In *Jingyue Quanshu* (Complete Works of Zhang Jingyue), the moxibustion-warming method (Yun Fa) is recorded, originally intended only for treating one syndrome of Taiyang disease: Jie Xiong (chest binding). However, it is unknown that this method is not only applicable to Jie Xiong. Whenever patients with plague (Wenyi) do not resolve through sweating immediately after medication, and after six or seven days, when sweating should occur but does not, accompanied by slight stuffiness and pain in the heart and abdomen, using the Yun Fa often results in profuse sweating and recovery. Thus, it is also an excellent prescription for inducing sweating in plague treatment. Because internal unblocking leads to external resolution. Furthermore, for all kinds of Jie Xiong, Pi Qi (stagnant qi), Zhi Jie (branch binding), and Zang Jie (organ binding) caused by plague and Taiyang disease, especially those patients with weak Middle Qi who cannot withstand aggressive medication, this method can make stagnant qi move and evil disperse, with miraculous effects. It also treats miscellaneous diseases. Regardless of cold or heat, it is effective for pain and stiffness in the chest, hypochondrium, heart, and abdomen.

Raw Scallion (Cong Bai), Raw Ginger (Sheng Jiang), Raw Radish (Luo Bo) (if unavailable, use radish seeds).
Jin's Note: The original formula states several liang each of scallion and ginger, double the amount of radish. I believe it is better to adjust according to symptoms. If there are exterior pathogens or qi stagnation, Raw Scallion is the sovereign herb; if there is much cold, Raw Ginger is the sovereign herb; if there is phlegm-food stagnation, Radish is the sovereign herb. Generally, equal parts are used, or slightly more scallion is acceptable.
Take several liang of each of the above herbs, pound them until slightly broken down. If pounded too finely, they become watery and difficult to wrap. Stir-fry in a pot until hot, then remove from fire. Wrap half in cloth and apply as a warm compress to the affected area. When it cools, take the hot portion from the pot again, wrapping and applying it. Rotate and replace until a penetrating warmth is felt. There will be no blockage remaining; sweating occurs and the patient recovers.

Anciently, there were three methods: Sweating (Han), Vomiting (Tu), and Purgation (Xia), with Sweating ranked first because when pathogens invade the human body, they cannot be resolved without sweating. Although Vomiting has a dispersing intent, it still awaits sweating to complete its efficacy. Purgation is used in emergencies when sweating is difficult. This indicates that regardless of whether it is Taiyang disease or plague, the merit of sweating is immense. Although plague generally does not suit forced sweating, sometimes latent pathogens break out from within, desiring to resolve via sweating, or the individual has robust constitution with surging Yang Qi that cannot open immediately, obtaining a prescription to induce sweating can assist, making sweat easy to produce and pathogens easy to disperse. Here, I have carefully selected several mild and harmless prescriptions for备用 (backup use). If the plague is mild, try it at the first sign of discomfort; how could it not resolve with a single bout of sweating?

Ginger-Pear Drink (Jiang Li Yin): Treats prolonged absence of sweating.
One large Pear (Li), one piece of Ginger (Sheng Jiang).
Pound together to extract juice, add one cup of Child's Urine (Tong Bian), stew over water and drink in one dose.

Sweating Prescription (Qu Han Fang): Take a piece of new blue cloth, soak it in cold water or Coptis Decoction (Huang Lian Shui), squeeze slightly dry, place on the chest for a long time. Replace when the cloth becomes hot. Within a short while, sweat should appear, or the patient may experience shaking chills followed by sweating and resolution. Use this method during extreme summer heat; use cautiously at other times. For all plague syndromes where heat is in the Upper and Middle Jiao, this can be used to clear heat and resolve toxicity. The pathogens resolve and sweat appears; it does not directly induce sweating.

