Its symptoms include swelling of both cheeks, aversion to cold, and aversion to heat. Externally, use Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis) and Biota Leaf (Biota orientalis), pound them together into a paste, mix with water and vinegar, and apply as a poultice. Internally, decope Mint (Mentha haplocalyx) in strong concentration and drink the soup.
Its symptoms include stiffness of the throat and tongue, extending to the ears. Urgently needle the upper part of the throat, inserting seven needles horizontally and seven needles vertically. Take Cinnabar (Zhusha), in any amount, and grind it into powder. Mix one spoonful of Honey (Fengmi) with Baijiu (Chinese liquor) until uniform, and administer by force-feeding.
Its symptoms include lethargy and inability to eat. Burn Taro (Yutou) to ash while preserving its medicinal properties, grind into powder, and swallow with Yellow Rice Wine (Huangjiu).
Its symptoms include sore throat, fever, nausea, pain radiating to the cheeks, headache, lumps beside the throat, and scattered red filaments resembling crab claws. Use a needle to prick the "claws" on the tongue. It is crucial to prick the tips of the claws, not the tops. Prick each claw once to allow blood to flow out, then immediately apply Cinnabar powder to the area, and hold a small amount of vinegar in the mouth to swallow; this will lead to recovery. If the central top is pricked, it damages the "crab shell," leading to pus formation, inability to eat, and critical condition.
(If six purple-black nodules are scraped out, it is difficult to treat.)
The initial onset resembles Cold Damage (Shanghan) or febrile disease. After three to four days, lower abdominal distension occurs. Without treatment, death ensues within several days. Take a strand of hemp thread, as thick as a finger. First, scrape from both shoulders down to the wrists until purple-black nodules appear. Prick these nodules with a needle and squeeze out the foul blood. Then, scrape from both thigh roots down to the heels. If purple-black nodules appear, prick them and remove the foul blood. (For men, start on the left side first; for women, start on the right side first.) Scrape from the axillary fossa down to below the umbilicus, using the same needling method. Sweating immediately indicates recovery.
(This disease is also known as Jie Lei Wen [Knotting Rib Plague], which is severe. Without treatment, death occurs within several days.)
The symptom is solely pain in the hypochondriac region. Slice Radish (Luobo), dip in Baijiu, and scrape the painful area until Sha (sand-like rash) appears; recovery follows. If not recovered, take a large cup of Soybean Oil (Douyou), boil it in a copper spoon until reduced to one-third of the original volume, and drink it to cure. Another method: wrap Alum (Heifan) in blue cloth, dip in Baijiu, and perform scraping. Another method: bake a thick pancake made of Sesame Oil (Xiangyou), about the size of a bowl rim, and apply it hot to the painful area. Replace when cool. Three or four pancakes may be used. Discard the pancakes and do not eat them. Avoid raw and cold foods.
The symptoms include high fever, restlessness, and whole-body pain as if injured by insect stings. Commonly known as Mao Ci Wen [Mao-Sting Plague], it is treated as Sha disease. Lin Yuexi suffered from an epidemic disease with high fever, thirst, and chest/abdominal oppression. Palpation of the skin felt like pain from insect stings throughout the body. Therefore, Sha therapy was performed at the popliteal fossae with over twenty needles, causing toxic blood to flow profusely. He was prescribed Pangolin Scales (Shanjia), Bombyx Batryticatus (Tianchong), and Gleditsia Sinensis Thorn (Jiaoci), combined with herbs that invigorate blood and regulate qi. With slight intake, he recovered.
