Excessive joy causes the Heart Qi to disperse widely, with Yang floating on the exterior, leading to flaccidity and laxity of the meridians. Jianji Tang (Establishing the Ultimate Decoction) is the primary prescription.
Jianji Tang (Self-made Prescription)
Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix, 2 qian) Hu Po (Amber, 1 qian) Chen Sha (Cinnabar, 0.5 qian) Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 0.5 qian) Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 2 qian, stir-fried and crushed)
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 2 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1.5 qian, wine-fried) Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian) Bai Ren (Biota Semen, 2 qian)
Hong Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 10 pieces) Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices)
This formula is similar to those used for Heart Exhaustion (Xin Lao), utilizing Tian Dong, Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Dan Shen, and Bai Ren, but removing He Che Da Zhi (Placenta Hominis), Fu Shen, Yuan Zhi, and Lian Zi, while adding Hu Po, Chen Sha, Wu Wei Zi, Zao Ren, Jiang, and Hong Zao. The primary action lies in using Hu Po, Chen Sha, Ren Shen, and Dan Shen to calm and anchor the Shen (Spirit) and Heart; the secondary action involves using Huang Qi, Wu Wei Zi, Zao Ren, and Bai Shao to consolidate the exterior and astringe sweat. Since excessive joy causes the Shen to wander and sweat to leak, there is a possibility of sudden collapse. Sudden collapse due to extreme joy often occurs before medication can be administered; however, if the Shen is concentrated, the Qi gathers, and once the Qi gathers, collapse is avoided. Tian Dong nourishes Kidney Water to descend Fire; Dang Gui and Bai Ren nourish Heart Blood; Jiang and Hong Zao harmonize Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, thereby calming Heart Qi and enriching Heart Blood. When the Monarch (Heart) remains tranquil and non-actionable, supreme equilibrium is established. Note by Zu Yi.
Extreme anger leads to hypochondriac pain; extreme stagnation generates internal Fire, resulting in mental restlessness, irritability, stiffness and discomfort in the sinews and joints, and insomnia at night. Chonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction) is the primary prescription.
Chonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction)
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1.5 qian, wine-fried) Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 2 qian, stir-fried and crushed) Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus, 2 qian) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian)
Fu Shen (Poria Cum Radix, 2 qian) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian) Sha Yuan Ji Li (Astragali Complanati Semen, 3 qian) Hong Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 5 pieces) Ju Bing (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Conservatum, 4 qian)
Depressive anger injures the Liver, usually causing Liver Blood deficiency. This formula uses Zao Ren, Bai Shao, and Shan Yu Rou to astringe the Liver Body; Gan Cao and Hong Zao to moderate the Liver Function; Ren Shen, Fu Shen, and Zao Ren to calm the Heart; and Sha Yuan Ji Li and Shan Yu Rou to benefit the Kidneys. The Kidneys generate the Liver, and the Liver generates the Heart; the generating relationships are mutually attended to. Furthermore, Sha Yuan Ji Li and Ju Bing provide dispersion within tonification, ensuring that when Blood is abundant and Qi flows freely, Wood is pacified and Liver Qi is soothed. Since the Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul), how could insomnia persist? Note by Zu Yi.
