（-）寒类药性赋
考其诸药，此类最寒。
天门冬止嗽而清肺肝之火。灯心草清心而止小便之淋。
黄竹根疗黄疸。鱼腥草清暑热。
白槿花治伤咳而除肺痈。薄荷叶清暑气亦可治咳。
坑珠根快膈，健脾，又能除湿消毒。
干葛根止渴，散寒，叶消无名肿毒。
称管柴快膈，理头晕又解三焦火。毛茶根止渴，利水肿，而破淤血滞。
黄荆条除热去脾寒而疗泄泻。瓠丝草去风，退肺热亦治天吊。
欲清火，敛肺而除咳，须用桑白皮。要去胀，止泻以开膈，必资田括根。
菊花心消肿毒而治咳嗽，溪边祥泻脾火可消肿毒。
白杜子除胀，小便能利。金银花止泻，飞扬可疗。
金线芦退寒，治小儿之惊。猪母香祛风，除外热之肿。
甜茶根清肝火，止吐血，性同扁柏叶之效。
苏叶子利水肿，祛疳疟，无异花苋草之功
也闻知苦荠花健胃，止泻，用叶以塞鼻衄。生毛草消胀，除热，取藤以治惊风。
满天星利大小便，以定惊风之热。观音柴通大小肠，而清无根之火。
白扁竹去疳，杀虫，又利小便。光面草降泻，消肿，亦去疳积。
阑机心清火，烧灰冲酒可治血崩。芒柴根化肺痰，捣叶调汤能疗崩漏。
利大小便，用乎荜解。祛痰去惊，宜乎蠊蜊。
尝闻土茯健苓脾胃，疮疥能除。绿竹心，清心脾惊风可定。
夜合草治秃气，除热而化痰滞。
白半脚消虚肿，利水而通乳窍。
桃寄奴疗吐泻，兼润口渴。山黄连去心火，并医疥疮。
治蛇头之毒,兼乎齿痛,当用苦参根和茶叶根。
除溃疡之痛,并疗瘰疬,宜使夏枯草与鸡吟花。
解脾热,安胎气,除吐秽,使用竹茹。清心火,治吐血,疗伤寒,要取茅根。
金线草镇惊风,催胎,用以酒。扁蓄草去疳积,杀虫,调以糖。
枝子根清肺热而去黄疸,梨柴根解心火而医痢疾。
枇杷叶治逆气以安胎。山半夏治喉痛而化痰。
马蒙根清心去胸膈之痰,用皮藤解毒去疳积之痛。
乃香椒治心痛而截湿疟,老鼠屎除惊风而解信毒。
顺气藤治气急,兼除肺火与肋痛。淡竹叶解虚烦,并退皮热与口干。
芦竹根治咽痛又利血淋,剥皮藤治惊风更疗骨风。
满山百理伤咳,止吐血,可以顺气。天竹根清心火,解诸毒,尤疏风热。
鸡肠草消肿毒,能破淤血。芭蕉头润舌干,可下胞胎;
旧棕灰治吐血，功同破蒲扇;石芥菜防产风,无异黄大嫂。
刺菠茶祛风寒而止咳血,灯台草清肺火而固血崩。
黄柏柴清心热,以除三焦火。长老子平肝风,用疗外疮之毒。
水枧子治肺痈而解骨蒸。蚌蛤草催胎产而开交骨。
蝉退壳去惊风且治目翳,鸡骨柴治伤寒又防产风。
羊蹄菜敷肿毒可消而除疥疮之痒;白茄根治乳痛可止兼洗阴户之肿。
谷精草除目翳，亦可疗白浊。金锁匙治疥疮,更可医蛇伤。
虎耳草疗产后之风。米碎兰止衄鼻之火。
木犀树治腹痛而止泻泄,车前子能明目而利小便。
栝楼根除毒,止渴,且疗咳痰。大禾箭补气,益血,而通心窍。
桕树皮止腹痛，开降气郁。乌抛茶泻肝火,消退眼肿。
治烫伤宜用六月雪。止牙血当使蛇菠。
治小儿口中白点,取乎屏风蕊。疗婴孩口生马牙,用于杉树菰。
乃小青除心火而治口疮与咳伤。京岩草退肝热而疗头疮与惊风。
光桐根以通便,水雍菜除信毒。
冬瓜皮清心火,其子润肺。厚藤根治肋痛,其子顺气。
止吐血用金墨,治泻痢使苦朱。
疗疥疮利水胀,用以蕉叶。退皮热,治痢疾,使以仙草。
车屎帝降泻,可使妇女下胎。酸醋草除热,可定小儿惊风。
从知螺丕草泻肺，开音,而治伤咳。白扁豆清心,止咳而疗逆气。
山乌豆根除胀,健脾,而能补血。白鸡冠花镇惊,止带,可疗痔疮。
穿山甲治冷瘼与唇肿。燕子泥镇小儿之惊风。
黄沙藤祛风而去痧。苦马菜止痛而消肿。
金茶匙散风痰而消惊热之烦。蚯蚓屎滋舌燥,有显耳脓之效。
山生地润肺,滋肾,而治干咳。蕉根叶消肿,治疮,能疗猪瘟。
此百十六种药性之寒而取治焉。
(二) 热类药性赋
药有温热,识宜忝详。
欲温中暖胃用筚拨。要发散风寒使老姜。
一撮针止咳可散寒。山查根行血能止泻。
铁钥匙最解表而驱寒。石楠藤治腰痛亦能发汗。
马屎条去脾胀,疗黄疸,治冷何难。牛舌草消湿疟,治骨疼,健脾尤效。
红髻子止咳嗽，治膨胀以暖血。石步落敛肺阴，医咳嗽于伤寒。
