Ding Si and Ding Hai years (both are Tian Fu years)
The upper Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven, the central movement is Shaojiao Wood movement, and the lower Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth. When the movement and the Qi of Heaven are identical, it is called Tian Fu; here, both the movement and the Qi belong to Wood. The disaster occurs in the Third Palace,
which refers to the Zhen Palace in the East. Because the Wood Qi is insufficient, the disaster affects this area.
Gui Si and Gui Hai years (both are Tong Sui Hui years)
The upper Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven, the central movement is Shaozheng Fire movement, and the lower Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth. When the Heaven's Qi generates the movement, it is called Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation), i.e., Wood generates Fire. In years of Shun Hua, people feel comfortable and diseases are few. In the two years of Gui Si and Gui Hai, the Yangming Dry-Metal Qi desires to descend, but it is met by Fire movement, preventing its descent.
If this persists, Metal becomes Yu (stagnant/depressed), and upon release, it causes epidemics. Medicines should include Xie Bai San (Drain White Powder), decocted and taken cold in measured amounts, followed by Wu Wen Dan (Five Plagues Pill). The disaster occurs in the Ninth Palace, which is the Li Palace. Because the Fire movement is insufficient, the disaster affects this area. In Si-Hai years, Yangming Dry-Metal Qi should descend into the Earth, while Shaoyang Minister-Fire should move forward to govern the Earth. However, the Right Intercalary Qi of the previous year's Heaven governance (Yangming Dry-Metal) should descend to become the Left Intercalary Qi of the current Earth governance, but it fears the Earthly Red Fire Qi, as Fire Qi overcomes it. If the previous year's Chen-Xu year had excess Qi, causing the Heaven-governing Taiyang Cold-Water to not retreat, then the Right Intercalary Yangming cannot descend either. Encountering Fire movement until Gui Si and Gui Hai years, Fire meets and suppresses it, preventing descent. Since Metal desires to descend but is met by Fire, the Clear and Restrictive Qi flows, yet Heat counteracts it. Heat damages Lung Qi, so people suffer from drowsiness, restless sleep at night, dry throat with desire for drinking, etc. Metal Qi stagnates long-term in the upper body, causing coldness and white Qi rising. People suffer from Liver-Wood pathogen invasion, leading to vertigo, stiff and numb hands and feet, pain in both hypochondria, and blurred vision.
Ji Si and Ji Hai years (Tian Xing years)
The upper Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven, the central movement is Shaogong Earth movement, and the lower Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth. In Tian Xing years, Wood controls Earth, hence it is called "Bu Xiang De" (Not Getting Along), leading to disease,
though no plague occurs. This year's Earth movement is insufficient, overcome by the Heaven-governing Wind-Wood, so Wood assumes Earth's transformation characteristics, known as Bei Jian Ji (Lowly Supervisor Era). The disaster occurs in the Fifth Palace, which is the Central Palace. Because the Earth movement is insufficient, the disaster affects this area.
Yi Si and Yi Hai years
The upper Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven, the central movement is Shaoshang Metal movement, and the lower Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth. When the movement overcomes the Heaven's Qi, it is called Bu He (Disorder), i.e., Metal overcomes Wood. Although the illness is severe, plagues are few. The disaster occurs in the Seventh Palace, which is the Dui Palace. Because the Metal movement is insufficient, the disaster affects this area.
