Body heat is mostly due to blood deficiency. When blood heat causes body fever, it is a death syndrome and difficult to treat. Fire forcing blood upward leads to chaotic and reckless bleeding.
Clearing Fire: Hematemesis (vomiting blood) originating from the Stomach can be treated with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction), Baoming Shengdi Huang San (Life-Preserving Raw Rehmannia Powder), containing Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Digupi (Lycium Bark), Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and Shaoyao (Peony Root).
Nourishing Ying (Nutritive Qi): Epistaxis (nosebleed) and bloody nasal discharge originating from the Lung can be treated with Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root), Zishen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root, alternative name), Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root). Coughing up sputum with blood originating from the Kidney can be treated with Ziwan (Aster Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), and Dongguandong (Asparagus Tuber). Blood in phlegm and saliva originating from the Spleen can be treated with Gegen (Pueraria Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood), and Gancao (Licorice Root). For deficiency patterns, use Xiaojianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), or the aforementioned Baoming Shengdi Huang San (Life-Preserving Raw Rehmannia Powder) added with Tianmendong (Asparagus Tuber), Gouqizi (Goji Berry), and Gancao (Licorice Root) in equal parts, decocted in water and taken orally.
Nourishing Wei (Defensive Qi): Fenqi Zisu Yin (Separating Qi Perilla Decoction) is indicated for cases caused by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sadness, Fear, Fright).
Acupuncture: Points include Yinbai (SP2), Pishu (BL20), Shangwan (CV13), and Ganshu (BL18).
Lower Bleeding Accumulating in the Chest: If there is lower bleeding accumulating in the chest, with pain below the heart that cannot be touched, it is called "Accumulated Blood in the Middle Jiao," treated with Tao Ren Chengqi Tang (Persicae Semen and Magnolia Bark Decoction). If the lower abdomen is hard and full, urination is normal, stool is black, and there is pain below the navel that cannot be touched, it is called "Accumulated Blood in the Lower Jiao," treated with Didang Tang (Hit-and-kill Decoction). For hematemesis, use Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction) to promote downward movement.
Regulation: A large pulse with fever, or throat pain, indicates Qi deficiency. Use Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root, honey-fried), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Digupi (Lycium Bark), and Danggui Tou (Angelica Sinensis Root Head). For hemoptysis (coughing blood), use Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Futianzi (Cuscuta Seed), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chenpi (Citrus Peel), Gancao (Licorice Root), Xingren (Apricot Seed), and Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root). For epistaxis and cough, add Puhuang (Tamarillus Pollen) and Wubeizi Hui (Ash of Chinese Gallnut) to the above herbs, decocted and taken; this is effective.
External Treatment: Wet paper with well water and apply it to the center of the vertex. For left-sided epistaxis, tie a thread around the middle finger of the left hand; for right-sided, tie the right middle finger. If both sides bleed, tie both fingers. Alternatively, blow powdered charcoal made from burned Puhuang (Tamarillus Pollen) into the nose.
Clearing Heat and Descending Fire: Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) added with Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum). Decoct these herbs, mix with ink and water, and take orally.