牛膝根利水，行血，理脚气，以助筋骨。
京桔子利水，散寒，消膨胀，兼疗黄疸。
欲发散，去肺风，用以苏叶。要下气，除胁痛，使以苏子。
小樟子驱表寒，并去气痛。凉伞子解寒毒，亦除喉肿。
治僵尸之伤寒，虚资铁甲柴与硬药根。除疳积之泻痢，必用白杨梅与白艾仔。
乌猴柿治疳积之痢，川山龙祛心痛之寒。
柑桔子益脾，能疗肢节之痛。虎头蕉下胎，有破淤血之功。
山靛根去风寒，除咳而利水，且止风痛。
吴茱萸温丹田，止痛而化痰，兼治胀满。
过墙风疗内伤，用酒能除小便之肿。抱子柴开胸膈，用叶可解内部之伤。
紫浮萍发表汗，且治腹痛。肉抛皮利小便，而去水肿。
荆芥去风，加根以治热淋。大甲和肝，并叶可除胁痛。
大叶婆治硬尸之伤寒，能滋血以减痛。乌芹菜婆妇人之淤血，可祛风以调气。
石菖蒲开心窍，解气郁而化痰。羊带铃治肺痈，化脓血而疗骨痛。
治黄疸，医背痈,莫如黄菠茶根。疗身痛，除骨楚,可用黄花仔草。
退虚肿，而攻风利水,全取山南京苋。消盅胀,而破血下胎,独用两头根草。
乌蕨草治两肋及腰膝之痛。梅子兆疗血淋并产后之风。
虾瘼子化风痰应冲家酿之酒。朴地钟止咳嗽须加鸭母之肉。
山柴胡疏肝疗脾肿而去寒热。绿毒草利水除虚胀而疗产风。
山膏药清暑气,涩精,而治头痛。剑刀草治吐血,消肿,解毒而疗血淋。
假死柴除内伤,其叶可医头目眩。胡瓜根治疟疾,其子能疗胁肋痛。
矮脚茶治疥疮,有止咳嗽之功。五色草疗乳疮,能治血崩之效。
红花儿和血散气而除寒。竹蓖草除痛止泻兼温中。
土灶鸡化痰诞,祛风寒,又能下气。威灵仙除脾冷，治心痛,更能利水。
椿树根利风湿,能杀虫,血崩所需。一枝花除咳嗽，能暖血,产妇可用。
栽田菠温脾，能去淤以生新。乌药子疏肝，能顺气而止泻。
要去伤用天辣根。治骨痛使红骨子。
驱骨节之风痛,山荔枝根先而金猫头次之。
攻闭经之淤血,参三七根缓而漆柴根较速。
月月红调月经之先后。阑班根治骨节之疼痛。
乳汁草除寒有接骨之能。针冬花治咳起脾极之效。
瑞仙根治咳，利水肿而腰痛可用。
地杨梅下胎，止伤痛而目翳堪疗。
毛桃根治手指之肿毒,夜下珠疗小产之血崩。
斑鸠菠能发汗以退热,鸡肫皮可消食以健胃。
天地吉配烧酒,以治胁痛。胡椒草除心痛，又疗目翳。
治跌伤,消骨肿，资以赤括。治腹痛，消暑气，用乎香薷。
治心疼，化冷痰,当以香儿油。扶腰软，止心痛,宜以老虎刺。
樟柴片去风,除肿而治心疼。鬼灯笼去毒，医疮而祛风热。
狗脚迹退水肿,能除目翳。棕树根下死胎,可医白浊。
猪母藤治痢殊验。仁和菜降气如神。
鞑苎根除疟疾。桃树叶治头痛。
染旦草能祛寒，有生血之效。香葱根通心窍,有补肾之功。
马鞭草破血，下胎而疗心腹之痛。过山兆消风,顺气而除脾极之疟。
花椒根治心痛,去湿,能消水肿。
此九十五种药性之热而点识之。
(三) 温类药性赋
品药性温,此录存焉。
山人参补气而健脾;金樱子益肾而固精。
半盐碱除肺风,能止咳而化痰。野菊花生新血,除痛以去风。
金石榴散风寒,健脾而止泻。骨碎补疗折伤,滋肾而除痛。
利缺草散寒而止泻。溪笼葱去黄而补肾。
黄花金龟去瘀生新，止咳堪嘉。羊不食草调血补肾,通窍尤良。
野木槿治肺痈,破淤,且医吐脓之病。山蜈蚣疗班蛇,除风,能破产后之淤。
去脾寒用乎地罗汉,疗虚泻宜使地茄根。
欲安胎,利关节,须乎艾梗。疗肋痛，止吐泻,用乎柿蒂。
红曲子根疗蛇头之毒。过路蜈蚣治水湿之泻。
野席草去湿，健脾，能治黄疸。赤曲子消胀,止泻,可医水肿。
椿芽根除冷疟，用涩遗精。告化碗除郁气,以除腹痛。
尉斗草治水泻要调酒。山茄根除风泻要用根。
铁线藤除胁痛，疗疝，而黄疸能医。松树菰去隔日之疟,而吐血能止。
鸡脚迹祛风止痢,可疗血崩。馒头子治牙关闭,能消咽肿。
山香附散气郁而补血。铁马鞭治痢止痛而发表。
疗伤咳润肺用大头,定惊风破淤使钩藤。
除骨蒸，补肾何首乌有准。治头风，安胎野苎麻无疑。
紫金藤治腹痛止泻而痢疾堪疗。糖蜂藤逐风滋肾而脱肛可治。
