Deficient fire arises from irregular eating habits, overwork, and fatigue, which injure the righteous qi (vital energy). Yang qi sinks into the Yin, resulting in fever, mental fatigue, and reduced appetite. Dongyuan Li treated such syndromes with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), using Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) to raise and lift the Yang qi, while simultaneously tonifying the Spleen and harmonizing the Stomach. This precisely aligns with the principle in *Neijing* (The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine) that "deficiency is warmed by its qi." Thus, sweet-warm herbs can eliminate great heat, opening a major method for treating Yang deficiency. Unfortunately, those in the world who study Dongyuan's theories fail to distinguish between Yin/Yang and deficiency/excess. Even in cases of Yin deficiency with fever or upper excess and lower deficiency, they indiscriminately use Shengma and Chaihu, bringing disaster upon themselves swiftly. Therefore, I formulated Hezhong Yangwei Tang (Harmonize the Middle and Nourish the Stomach Decoction) to clarify that those who revere Dongyuan should learn his intent rather than merely imitating his methods.
Hezhong Yangwei Tang (Self-formulated)
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 2 qian)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian)
Fuling (Poria, 2 qian)
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian)
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian)
Daodou (Phaseoli Semen, 4 qian)
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian)
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 1 qian)
Guangchenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian)
Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 1 qian)
Yiren (Coicis Semen, 4 qian)
Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces)
Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices)
This formula is essentially Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), with Shengma removed and replaced by Bohe, incorporating the concept of Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Fuling is added to harmonize the Spleen, Daodou to calm the Kidney, and Sharen and Yiren to harmonize the Middle Jiao and transform dampness. It raises while descending, avoiding the Lower Jiao; it employs Dongyuan's intent without being bound by his specific methods, showing considerable ingenuity in formulation. (Annotated by Zuyi)
Dry fire is caused by blood deficiency. Blood nourishes Qi, preventing Qi from moving recklessly, thereby maintaining Yin-Yang balance. Once Ying-Blood (Nutritive Blood) is deficient, internal nourishment is lost, leading to dryness in all Zang-Fu organs, and fire arises accordingly. This causes hair loss, withered skin, body heat, and dry throat. Xueru Tang (Snow Milk Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Xueru Tang (Snow Milk Decoction, Self-formulated)
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 3 qian)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1.5 qian)
Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 qian)
Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1.5 qian)
Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3 qian)
Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 0.5 qian)
Tian dong (Asparagi Radix, 1.5 qian)
Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 4 qian)
Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 3 qian)
Renru (Human Milk, one large cup)
Ou zhi (Nelumbinis Nelumbo Rhizoma Juice, one large cup)
Decoct with two zhong of water and take orally.
When blood fails to nourish Qi, Qi cannot transform fluids, leading to dryness in all Zang-Fu organs, scorched Earth, and dried-up Water. Shengdi, Shudi, Tian dong, Maidong, Yuzhu, Shanyao, Danggui, and Baishao are excellent for nourishing blood and strengthening Water. The formula is named Snow Milk because it uses human milk and lotus root juice, providing extreme moistening. Furthermore, the astringent property of Wuweizi is used to consolidate and gather. This combines Gu Ben Tang (Solidify the Root Decoction) and Sheng Mai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) into one formula. Beyond addressing Lung dryness and Lung fire, it demonstrates unique insight and divine skill. (Annotated by Zuyi)
