The glutinous variety of *Ji* (Setaria italica var. glauca) belongs to the same species but is a different type. Currently, it is commonly referred to as *Shu* (Millet, specifically Broomcorn millet), and the term *Ji* is rarely used.

The flavor of *Shu* rice is sweet and warm. It primarily tonifies Qi and supplements the middle Jiao (Spleen and Stomach). (*Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu* citing *Bie Lu*). The character *Shu* shares the phonetic component with *Shu* (Summer heat), symbolizing Fire, making it a grain of the South. Its nature is extremely sticky and cloying.

[Discussion] *Shu* is the glutinous form of *Ji*. Its seedlings resemble those of *Su* (Foxtail millet) but are lower and smaller; its grains resemble *Su* but are smoother. There are several varieties: red, white, yellow, and black, and the seedling colors correspond accordingly.

They all share the sticky and cloying nature similar to Glutinous Rice (*Nuomi*).

However, *Bie Lu* states that it tonifies Qi and supplements the middle.

The pod is called *Jiao*, the leaf is called *Huo*, and the stalk is called *Qi*. Colors include black, white, yellow, brown, and green-spotted. The black variety is named *Wudou* (Black Soybean), which can be used in medicine or made into fermented soybeans (*Chi*) for food. The yellow variety is used to make tofu, extract oil, or brew sauce. The others are only suitable for making tofu or roasting for consumption. Among *Wudou*, the tight and small ones are considered "male" and are superior for medicinal use.

Black Soybean (*Heidadou*) has a sweet flavor and neutral qi (neutral implies a cooling property). It is the grain corresponding to the Kidney. Roasted, it becomes hot; boiled, it becomes cold; made into *Chi*, it becomes cold; brewed into paste or sprouted into *Huangjuan*, it becomes neutral.

It regulates the Middle Jiao, directs rebellious Qi downward, unblocks the Guan pulse, treats injuries causing dribbling and leakage, dissipates internal cold from accumulations and consolidations in the five Zang organs. Taken with wine, it treats abdominal pain caused by Yin Toxicity and expels water distension.

Boiled, it treats edema caused by Warm Toxicity and reduces heat-induced swelling. Boiled with ash from mulberry branches, it treats abdominal distension due to water drumming. It clears Heat-Bi in the stomach. Decocted with Licorice Root (*Gancao*), it treats postpartum wind affecting the head. It also treats dysentery with umbilical pain, directs Qi downward, invigorates blood, and resolves various toxins. Stored in ox gallbladder, it stops thirst. Boiled with salt and consumed regularly, it treats tinea pedis (Hong Kong foot) and water swelling.

[Discussion] Beans have five colors, each treating diseases of the five Zang organs. Therefore, the black one is the grain of the Kidney. However, its flavor is sweet, and sweet corresponds to the Spleen. Because black enters the Kidney, it also benefits the Spleen. This is precisely because the Spleen and Kidney are mutually transformative sources. (When Spleen and Kidney combine, they form the virtue of Earth and Water to establish the earth.
