Excessive sorrow leads to a state of mental distraction and depression, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, and turbid phlegm-qi in the body. The *Xuancao Wangyou Decoction* (Daylily Forget-Sorrow Decoction) should be administered.
*Xuancao Wangyou Decoction* (Self-made Formula)
*Cassiae Ramulus* (Guizhi, 桂枝) - 5 fen
*Paeoniae Radix Alba* (Baishao, 白芍) - 1 qian 5 fen
*Licorice Root* (Gancao, 甘草) - 5 fen
*Turmeric Tuber* (Yujin, 郁金) - 2 qian
*Albizia Flower* (Hehuanhua, 合欢花) - 2 qian
*Aurantii Pericarpium* (Guangpi, 广皮) - 1 qian
*Pinellia Rhizoma* (Banxia, 半夏) - 1 qian
*Fritillaria Bulbus* (Beimu, 贝母) - 2 qian
*Poria* (Fushen, 茯神) - 2 qian
*Platycladi Seed* (Bairen, 柏仁) - 2 qian
*Hemerocallis Tuber* (Jinzhencai, 金针菜) - 1 liang (decocted separately to replace water for decocting other herbs)
This formula was formulated based on the inspiration from the *Shennong Bencao Jing* stating that "Albizia eliminates anger, and Daylily forgets sorrow," as well as insights from Ji Kang's *Yangsheng Lun* (Discourse on Nourishing Life). Furthermore, *Poria* and *Platycladi Seed* are used to nourish the Heart-Shen (Spirit); *Fritillaria Bulbus* and *Turmeric Tuber* to resolve depression; *Cassiae Ramulus*, *Paeoniae Radix Alba*, and *Licorice Root* to harmonize Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi; and *Aurantii Pericarpium* and *Pinellia Rhizoma* to promote Qi flow and resolve phlegm. Thus, all symptoms are addressed. Note by Zuyi.
Excessive rumination leads to restlessness and confusion, decreased appetite, mental fatigue, and lassitude of the four limbs. The *Yizhi Decoction* (Single-Mindedness Decoction) should be administered.
*Yizhi Decoction* (Self-made Formula)
*Ginseng Radix* (Renshen, 人参) - 2 qian
*Poria* (Fushen, 茯神) - 2 qian
*Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma* (Baizhu, 白术) - 1 qian 5 fen
*Licorice Root* (Gancao, 甘草) - 5 fen
*Astragali Radix* (Huangqi, 黄芪) - 2 qian
*Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit* (Yizhi, 益智) - 1 qian 5 fen
*Polygalae Radix* (Yuanzhi, 远志) - 5 fen
*Platycladi Seed* (Bairen, 柏仁) - 2 qian
*Aurantii Pericarpium* (Guangpi, 广皮) - 1 qian
*Amomi Fructus* (Muxiang, 木香) - 5 fen
*Jujube* (Dazao, 大枣) - 2 pieces
*Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens* (Jiang, 姜) - 3 slices
Does not the *Neijing* (Inner Canon) say? Excessive rumination causes the mind to dwell on one object and the Shen (Spirit) to return inward. Zheng Qi (Righteous Qi, here interpreted as Heart-Qi) remains attached and does not circulate, thus leading to Qi stagnation. In the manifestations of this formula, the pathology of Qi is heavier than that of Blood. Therefore, the method of *Guipi Tang* (Restore the Spleen Decoction) is adopted, but *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* (Danggui), *Ziziphi Spinosae Semen* (Suanzaoren), and *Longan Arillus* (Longyanrou) are removed and replaced with *Platycladi Seed*, *Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit*, and *Aurantii Pericarpium*. This follows the canonical text, focusing not on the deficiency of Heart-Blood, but on the stagnation of Heart-Qi. Through such modification, it presents a different therapeutic spirit, serving as an example of not being rigidly bound to ancient formulas. Note by Zuyi.
Sorrow causes Qi to rebel upward, leading to resentment and depression that fails to diffuse. Over time, this injures the Lung, preventing the descending function of its clear and pure nature. The *Modified Shensu Yin* (Modified Ginseng and Perilla Drink) should be administered.
*Modified Shensu Yin* (Self-made Formula)
*Ginseng Radix* (Renshen, 人参) - 2 qian
*Perillae Fructus* (Suzi, 苏子) - 2 qian
*Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum* (Chenxiang, 沉香) - 5 fen
*Morus Cortex* (Sangpi, 桑皮) - 3 qian
*Trichosanthis Pericarpium* (Loupi, 萎皮) - 3 qian
*Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum* (Juhong, 橘红) - 1 qian
*Pinellia Rhizoma* (Banxia, 半夏) - 1 qian
*Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix* (Danshen, 丹参) - 2 qian
*Platycladi Seed* (Baizi Ren, 柏子仁) - 2 qian
*Coicis Semen* (Yiren, 苡仁) - 5 qian
*Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens* (Jiang, 姜) - 2 slices
This formula emphasizes the canonical statement: "Sorrow makes the Heart-Tie (connection of the Heart) tense, the Lung leaves expand, and the Upper Jiao becomes blocked." Therefore, the prescription focuses primarily on protecting Qi and Blood and descending Phlegm-Qi. Note by Zuyi.