蓖麻子能下不活之胎及胎衣不下。铁牛贯能解痰痈之急并内伤咳嗽。
山黄精补肾而安神。瓜子金除咳而益肾。
疗乳肿之毒,用乎蒲公英。消喉中之哦,当使乌不采。
若乎柿树兆祛寒,能除肢节之肿痛。四贴金驱毒，亦治闭滞之血痞。
山荞麦散寒，除外肿之毒。珍珠宝治风,消盅胀之形。
千人扯能提大肠之脱。铁梧桐能消脾极之患。
鸭雄草补脾虚而消疳积。木解根养肺阴而益脾胃。
欲除咳利水,当以山岩珠。治产后寒淤,用以沙糖子。
除腹痛去淤血,益母草如神。破淤血消风热,禾杀子甚验。
猎扎衣治横产而下胞衣。香橼根消脾极而除痞气。
山蓼草消腹胀。五爪龙治血崩。
旧桔皮化咳痰，定风柴止腰痛。
标柴根可治产后之寒热。槟枫柴能疗病后之膝痛。
老鸦草治血淋而疗脱肛。杉木芯利水湿而治白带。
锅盖炭研末，能治心痛。水柳花捣敷可医飞疡。
此六十六种温药之性随症详审,施治可也。
(四) 平类药性赋
药有平和，医家当忆。
茱利子健脾而疗崩漏。牛乳根滋肾而止咳嗽。
屏枫树平肝肺之火。趋眉草止水湿之泻。
豆荚子去疳积,而镇小儿之惊。老鸦半治寒热而疗悲脊之痈毒。
桃仁破血宽肠,亦治头痛。百合清肺除咳,能疗脱肛。
山砂仁去胀温胃，兼能安胎。山甘草清热解毒,更可和药。
泻肝火，去目翳,宜用木贼。宽胸膈,消胀气,可使青皮。
风草子清热解毒,而治小儿惊风。薏米根健脾化痰，能疗肺痈脓血。
此十四味平和之药择而用之。
综上青草诸药,共为二百九十一种,均系前人流传,性有寒热温平,端赖后人审慎择用可耳。

寒性药赋
医始歧黄,药从百草，虽各家之备载非成赋而难明,诸药赋性,首类为寒。
观音竹行血清金,佛甲草解毒退肿。
六月霜止痉定惊,还治肺热咳血。
五路白解毒化湿,更疗流火痛风。
铁凉伞鹅尾珠利咽平肝,金甘精鹤舌草利尿泻肺。
润肺去痰兮有石莲花,而定喘还有盆鱼草。
平肝活络兮有蓬莱竹,而清血则用佛桑花。
有刺拦路虎解毒杀菌,倒挂仙人掌消肿定痛。
闻之昙花平木清金,律草健胃益气。
冬瓜苦瓜能利水而解烦渴,紫参苦参会清血而用驱虫。
海通偏中之宜,扁蓄通淋之力
白布沙清金而止咳血,黄天竺泻木又会舒筋。
贯众清肠胃止崩带又化骨鲠,
漏芦平肝肺祛风湿兼通乳痈。
降魔杵散气避温,仙人掌消肿去淤。
又有凤尾草对咳血有功,鸡冠花止痛痢多效。
菠菱菜根通肠胃而解酒毒,水芙蓉花清肺肝且消毒肿。
鸡舌草虾瘼草解毒通淋,虎耳草猕猴桃凉肾清暑。
野青仔清凉,杨柳根行水。
入肝胆化瘀结多用白毛藤,通三焦利风湿更以紫竹菜。
水浮莲消肿排脓,白茶花凉胃止血。
安海豆爿草止呕血更治晕眩,
四川金钱草止咯血又医咳嗽。
还有仙钻草强心,人竹草平木。
黄花草解毒杀虫,白毛串更能消肿。
肖山虎通经散结,水仙花只用消痈。
疗只治癣有野萝菔,清暑疏风用风不动。
山豆仔宁嗽治热痢可能,上己菜明目利诸淋尤善。
野苎疗丹毒,梓根治热淋。
又如双龙须活血利水,七姐妹行气排脓。
白花刺刺蓉通利关节,白花风不动活血舒筋。
芭蕉根解热毒兼清胃火,螺丕草疗水肿更治创伤。
白石薯除疔疮痈疖,龙舌草清咽喉积疳。
鲜地榆止敛,鲜地骨清凉,山黄花清解,土黄柏泻热。
玉詹花解诸毒又下骨鲠之能,复老草消风肿兼除黄疸之效。
芦笋根泻肺热喘促,白藓皮除风湿痹麻。
是以马齿苋润肠胃,狗尾草泄膀胱热。
盆莲散瘀,黄毒去痰。
天芥菜解毒,天门冬滋肾。
西瓜皮,黄瓜皮,凉肺胃又疗黄疸;
白茅根，鲜芦根,清肝肺并止呕逆。
蒉草头化痰利尿,丝瓜根解毒透疮。
土梅花生津止渴,解暑除烦,而土银花解毒。
白桦菜除风祛痹,消毒截疟,而白竹菜利湿。
又如桑树根逐风,豆爿草化痰。

Huangzhugen (Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens root) treats jaundice. Yuxingcao (Houttuyniae Herba) clears summer-heat.