Another Sweating Prescription:
Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu), Notopterygium Root (Qiang Huo), Alum (Bai Fan).
Equal parts, made into pills the size of a bullet using Ginger Juice (Sheng Jiang Zhi). Use one pill per dose. Men hold in the left hand, women in the right hand, tightly clenched against the anterior yin region. Then drink Scallion Soup (Cong Tang) to induce sweating.

Eye-Dotting Sweating Prescription (Dian Yan Qu Han Fang):
Borneol (Bing Pian, 1 fen), Calcined Alum (Ku Fan, 1 qian), Licorice Root (Fen Cao, 1.5 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Dip in "Rootless Water" (Wu Gen Shui - rainwater/snowmelt) and dot into the corners of the eyes. First, drink one or two bowls of boiling water. After dotting, grasp both shoulders tightly with hands, bend knees for a moment, and sweat will appear. After two or three applications, penetrating sweat indicates recovery.

Nasal-Clogging and Hand-Holding Sweating Prescription (Sai Bi Shou Wo Chu Han Fang): Delirium, grasping at bedclothes, appearance like a drunkard, resembling a monkey, hiccups, red eyes. Commonly called "Monkey Syndrome," actually it is Yang Toxin (Yang Du).
Musk (She Xiang, 3 fen), Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian, 3 fen), Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, 3 fen), Mylabris (Ban Mao, 1 fen).
Grind into fine powder, bind with Date Meat (Zao Rou) to form pills. Coat with 3 fen of Vermilion (Yin Zhu). Make two pills, wrap in silk. Insert one into the nose (men left, women right). Hold the other in the hand. Recovery occurs upon sweating.
Songfeng's Note: This is commonly known as Monkey Medicine. Although this name is not found in classics, careful study of the formula shows it cannot be entirely dismissed, thus it can achieve efficacy. Musk opens orifices; Coptis clears heat; Cinnabar expels evil; the toxicity of Mylabris attacks epidemic toxins; Dates harmonize Ying and Wei; Vermilion disperses. There is profound logic herein.

Scallion Head and Glutinous Rice Porridge (Cong Tou Jing Mi Zhou): Treats seasonal plague to induce sweating.
White Glutinous Rice (Jing Mi, one bowl), Scallion Heads (Cong Tou, twenty roots with hairs).
Add water and cook into porridge. Once boiled, drink while hot to induce sweating. (Do not use if already sweating.)

Western Sugar Hundred-Rescue Drink (Yang Tang Bai Jie Yin): Treats plague and Taiyang disease.
White Sugar (Bai Tang, 5 qian).
For Yin Syndromes, take with Scallion Soup. For Yang Syndromes, take with boiling water. For Summerheat Syndromes and Zhong Re/Zhong Shu (Summerheat refers to summer heat. Taiyang Summerheat is called Zhong Shu; symptoms include sweating, aversion to cold, fever, and thirst), take with fresh well water. For Deficiency Syndromes, take with Rice Soup. For Excess Syndromes, take with Tangerine Peel Soup (Chen Pi Tang). For Food Stagnation, take with Hawthorn Soup (Shan Zha Tang). For Jie Xiong, take with light salt water. For Hui Jue (roundworm convulsion), take with Osmunda Plum and Sichuan Pepper Soup. For tight sand abdominal pain, take with fresh well water. For Metrorrhagia, take with Pot Bottom Soot Soup (Guo Qi Mei Tang).

Gold in Palm (Zhang Zhong Jin): Treats Taiyang disease and plague, regardless of Yin/Yang, whether transmitted meridians or not.
Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu), Ginger (Jiang) (Use raw for plague, dried for Taiyang disease), Alum (Bai Fan, refined), Vermilion (Yin Zhu) (Not in original formula, added here).
Grind into powder in equal parts. First drink thick hot Mung Bean Soup. Then spread 5 fen of the powder in the palm (note: 5 fen is questionable). Clench tightly. Lie on side with legs tucked, cover with blanket to induce sweating.
At the initial stage of plague, pound several raw Scallion Whites (Cong Bai). Those who can drink alcohol, use Yellow Wine; those who cannot, use boiling water to mix and drink.

