A pulse that is fine, deep, and rapid indicates the disease is in the interior; sweating therapy should not be used.
If the pulse is faint (Wei), sweating therapy should not be used. If the Cun Kou pulse at the Chi position is faint, weak, and choppy, purgative therapy should not be used.
Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction).
If the body feels heavy, add Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma); this is to overcome dampness.
If the body feels light, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma); this is to overcome heat.
Diagram of Anterior-Posterior Deficiency and Excess
Suppose the Spleen and Lung are deficient, then tonify their Mother organ. That is, when there is a Lung disease, tonify the Spleen, so that the Kidney will naturally become balanced. Suppose the Spleen and Lung are in an excess state, then drain their Child organ. That is, when there is a Spleen disease, drain the Lung, so that the Heart will naturally become balanced. The Nan Jing (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: What comes from the Mother is Excess Evil (Shi Xie); what comes from the Child is Deficiency Evil (Xu Xie); what comes from the organ that does not overcome me (Ke Wo) is Robber Evil (Ze Xie); what comes from the organ that I overcome (Wo Ke) is Minor Evil (Wei Xie); what arises from the organ's own pathology is Correct Evil (Zheng Xie).
Suppose Heart disease is caused by Wind Strike, it is Deficiency Evil; caused by Summerheat Injury, it is Correct Evil; caused by dietary irregularities and fatigue, it is Excess Evil; caused by Cold Damage, it is Minor Evil; caused by Dampness Invasion, it is Robber Evil.
Suppose Heart disease presents with a Spleen pulse. Earth resides in the Fire sector. The Water that overcomes Fire retreats and dares not arrive; Fire alone flares up in the South. This is "what comes from before," constituting Excess Evil.
Suppose Heart disease presents with a Liver pulse. Wood resides in the Fire sector. Earth retreats and dares not arrive; since Earth does not arrive, the Water that overcomes Fire, following Wood, arrives. This is "what comes from after," constituting Deficiency Evil.
Suppose the Spleen and Lung are deficient. The Spleen (Mother) can cause the Lung (Child) to be deficient. Use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction); this is not directly tonifying the Spleen, but rather tonifying the Lung within the Spleen. Thus it is said, "When deficient, tonify the Mother," because the Spleen is the root that generates the Lung. Therefore, use herbs such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). The Great Classic states: "To nourish the seedling, one must surely consolidate the root." This refers to this principle.
Suppose the Spleen and Lung are in an excess state. The Lung (Child) can cause the Spleen (Mother) to be in excess. Use Xiehuang San (Drain Yellow Powder); this is not directly draining the Spleen, but rather draining the Lung within the Spleen. Thus it is said, "When in excess, drain the Child," because the Spleen is the upper source that generates the Lung. Therefore, use herbs such as Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum). The Great Classic states: "To cut down below, one must surely wither above." This refers to this principle.
