Yang Qi gathers in the head; therefore, the face is "Yang within Yang." The nose is located in the center of the face, and the Yangming Meridian (Stomach Channel) originates near the nose. When blood circulates throughout the body to reach the face and nose, it becomes extremely pure and refined blood. Wine has a nature that promotes circulation and tends to ascend; it is intensely hot and possesses severe, urgent toxicity. In people who drink excessively, wine fumes steam the face and nose, making the blood reaching these areas extremely hot. When this hot blood encounters cold, it is constrained by Yin Qi, leading to turbid coagulation and stagnation. Consequently, the color naturally turns purple first, then black. Treatment must employ methods to resolve stagnant blood to restore flow and generate new blood for transformation; only then can the disease be cured. I prepared Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) processed with wine, adding stir-fried Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Jiu Honghua (Carthami Flos processed with wine). It was decocted with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and taken with Wulingzhi powder (Trogopterori Faeces). For those with weak Qi, Jiuhuangqi (Astragali Radix processed with wine) was added. There were no failures in efficacy.
Yang imparts essence, and Yin undergoes transformation, thereby forming conception. If Blood and Qi are deficient and insufficient to nourish the fetus, spontaneous abortion occurs. Alternatively, labor or anger may injure the emotions, causing internal Fire to flare up, which can also lead to miscarriage. Tracing the root cause, all stem from Heat. Fire consumes matter, which is the natural law of creation. However, *Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases) attributes miscarriage to Wind-Cold injuring the Zi Zang (Uterus); this fails to grasp the true nature of the condition.
I observed a woman surnamed Jia who invariably suffered miscarriage around three months of gestation. Her pulse was large and powerless on the left side, and choppy upon heavy pressure, indicating Blood deficiency. Since she was young, I solely tonified Middle Qi to allow Blood to naturally flourish. At that time, it was early summer. I instructed her to take one Qian of Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) powder with strongly brewed Baizhu Tang (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Decoction). After taking thirty to forty doses, she successfully carried the pregnancy to term. Reflecting on this, miscarriages due to internal Heat combined with deficiency are logically more common. Regarding Heat and Deficiency, their severity must be distinguished. Physicians dedicated to preserving life should not overlook this.
Difficult labor often occurs in individuals who are depressed and sedentary, typically those from wealthy families living in luxury. It is rarely seen among the poor and hardworking. Medical texts only mention "Shoutai Yin" (Fetus-Thinning Drink), but this formula was created for Princess Huyang and is indeed not the ultimate solution. Why? Even with this formula, difficult labor persists. My clan sister suffered greatly from difficult labor; upon subsequent pregnancies, she would terminate them, which deeply pitied me. Observing that she was obese yet diligent in needlework, after pondering for ten days, I suddenly realized: This situation is exactly opposite to that of Princess Huyang. Those living in luxury have solid Qi; consuming excess Qi to bring it to balance facilitates easy delivery. Now, seeing her obesity indicates Qi deficiency; prolonged sitting indicates stagnant Qi movement, further weakening Qi. Prolonged sitting causes the fetus to fail to descend because the mother's Qi cannot propel it. One must tonify the mother's Qi so the child becomes robust and delivery is easy. When she was five to six months pregnant, I modified Zisu Yin (Perillae Decoction) from *Daquan Fang* by adding Qi-tonifying herbs and administered over ten doses. She subsequently delivered a healthy boy with great relief. Thereafter, I adjusted this formula based on each mother's physique, appearance, temperament, and seasonal changes, achieving consistent success. Thus, I named the formula "Da Dasheng San" (Great Facilitator of Birth Powder).
