When desires are unfulfilled, depression reaches its extreme and generates fire, resulting in symptoms of vexation, mental chaos, body heat, and restlessness. The primary treatment is Jieyu Hehuan Tang (Soothing Depression and Alleviating Agitation Decoction).
Jieyu Hehuan Tang (Self-made Formula)
Albiziae Flos (Hehuan Hua, 2 qian) Curcuma Aromatica Rhizoma (Yujin, 2 qian) Aquilaria Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang, 5 fen) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 2 qian) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 1 qian) Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen, 2 qian) Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen (Bairen, 2 qian) Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi, 1.5 qian) Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 1 qian) Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 1 qian) Poria (Fushen, 2 qian) Jujubae Fructus (Hongzao, 5 pieces) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Jubing, 4 qian)
This formula utilizes Chaihu, Danggui, Baishao, and Bohe, taking half the composition of Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), while removing Fuling, Baizhu, Gancao, and Wei Jiang (Ginger roasted with bran). Instead, it incorporates Hehuanhua, Yujin, Chenxiang, Shanzhi, and Jubing to soothe depression, regulate qi, clear liver fire, and thus "calm the stomach." Furthermore, Danshen, Bairen, Fushen, and Hongzao are used to nourish the Heart and Spleen and alleviate Liver tension, ensuring that both Jun Fire (Monarch Fire) and Xiang Fire (Minister Fire) remain tranquil, thereby bringing the Spleen and Stomach to a state of harmony. Only by distinguishing between Yu Huo (Depression-generated Fire) and Huo Dan Zhi Huo (Liver and Gallbladder Fire) can one understand the specific indications for each formula. Annotated by Zuyi.
Excessive indulgence in alcohol and sexual activity damages the Lower Yuan (Kidney Essence and Vital Qi), leading to weakness in the lower back and knees, body heat, and vexation. In severe cases, it may manifest as persistent erection without flaccidity (Qiang Yang Bu Wei). The primary treatment is Jiawei Sancai Tang (Modified Three Powers Decoction).
Jiawei Sancai Tang (Modified Three Powers Decoction)
Asparagi Radix (Tian Dong, 2 qian) Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Dihuang, 5 qian) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 2 qian) Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Guiban, 8 qian) Ligustri Lucidi Fructus (Nvzhenzi, 1 qian) Ecliptae Herba (Hanlian, 1 qian) Poria (Fuling, 2 qian) Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 2 qian) Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie, 1.5 qian) Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 1 qian) Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 2 qian) Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 1.5 qian) Jujubae Fructus (Hongzao, 5 pieces)
This formula combines Sancai Tang (Three Powers Decoction) with Erzhi Wan (Two Solstices Pill), adding Huangbai, Danpi, Fuling, and Zexie, thereby incorporating half the efficacy of Zhibai Dihuang Wan (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill) to strengthen the effect. Hongzao combined with Renshen mitigates the potential damage to Stomach Qi caused by bitter-cold herbs. Guiban, Duzhong, and Niuxi work together to subdue deficient Yang and guide deficient Fire downward, consolidating Kidney Qi. This facilitates the mutual interaction of Water and Fire (Heart-Kidney intersection), allowing pathogenic Fire to be stabilized and cease its reckless movement. Annotated by Zuyi.