Xin Si and Xin Hai years
The upper Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven, the central movement is Shaoyu Water movement, and the lower Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth. When the movement generates the Heaven's Qi, it is called Xiao Ni (Minor Reversal), i.e., Water generates Wood, so illnesses are also mild. In Xin Si and Xin Hai years, Jun Fire desires to ascend but is met by Water movement, forming Fire Yu (stagnation), which releases as Fire Epidemic. Medicines should include Liang Ge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) and Dao Chi San (Guide Out Redness Powder), added with Bamboo Leaves, decocted and mixed with Wu Wen Dan for consumption. Plague contracted this year will only manifest when Fire obtains its proper position. The disaster occurs in the First Palace, which is the Kan Palace. Because the Water movement is insufficient, the disaster affects this area. In Si-Hai years, Jueyin Wind-Wood should advance to govern Heaven, while the Right Intercalary Qi of the previous year's Earth governance (Shaoyin Jun Fire) should ascend to become the Left Intercalary Qi of the new year's Heaven governance, but it fears the Heavenly Peng Water Qi, as Mercury/Water overcomes it. Si-Hai are Yin years, where Qi is often insufficient; if the Heaven-governing Jueyin cannot advance, the Left Intercalary Shaoyin also cannot take its place, whereas Yang years are different. Encountering Xin Si and Xin Hai years, although Yin years, the Water movement is insufficient. Jun Fire desires to ascend to Heaven but is suppressed by the central Water movement. In insufficient years, what can control and suppress Jun Fire is that weakness controls weakness; the central Water movement, blocked by Tian Peng, causes Water to prevail and Jun Fire to halt. Fire stagnation without ascending causes harm. Fire stagnation manifests only after obtaining its proper season. In Gui Wei year, Fire stagnation plague erupts, involving both Jun Fire and Xiang Fire. Fire stagnation without ascending causes disease in the Pericardium Collateral. Ascent is blocked, clear cold returns, generating cold morning and evening. People suffer from latent Yang causing internal heat and irritability, mental palpitations,
and alternating chills and fever. Tian Peng Water prevails, hindering Fire ascent, resulting in cool and cold climate, with people suffering from unresolved heat stagnation. Upon Fire stagnation release, sudden high heat occurs, leading to epidemic fevers, warm malaria, etc. Draining the internal heat and fire can stop the disease. Heaven's Qi is disturbed (Wind-Wood governs Heaven). Earth's Qi is correct (Minister-Fire governs Earth, Earth receives warmth). Wood is above, so wind arises from afar. Fire is below, so heat follows. Earth Qi receives warmth, so clouds and rain form, and dampness transformation proceeds. Wind, Dryness, Fire, and Heat alternate in victory and defeat; hibernating insects appear, and flowing water does not freeze.
First Qi: Cold begins to肃 (solemnly kill/restrict), killing Qi arrives, Yangming Dry-Metal is in charge. People suffer from cold in the lower right side. Metal corresponds to the West; when Metal is prosperous, it harms Liver,
so cold manifests in the lower right.
Second Qi: Cold does not depart, flowers and snow melt into ice, killing Qi operates, frost descends, grass withers and scorches, cold rains come frequently, Yang Qi transforms. Taiyang Cold-Water is in charge, hence the climate is thus. However, with Cold-Water as Guest Qi added to Jun Fire as Host Qi, the Qi must respond, so Yang re-transforms. People suffer from heat in the middle (Fire response causes heat in the middle), with external guest cold.
Third Qi: Heaven's administration spreads, wind rises on time, Jueyin Wind-Wood governing Heaven Qi is in charge. Jueyin adds to Shaoyang Minister-Fire, wind and fire combine, people suffer from tearing, tinnitus, vertigo, symptoms of Wind-Wood Qi manifestation.
Fourth Qi: Humid heat and dampness clash, competing in the upper left, with Jun Fire as Guest Qi added to Taiyin Host Qi. Fourth Qi is Heaven's Left Intercalary, so damp-heat competes in the upper left. People suffer from jaundice and edema (diseases caused by damp-heat).
Fifth Qi: Dryness and dampness alternate in superiority, deep Yin spreads, cold air touches the body, wind and rain occur. Guest is Wet Earth, Host is Dry Metal, dryness and dampness alternate, the climate is thus.
Sixth Qi: Fearful Fire commands, Yang Qi greatly transforms, hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze, Earth Qi erupts, grass grows, people feel comfortable. Shaoyang governs Earth, hence the climate is thus. Diseases are warm plagues, alternating cold and heat, hence warm plagues. This year, Jueyin governs Heaven so Earth Qi stagnates; Shaoyang governs Earth so Metal Qi stagnates. (The source of stagnation Qi transformation is explained in the previous chapter.)