Baijinhua (Hibisci Mutabilis Flower) treats trauma-induced cough and eliminates lung abscess. Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium) clears summer-heat and can also treat cough.
Kengzhugen (likely a local name, possibly related to Dioscorea or similar rhizomes) promotes digestion, strengthens the Spleen, and removes dampness and detoxifies.
Gangen (Puerariae Radix) stops thirst, disperses cold; its leaves eliminate unnamed swellings and toxins.
Changuanchai (likely a local name) promotes digestion, regulates dizziness, and resolves Triple Burner fire. Maochaegen (Camellia sinensis root) stops thirst, promotes diuresis for edema, and breaks blood stasis stagnation.
Huangjingtiao (Vitex negundo var. heterophylla twig) removes heat, dispels Spleen cold, and treats diarrhea. Husicao (Cucurbitaceae vine) dispels wind, reduces Lung heat, and treats Tian Diao (infantile convulsion).
To clear fire, astringe the Lung, and remove cough, Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) must be used. To remove distension, stop diarrhea, and open the diaphragm, Tiankuogen (likely a local name) is essential.
Juhua Xin (Chrysanthemum center) reduces swelling and toxins and treats cough; Xibian Xiangxie (local herb) clears Spleen fire and reduces swelling and toxins.
Baiduzi (Euonymus seed) removes distension and promotes urination. Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) stops diarrhea; Feiyangcao (Commelinae Herba) can treat it.
Jinxianlu (Ardisia japonica) dispels cold and treats infantile convulsions. Zhimumaxiang (likely a local aromatic herb) dispels wind and eliminates swelling caused by external heat.
Tianchagen (Euphorbia humifusa root) clears Liver fire and stops hematemesis; its efficacy is similar to Bianbaiye (Platycladi Cacumen).
Suyezi (Perillae Folium) promotes diuresis for edema, dispels malnutrition malaria, with no difference in merit from Huaxiancao (Alternanthera philoxeroides).
It is known that Kuqihua (Capsella bursa-pastoris flower) strengthens the stomach, stops diarrhea, and its leaves stuffed in the nose stop epistaxis. Shengmaocao (local herb) reduces distension, removes heat, and its vines treat convulsions.
Man Tianxing (Aster tataricus or similar) promotes urination and defecation, settling the heat of convulsions. Guanyinchai (local herb) unblocks the Large and Small Intestines and clears rootless fire.
Baibianzhu (Dioscorea opposita rhizome) removes malnutrition, kills parasites, and promotes urination. Guangmiancao (local herb) purges downward, reduces swelling, and removes malnutrition accumulation.
Lanjixin (local herb) clears fire; burnt to ash and taken with wine, it treats metrorrhagia. Mangchaigen (local herb) transforms Lung phlegm; mashed leaves mixed with soup treat uterine bleeding.
To promote urination and defecation, use Biejie (likely Piper kadsura or similar). To resolve phlegm and settle fright, use Lianli (likely a mollusk or insect remedy).
It has been heard that Tufuling (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma) strengthens the Spleen and Stomach and removes sores and scabies. Lvzhuxin (Bamboo pith) clears Heart and Spleen and settles convulsions.
Yehecao (Albiziae Coria) treats alopecia, removes heat, and transforms phlegm stagnation.
Banjiao (likely a local herb) reduces deficiency swelling, promotes water metabolism, and opens milk ducts.
Taoniju (likely a local herb) treats vomiting and diarrhea and moistens dry mouth. Shanhuanglian (Coptis chinensis or similar) clears Heart fire and treats scabies.
To treat snakehead carbuncle toxicity and toothache, use Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) root and Chayegen (Camellia sinensis root).
To relieve ulcer pain and treat scrofula, use Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica) and Jiyinghua (local flower).
To resolve Spleen heat, calm fetal Qi, and expel vomitus, use Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). To clear Heart fire, treat hematemesis, and cure typhoid, take Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma).
Jinxiancao (Ardisia japonica) calms convulsions and induces labor, taken with wine. Bianxu (Polygoni Avicularis Herba) removes malnutrition accumulation and kills parasites, mixed with sugar.
Zhigen (Gardeniae Fructus) root clears Lung heat and removes jaundice; Licai (likely a local herb) root resolves Heart fire and treats dysentery.
Pipaye (Eriobotryae Folium) directs rebellious Qi downward to calm the fetus. Shanbanxia (Pinellia ternata or similar) treats sore throat and transforms phlegm.
Mamengen (likely a local herb) clears Heart fire and removes chest/phrenic phlegm; using its bark/vine detoxifies and removes malnutrition pain.

Jichangcao (Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides) reduces swelling and toxins and breaks blood stasis. Bajiaotou (Musa basjoo stem base) moistens dry tongue and can expel the placenta.
Jiu Zonghui (Brown palm ash) treats hematemesis, with efficacy equal to Popusan; Shijieshi (Stone mustard greens?) prevents postpartum wind, equivalent to Huang Dasao.
