**She Lang Ya (Ranunculus ternatus):** Grows in various locations. The seedlings resemble *Duchesnea indica* (Snakeberry) but are denser and larger. The color is deep green. The root is black, resembling the teeth of a beast. The roots are harvested in the third and eighth months and used after sun-drying. (Source: *Bao Ming Ji*) It is produced in Jiankang and the Three Fu regions; those with white color are of superior quality. (Recorded by Fan Jiran) Its flavor is bitter, pungent, and sour, its nature is cold, and it is toxic. *Meliis Fructus* (Wuyi) serves as its guiding herb, and it is incompatible with *Sanguisorbae Radix* (Diyu). It governs evil qi, hot qi, scabies, itching, malignant sores, ulcers, and hemorrhoids. It expels white intestinal worms. It treats wind-induced skin itching. Decocting the juice for washing malignant sores kills all parasites within the abdomen and viscera. It stops bloody dysentery. In medical formularies, it is used to treat traumatic bleeding, hematuria, heart pain, and epigastric pain. For conditions caused by consuming cold foods leading to internal cold, it should be administered together with warming and purgative herbs such as *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Fuzi), *Crotonis Fructus* (Badou), and *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma* (Renshen).
**Shi Long Rui (Ranunculus japonicus):** There are two types: aquatic and terrestrial. The aquatic type has smooth leaves and round fruits; the terrestrial type (highly toxic) has hairy leaves and sharp fruits. Only the aquatic type is used. It grows in wetlands near water, reaching a height of about one chi. Its root resembles *Capsella bursa-pastoris* (Jicai). The seedlings emerge in clusters in the third month. The stem is round with branches; each branch bears three leaves. The leaves are green, smooth, with three tips and many fine serrations. In the fourth and fifth months, it opens small yellow flowers and bears small fruits, resembling young mulberries, which are greenish-blue. When rubbed apart, the seeds are very fine.
Its flavor is bitter, sour, and salty, and its qi is neutral. It governs the calming of Kidney and Stomach qi, tonifies insufficient Yin qi, treats spermatorrhea and cold penis, and clears Heart heat and dryness. It drives out Wind-Cold-Damp Bi obstruction, eliminates evil qi from the Heart and abdomen, benefits the joints, and moistens the skin. The *Da Tusi Zi Wan* (Large Dodder Seed Pill) in medical formularies is used to treat Kidney Qi deficiency and damage from overwork. Shi Long Rui is a mild tonic herb; its efficacy is comparable to that of *Lycii Cortex* (Gouqi) and *Rubiae Fructus* (Fupenzi). (Recorded by Li Shizhen)
[Discussion] Shi Long Rui tonifies insufficient Yin qi, sharing the same function as Gouqi and Fupenzi. However, it can only tonify Yin qi and lacks efficacy for deficiency syndromes such as spermatorrhea and cold penis. Therefore, regarding Heart heat... (Text ends abruptly)
