, thus Yang is enriched by Yin. Fire is the basis for the flourishing of Qi, yet it relies on Yin to enrich Yang. This is Water combining with Fire to generate Qi, and Fire combining with Water to facilitate Qi transformation. This is called the intersection of Kan and Li. To generate is to transform; to transform is to generate. This substance possesses the divine mechanism of the harmony of Water and Fire. What it calls "tonifying deficiency" is precisely tonifying the Qi of harmonized Water and Fire. Reviewing the treatments by Jiao: In the Upper Jiao, it tonifies Heart Qi and calms palpitations; in the Lower Jiao, it fills the Lower Jiao and treats Wind-Cold of the uterus; in the Middle Jiao, it eliminates chronic cold in the stomach, and long-term use warms the Middle. All these utilize its refined and potent Qi transformation, suitable for its pure essence. This aligns with Kan meeting Li and Li meeting Kan, greatly assisting the True Yuan (Original Qi) of the human body. (For example, cold-heat pathogenic factors and cold-induced distension/fullness are false images resulting from insufficiency; likewise, palpitations, weakness, dysentery, excessive overthinking, and turbid syndromes are empty images seen from insufficiency. This product completely relies on the Original Qi of Kan-Li intersection for transformation and generation, hence it can treat them.) It mainly focuses on tonifying Original Qi; therefore, herbs that warm cold or clear heat all require it to achieve efficacy. (See [some] Pill, treating distension and fullness from long-standing cold Qi accumulation; Fengyin Tang, also treating Epilepsy syndromes belonging to Heat.) *Ben Cao Jing Jiu* (Old Record) only mentions tonifying Heart Qi because through Kan-Li intersection, Heart Qi becomes sufficient. Generally, when Li meets Kan, Heart Blood is sufficient. However, Li borrows Kan for its function, ultimately returning to tonifying Heart Qi.
Miu believes it should only be used temporarily and not for long-term consumption. This applies to all stone-type minerals, not just Quartz. Women whose infertility is due to Yin deficiency with Hyperactive Fire, preventing the reception of spermatic Qi, should avoid it.
[Processing] Calcine over fire, quench in vinegar seven times, grind into powder. Process using the water-flying method three or four times. Dry in the sun before use. Overconsumption of Zi Shiyin may cause alternating chills and fever; drinking alcohol will resolve it.