Cibo Cha (Thelypteris palustris or similar tea) dispels wind-cold and stops coughing blood; Dengtaicao (local herb) clears Lung fire and secures metrorrhagia.
Huangbochai (Phellodendri Cortex) clears Heart heat and removes Triple Burner fire. Zhanglaozi (likely a local herb) pacifies Liver wind and treats external sore toxins.
Shuijianzi (Saposhnikoviae Radix or similar) treats lung abscess and resolves bone-steaming fever. Bangha Cao (likely a local herb) induces labor and opens the crossing bones.
Chantuikqiao (Cicada slough) removes convulsions and treats leukoma; Jigucai (local herb) treats typhoid and prevents postpartum wind.
Yangticai (Rumex crispus) applied to swollen toxins reduces them and relieves scabies itching; Baiqiegen (Solanum melongena root) stops breast pain and washes vulvar swelling.
Gujingcao (Evodiae Fructus or similar) removes leukoma and treats turbid urine. Jin Suoshi (Acanthopanacis Sinensis Radix) treats scabies and further cures snake bites.
Hu'ercao (Saxifraga stolonifera) treats postpartum wind. Misulan (likely a local herb) stops nasal bleeding fire.
Muxi Shu (Osmanthus fragrans tree) treats abdominal pain and stops diarrhea; Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) brightens eyes and promotes urination.
Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) removes toxins, stops thirst, and treats cough-phlegm. Dahejian (likely a local herb) tonifies Qi, benefits Blood, and opens the Heart orifices.
Jiupishu (Toona sinensis bark) stops abdominal pain and descends stagnant Qi. Wupaocha (likely a local herb) purges Liver fire and reduces eye swelling.
For burns, use Liuyue Xue (Snow under Six Months). For dental bleeding, use Shebo (likely a local herb).
For white spots in children's mouths, use Pingfengrui (Screen flower stamen). For horse teeth in infants, use Shanshugu (Fir cone).
Xiaoqing (Local herb) removes Heart fire and treats mouth ulcers and cough injury. Jingyancao (Local herb) reduces Liver heat and treats head sores and convulsions.
Guangtonggen (Paulownia root) unblocks bowels; Shuiyongcai (Water spinach) removes poison.
Dongguapi (Winter melon peel) clears Heart fire; its seeds moisten the Lung. Houtenggen (local vine) treats rib pain; its seeds regulate Qi.
To stop hematemesis, use Jinmo (Gold ink?); to treat dysentery, use Kuzhu (Bitter Zhu?).

Shanwudou (Black Soybean) root removes distension, strengthens the Spleen, and nourishes Blood. Bai Jiguan Hua (White Cockscomb) calms fright, stops leukorrhea, and treats hemorrhoids.
Shanjiapia (Pangolin scales) treats cold malaria and lip swelling. Yanzini (Swallow mud) calms infantile convulsions.
Huangsateng (Yellow sand vine) dispels wind and removes sha. Kumasai (Bitter horse vegetable) stops pain and reduces swelling.
Jinchachi (Golden tea spoon) disperses wind-phlegm and eliminates restlessness from fright-heat. Qiu Yinshi (Earthworm feces) moistens dry tongue and effectively treats otitis media with pus.
Shanshengdi (Wild Rehmannia) moistens the Lung, nourishes the Kidney, and treats dry cough. Jiaogenye (Banana root/leaf) reduces swelling, treats sores, and cures swine plague.
These one hundred and sixteen cold-natured herbs are thus selected for treatment.
(II) Ode to Heat-Natured Herbs
Herbs have warm and hot properties; recognition should be detailed.
To warm the middle and warm the Stomach, use Bibo (Long Pepper Fruit). To disperse wind-cold, use Laojiang (Old Ginger).
Yicuo Zhen (One Pinch Needle) stops cough and disperses cold. Shanchagen (Hawthorn root) moves Blood and stops diarrhea.
Tieyaoshi (Iron Key) best releases the exterior and drives out cold. Shinanteng (Fatsia scandens vine) treats lower back pain and induces sweating.
Mashitiao (Horse dung twig) removes Spleen distension, treats jaundice, and curing cold is easy. Niushetcao (Cow tongue herb) eliminates damp malaria, treats bone pain, and is particularly effective for strengthening the Spleen.
Hongjizi (Red bun) stops coughing, treats distension, and warms the Blood. Shibuluo (Stone step fall) astringes Lung Yin and treats cough in typhoid.
Niuxigen (Achyranthes root) promotes urination, moves Blood, manages gout, and assists sinews and bones.
Jingjuzi (Local citrus) promotes urination, disperses cold, reduces distension, and treats jaundice.
To disperse, remove Lung wind, use Suye (Perilla leaf). To direct Qi downward, remove hypochondriac pain, use Suzi (Perilla seed).
Xiaozhangzi (Small camphor seed) drives out exterior cold and removes Qi pain. Liangsanzi (Umbrella seed) resolves cold toxin and removes throat swelling.
To treat zombie typhoid, rely on Tiejiachai (Iron armor twig) and Yingyaogen (Hard medicine root). To remove malnutrition dysentery, use Baiyangmei (White bayberry) and Bai Aizai (White mugwort seedling).
Wuhoushi (Black monkey persimmon) treats malnutrition dysentery; Chuanshanlong (Sichuan dragon) removes cold causing heart pain.
