Produced in the prefectures of Qian and Ji in Lingnan. Currently, it is also found in Huai-Zhe, Shaanxi, and Kui regions. It parasitizes on rocks or in shaded areas on trees. It sends out strip-like roots, covered with white and red hairs, along with short leaves attached to them. The large leaves resemble those of Cyrtomium fortunei (Guanzhong). The root is flat and long, somewhat resembling ginger. People call it Monkey Ginger (Houjiang) or Stone Hair Ginger. (The root's flavor is bitter, and its nature is warm. It enters the Foot-Shaoyin meridian. It treats breaking blood stasis and stopping bleeding, supplements fractures caused by trauma, dissipates toxic gases in bones, and alleviates pain from wind-blood stagnation. [When blood harmonizes, moving bi-syndrome resolves.] It treats spasticity from Crane-Knee Wind (He Xi Feng) due to stroke, diarrhea, strangury, spermatorrhea, and rectal prolapse. For chronic diarrhea leading to extreme debility where other medicines fail, use powder of Monkey Ginger, stewed inside a pig kidney until cooked, and eat it; the diarrhea stops immediately. This is because the Kidney governs the two lower orifices; chronic diarrhea belongs to Kidney deficiency and cannot be treated solely by regulating the Spleen and Stomach. [Li Shizhen]) Whenever there is lower jiao deficiency after dysentery, improper care, long-distance travel, sexual exhaustion, or external pathogenic invasion causing flaccidity or pain/numbness in both legs, resulting in Dysentery-Wind (Li Feng), one should use Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (Decoction for Expelling Rheumatism and Nourishing the Liver and Kidneys), adding four jin of Tiger Bone, and grinding one-third part of Gu Sui Bu (Drynaria Rhizome) together to extract the juice, taken with wine. Externally, decoct Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Du Niuxi), nodes of Cunninghamia wood, Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae (Bixie), Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi), and Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum (Nanxing) in water, and frequently fumigate and wash.
(Li Shizhen) Frequent rubbing of teeth can treat loose teeth about to fall out, tinnitus, and ear blockage.
[Discussion] Gu Sui Bu (Drynaria Rhizome) parasitizes in shaded areas on trees and rocks, gathering Yin Qi. Its flavor is bitter, and its nature is warm. Bitter corresponds to Fire, and warmth corresponds to the Qi of Lesser Fire. It inherits Yin Qi. Its Qi can dissipate toxins. It may treat blood disorders. Lower jiao deficiency. Mr. Miu states it should not be used with drying-wind herbs.
[Processing] Scrape off the yellow-red hairs with a copper knife, cut finely, mix with honey to moisten, steam in a steamer for one day, then sun-dry for use. For urgent use, simply dry-roast; steaming is optional.
Also known as Elephopus Herb (E Bu Shi Cao). Grows in rock crevices and damp, shady places. Two to three cun high. Thin stems and small leaves, resembling young Coriander (Yansui). Odor pungent. Not suitable for human consumption; even geese do not eat it. Sprouts in winter, blooms with small yellow flowers in summer. [Li Shizhen]
Flavor pungent, odor strong. Enters the Hand-Taiyin meridian. Opens nasal passages and breath. Benefits the nine orifices. Can detoxify and disperse carbuncles and swellings. Brightens the eyes, disperses eye redness, swelling, and corneal opacities (cloudy film).
(Discussion continues: ...reaches the utmost畅ness of Yang. Thus, it can connect Earth Qi to Heaven Qi.)
[Discussion] Shi Hu Sui (Centipeda minima) mostly grows in damp, shady places. Sprouts in winter, flowers in summer. It inherits the contracting nature of Yin, yet reaches the utmost unimpeded flow of Yang. Therefore, it can connect Earth Qi to Heaven Qi.
