Wherever plagues (epidemic diseases) prevail, there is always foul and noxious qi fermenting and circulating within. Observe that when entering an area affected by plague, bluebottle flies are frequently seen everywhere, gathering in groups of hundreds or thousands.
Bluebottle flies are creatures fond of filth, and their sense of smell is extremely acute; they detect odors imperceptible to humans. Thus, as soon as human excrement is discarded, the flies immediately congregate. From this, we can infer that places where flies gather are precisely where the pathogenic qi of plague and filth accumulates. Furthermore, human filth qi often acts in conjunction with and reinforces this external foulness. In years of famine and disaster, corpses litter the fields, and putrid odors rise into the sky. Humans subjected to this miasma find it unbearable. Moreover, those who assist the sick and bury bodies on the roadside encounter a level of filth that is overwhelming and insurmountable. If people daily accustom themselves to these two types of qi, how could they avoid falling ill? If one does not consider methods to eliminate them, even if medicinal decoctions are taken, they will be ineffective. Even if they were effective, sparing only one or two individuals, the pervasive and spreading filth qi would continue to flourish without end. Is this not a matter for grave concern? Therefore, several prescriptions have been formulated and listed below. If, in plague-stricken areas, these substances are indeed burned or worn as amulets, the latent dissipation of filth qi will occur imperceptibly, and severe illnesses will suddenly resolve.