Ganjuzi (Citrus fruit) benefits the Spleen and treats joint pain. Hutoujiao (Tiger head banana) expels the fetus and has the merit of breaking blood stasis.
Shandiangen (Indigo root) removes wind-cold, stops cough, promotes urination, and stops wind pain.
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) warms the Dantian, stops pain, transforms phlegm, and treats fullness.
Guoqiangfeng (Wall-crossing wind) treats internal injury; taken with wine, it removes urinary swelling. Baozichai (Baby twig) opens the chest and diaphragm; leaves resolve internal injuries.
Zifuping (Purple duckweed) releases the exterior with sweat and treats abdominal pain. Roupao Pi (Meat throw skin) promotes urination and removes edema.
Jingjie (Schizonepeta) dispels wind; adding roots treats hot strangury. Dajia (Large shell) harmonizes the Liver; leaves remove hypochondriac pain.
Dayepo (Big leaf aunt) treats hard corpse typhoid, nourishes Blood to reduce pain. Wuqincai (Black celery) treats women's blood stasis, dispels wind to regulate Qi.
Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) opens the Heart orifices, resolves Qi stagnation, and transforms phlegm. Yangdailing (Goat bell) treats lung abscess, transforms pus-blood, and treats bone pain.
For jaundice and back carbuncles, nothing beats Huangbotegen (Phellodendron root). For body pain and bone soreness, use Huanghuazicao (Yellow flower child herb).
To retreat deficiency swelling and attack wind promoting urination, fully take Shan Nanjing Xian (Mountain Nanjing Amaranth). To eliminate abdominal distension and break Blood to expel the fetus, solely use Liangtougencao (Two-head root herb).
Wujuecao (Black fern) treats pain in ribs, waist, and knees. Meizizhao (Plum seed兆) treats bloody strangury and postpartum wind.
Xiamezi (Shrimp grub) transforms wind-phlegm, should be flushed with home-brewed wine. Pu Dizhong (Local bell) stops cough, must add duck meat.
Shanchaihu (Mountain Bupleurum) soothes the Liver, treats Spleen swelling, and removes chills and fever. Luducao (Green poison herb) promotes urination, removes deficiency distension, and treats postpartum wind.
Shangaoyao (Mountain ointment) clears summer-heat, astringes essence, and treats headache. Jiandaocao (Sword knife herb) treats hematemesis, reduces swelling, detoxifies, and treats bloody strangury.
Jiasichai (Fake dead twig) removes internal injury; leaves treat dizziness of head and eyes. Hugua Gen (Cucumber root) treats malaria; seeds treat hypochondriac pain.
Aijiaocha (Short leg tea) treats scabies and has the merit of stopping cough. Wusecao (Five-color herb) treats breast sores and has the effect of treating metrorrhagia.
Honghuaer (Red flower son) harmonizes Blood, disperses Qi, and removes cold. Zhubicao (Bamboo broom herb) removes pain, stops diarrhea, and warms the middle.
Tuzaoji (Earth stove chicken) transforms phlegm-saliva, dispels wind-cold, and directs Qi downward. Weilingxian (Syneilesis acaulis) removes Spleen cold, treats heart pain, and further promotes urination.
Chunshugen (Toona root) benefits wind-dampness, kills parasites, and is needed for metrorrhagia. Yizhihua (One branch flower) removes cough, warms Blood, and can be used by parturient women.
Zaitianbo (Field planted spinach) warms the Spleen, removes stasis to generate newness. Wuyaozi (Magpie seed) soothes the Liver, regulates Qi, and stops diarrhea.
To remove trauma, use Tianlagen (Heaven spicy root). To treat bone pain, use Hongguzi (Red bone son).
To drive wind-pain from joints, Shan Lizhi Gen (Mountain Lychee root) comes first, followed by Jin Maotou (Golden cat head).
To attack amenorrhea blood stasis, Sansanqi Gen (Notoginseng root) is slow, while Qichaigen (Paint twig root) is faster.
Yueyuehong (Monthly red) regulates the timing of menstruation. Lanbangen (Orphan class root) treats joint pain.
Ru zhicao (Milk grass) removes cold and has the ability to set bones. Zhendonghua (Needle winter flower) treats cough starting from extreme Spleen deficiency.
Ruixiangen (Auspicious root) treats cough, promotes edema, and can treat lower back pain.
Di Yang Mei (Ground strawberry) expels the fetus, stops painful injury, and treats leukoma.
Maotaogen (Peach root) treats finger swelling and toxicity; Yexiazhu (Night pearl) treats post-abortion metrorrhagia.
Bajiubo (Dove spinach) induces sweating to reduce fever; Jimunpi (Chicken gizzard skin) digests food to strengthen the Stomach.
Tiandi Ji (Heaven Earth Auspicious) mixed with rice wine treats hypochondriac pain. Hujiaocao (Pepper herb) removes heart pain and treats leukoma.
For falls, reduce bone swelling, rely on Chiguo (Red melon?). For abdominal pain, clear summer-heat, use Xiangru (Elsholtzia).
For heart pain, transform cold phlegm, use Xiang'eryou (Fragrant son oil). To support the soft waist, stop heart pain, use Laohuci (Tiger thorn).
Zhangchaipian (Camphor twig slice) dispels wind, removes swelling, and treats heart pain. Guilongteng (Ghost lantern vine) removes toxins, treats sores, and dispels wind-heat.