Dan-Fan Sweating Prescription (Dan Fan Qu Han Fang): Treats plague.
Lead Oxide (Huang Dan), Black Pepper (Hu Jiao), Alum (Bai Fan) (1 liang each), Hornet Nest (Ma Feng Wo, 5 qian).
Grind into powder. Pound Scallion into paste, shape by hand. Men apply to left side, women to right side, against the urethral opening. Effective for inducing sweating.

Peach Branch Bath Method (Tao Zhi Yu Fa): Treats initial contraction of plague with fever, aversion to cold, and anhidrosis. Take peach branches from the southeast, decoct in water, and bathe while hot.

Sweating Powder (Fa Han San): Treats all plague and Taiyang disease.
Realgar (Xiong Huang, 4 fen), Cinnabar (Chen Sha, 2 qian), Saltpeter (Huo Xiao, 4 fen), Musk (She Xiang, 1 fen), Gold Leaf (Jin Bo, 5 sheets).
Grind into extremely fine powder, store in a porcelain bottle, ensuring no gas escapes. In case of epidemic, dot the outer corner of the eye (men left, women right), cover with blanket, and sweat will appear.

Puji Wuwen Dan (Universal Rescue Five Plagues Pill): Specifically for dotting in Taiyang disease and plague. Dot both eye corners once with water-dipped medicine. If no sweat, dot again; sweat will surely appear.
Borneol (Bing Pian, 6 fen), Cow Bezoar (Niu Huang, 1 qian), Ephedra Stem (Ma Huang, 2.4 li), Amber (Hu Po, 1.5 li), Raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gan Cao, 3.5 qian).
Grind into fine powder, store in a porcelain bottle.

Another Sweating Prescription: At the beginning of plague (1-2 days), headache, high fever, full pulse. Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, 1 qian).
Decoct in 3 cups of water until 1 cup remains. Remove Cinnabar dregs and drink. Cover with blanket to induce sweating. Avoid blood-generating foods.

Another Prescription: Cinnabar powder, mixed with wine, applied all over the body. Sit facing fire; recovery occurs upon sweating.

Another Prescription: For headache, high fever, full pulse, decoct dried Mugwort Leaves (Ai Ye) in water and drink.

Another Prescription: Drink fresh Arctium Root Juice (Niu Bang Gen Zhi) on an empty stomach. Then take a handful of Mulberry Leaves (Sang Ye), roast them, decoct in water, and drink. If leaves are unavailable, use branches.

Another Prescription: For headache and high fever, take 1 cup of fresh Kudzu Root Juice (Ge Gen Zhi), 3 qian of Fermented Soybeans (Chi), and 1 cup of water. Decoct until 1 cup remains and drink. If there is vexation and heat, add Gardenia (Zhi Zi) 1-2 qian.

Another Prescription: For headache and vexatious heat, burn Soap Pod (Zao Jiao), grind into powder. Mix 2 qian of powder with 1 cup of fresh well water, a little Ginger Juice (Jiang Zhi), and Honey (Mi). First, bathe with hot water, then take the medicine to induce sweating.

Stopping Sweat Method (Zhi Han Fa): If plague causes continuous profuse sweating, immerse the body in a basin of water, leaving feet exposed, and cover lightly. Use Bran (Chao Fu), Glutinous Rice Flour (Nuomi Fen), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), and Oyster Shell (Mu Li). Grind into fine powder. Mix evenly and dust over the entire body. Sweat will stop naturally, preventing collapse of Yang.

Liao Wen Shen Ying Dan (Healing Plague Divine Response Pill) (Fastest for inducing plague sweat).
Sweat mud from a young adult's body, formed into seven pills the size of mung beans. Take with one slice of Ginger and seven centers of Yellow Wormwood (Huang Hao Xin), decocted in one cup of water. (One theory says use female sweat mud for male illness, male for female. Another says use only male sweat mud. Keep for reference.)