Goujiaoji (Dog foot print) reduces edema and removes leukoma. Zongshugen (Palm root) expels dead fetus and treats turbid urine.
Zhimumateng (Pig mother vine) treats dysentery with special efficacy. Renhec ai (Renhe vegetable) directs Qi down like a god.
Dazhu Gen (Tartar rugosa root) removes malaria. Taoshuye (Peach leaf) treats headache.
Randancao (Dye morning grass) dispels cold and has the effect of generating Blood. Xiangconggen (Fragrant onion root) opens Heart orifices and has the merit of tonifying Kidney.
Mabiancao (Verbena officinalis) breaks Blood, expels the fetus, and treats heart/abdominal pain. Guoshanzhao (Mountain pass beacon) dispels wind, regulates Qi, and removes Spleen-extreme malaria.
Huajiaogen (Peppercorn root) treats heart pain, removes dampness, and reduces edema.
These ninety-five heat-natured herbs are thus noted.
(III) Ode to Warm-Natured Herbs
Medicines with warm properties are recorded here.
Shan Renshen (Mountain Ginseng) tonifies Qi and strengthens the Spleen; Jinyingzi (Cherokee Rose Hip) benefits the Kidney and secures Essence.
Banyanjian (Half salt alkali) removes Lung wind, stops cough, and transforms phlegm. Yejuhua (Wild Chrysanthemum) generates new Blood, removes pain, and dispels wind.
Jin Shiliu (Golden Pomegranate) disperses wind-cold, strengthens the Spleen, and stops diarrhea. Gusuibu (Drynariae Rhizoma) treats fractures, nourishes the Kidney, and removes pain.
Liquecao (Li Que herb) disperses cold and stops diarrhea. Xilongcong (Stream cage green onion) removes jaundice and tonifies the Kidney.
Huanghua Jinguo (Yellow flower golden turtle) removes stasis to generate newness and is excellent for stopping cough. Yangbusicao (Sheep won't eat herb) harmonizes Blood, nourishes the Kidney, and is particularly good at opening orifices.
Ye Mujin (Wild Hibiscus) treats lung abscess, breaks stasis, and treats diseases of vomiting pus. Shan Wugong (Mountain centipede) treats band snake bites, dispels wind, and can expel postpartum stasis.
To remove Spleen cold, use Di Luohan (Earth Arhat); for deficiency diarrhea, use Diqiegen (Earth eggplant root).
To calm the fetus and benefit joints, require Aigeng (Mugwort stem). To treat rib pain and stop vomiting/diarrhea, use Shidi (Persimmon calyx).
Hongquzigén (Red yeast root) treats snakehead toxicity. Guolu Wugong (Passing road centipede) treats water-dampness diarrhea.
Ye Xicao (Wild mat herb) removes dampness, strengthens the Spleen, and treats jaundice. Chi Quzi (Red yeast grain) reduces distension, stops diarrhea, and can treat edema.
Chunya Gen (Toona bud root) removes cold malaria and uses astringency for seminal emission. Gaohuawan (Gaohu bowl) removes stagnant Qi and abdominal pain.
Weidoucao (Weidou herb) treats watery diarrhea, mixed with wine. Shanqiegen (Mountain eggplant root) removes wind-diarrhea, using the root.
Tiexianteng (Iron wire vine) removes hypochondriac pain, treats hernia, and cures jaundice. Songshugu (Pine mushroom) removes every-other-day malaria and stops hematemesis.
Jijiaoji (Chicken foot print) dispels wind, stops dysentery, and treats metrorrhagia. Mantouzi (Steamed bun seed) treats lockjaw and reduces throat swelling.
Shanxiangfu (Mountain Cyperi Rhizoma) disperses Qi stagnation and nourishes Blood. Tiema Bian (Iron horse whip) treats dysentery, stops pain, and releases the exterior.
For trauma cough and moistening Lung, use Datou (Big head); for calming convulsions and breaking stasis, use Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis).
To remove bone-steaming fever and tonify Kidney, He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) is accurate. To treat head wind and calm the fetus, Ye Zhuma (Wild Ramie) is unquestionable.
Zijin Teng (Purple gold vine) treats abdominal pain, stops diarrhea, and cures dysentery. Tang Feng Teng (Sugar bee vine) expels wind, nourishes Kidney, and treats rectal prolapse.
Bimazi (Castor seed) can expel non-viable fetuses and retained placenta. Tienniu Guan (Iron cow貫) resolves acute phlegm-abscess and internal injury cough.
Shan Huangjing (Mountain Polygonatum) tonifies Kidney and calms Spirit. Guazi Jin (Melon seed gold) stops cough and benefits Kidney.
For breast swelling toxicity, use Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba). For throat obstruction, use Wu Bu Cai (Don't pick herb).
Regarding Shi Shu Zhao (Persimmon tree兆), it dispels cold and removes joint swelling/pain. Sitie Jin (Four paste gold) expels toxins and treats blood痞 (mass) due to closure/stagnation.
Shan Qiaomai (Mountain buckwheat) disperses cold and removes external swelling toxins. Zhenzhu Bao (Pearl treasure) treats wind and eliminates abdominal distension shape.
Qianren Che (Thousand person pull) can lift large intestine prolapse. Tie Wutong (Iron parasol) can eliminate Spleen-extreme affliction.
Yaxiongcao (Male duck grass) tonifies Spleen deficiency and removes malnutrition accumulation. Mu Jie Gen (Wood solution root) nourishes Lung Yin and benefits Spleen/Stomach.
To remove cough and promote urination, use Shan Yan Zhu (Mountain rock pearl). To treat postpartum cold-stasis, use Shatangzi (Sand sugar seed).
To remove abdominal pain and blood stasis, Yi Mucao (Leonuri Herba) is miraculous. To break stasis and clear wind-heat, Heshazi (Grass kill seed) is very effective.
Lie Zhayi (Hunter garment) treats transverse delivery and expels the placenta. Xiangyuangen (Fragrant citron root) eliminates Spleen-extreme and removes痞 Qi.
Shanliaocao (Mountain knotweed) reduces abdominal distension. Wua Long (Five-claw dragon) treats metrorrhagia.
Jiu Jupi (Old orange peel) transforms cough-phlegm; Ding Feng Chai (Set wind twig) stops lower back pain.
Biao Chaigen (Flag twig root) can treat postpartum chills/fever. Bin Feng Chai (Betel twig) can treat knee pain after illness.
Laoya Cao (Old crow herb) treats bloody strangury and rectal prolapse. Shanmuxin (Fir wood core) promotes water-dampness metabolism and treats leukorrhea.
Guogai Tan (Pot lid charcoal) ground into powder treats heart pain. Shui Liu Hua (Willow flower) mashed and applied treats flying ulcers.
The nature of these sixty-six warm herbs should be examined carefully according to symptoms for treatment.
(IV) Ode to Neutral-Natured Herbs
Herbs have neutral properties; physicians should remember.
Zhulizi (Cornelian cherry seed?) strengthens the Spleen and treats metrorrhagia. Niurugen (Cow milk root) nourishes Kidney and stops cough.
Ping Feng Shu (Screen maple tree) pacifies Liver/Lung fire. Qu Mei Cao (Qu Eyebrow herb) stops water-dampness diarrhea.
Doujiazi (Bean pod seed) removes malnutrition and calms infantile convulsions. Laoya Ban (Old crow half) treats chills/fever and treats painful spine carbuncle toxicity.
Taoren (Peach kernel) breaks Blood, widens intestines, and treats headache. Baihe (Lily bulb) clears Lung, removes cough, and treats rectal prolapse.
Shan Sharen (Mountain Amomum) removes distension, warms Stomach, and calms the fetus. Shan Gancao (Mountain licorice) clears heat and detoxifies, and further harmonizes herbs.
To purge Liver fire and remove leukoma, use Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba). To widen chest/diaphragm and reduce distension, use Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride).
Feng Caozi (Wind seed) clears heat and detoxifies, treating infantile convulsions. Yimi Gen (Coix root) strengthens Spleen, transforms phlegm, and treats lung abscess pus-blood.
These fourteen neutral herbs should be selected and used.
Summarizing all these green herbs, there are two hundred and ninety-one in total, all passed down by predecessors. Their properties are cold, hot, warm, and neutral; relying on successors to select and use them prudently is key.
Medicine began with Qibo and Huangdi, herbs from a hundred plants. Although each family records them, without an ode it is hard to clarify. The properties of herbs are first categorized as cold.
Guanyin Zhu (Avalaki Bamboo) moves Blood and clears Metal (Lung); Fo Jia Cao (Sedum lineare) detoxifies and reduces swelling.
Liu Yue Shuang (Six Month Frost) stops spasms and calms fright, also treating Lung heat coughing blood.
Wu Lu Bai (Five Road White) detoxifies and transforms dampness, further treating flowing fire gout.
Tie Liang San (Cool Umbrella) and E Wei Zhu (Goose tail pearl) benefit the throat and pacify Liver; Jin Gan Jing (Golden sweet essence) and He She Cao (Crane tongue herb) promote urination and purge Lung.
To moisten Lung and remove phlegm, there is Shi Lian Hua (Stone Lotus Flower); to settle asthma, there is Pen Yu Cao (Basin fish herb).
To pacify Liver and activate collaterals, there is Peng Lai Zhu (Penglai Bamboo); to clear Blood, use Fo Sang Hua (Bodhi Mulberry Flower).
Ci Lan Hu Lu (Thorny Tiger Blocking Path) detoxifies and kills bacteria; Dao Gua Xian Ren Zhang (Inverted Hanging Cactus) reduces swelling and settles pain.
It is heard that Tan Hua (Epiphyllum) pacifies Wood and clears Metal; Lü Cao (Law Grass) strengthens Stomach and benefits Qi.
Dong Gua (Winter Melon) and Ku Gua (Bitter Melon) promote urination and relieve vexation/thirst; Zi Shen (Purple参) and Ku Shen (Sophora Root) clear Blood and are used to expel parasites.
Hai Tong (Sea connection) is suitable for bias; Bian Xu (Polygonum aviculare) has the power to unblock strangury.
Bai Bu Sha (White cloth sand) clears Metal and stops coughing blood; Huang Tian Zhu (Yellow India Lotus) purges Wood and relaxes sinews.
Guan Zhong (Dryopteris crassirhizoma) clears intestines/stomach, stops metrorrhagia/leukorrhea, and transforms bone fishbone.
Lou Lu (Euphorbia humifusa) pacifies Liver/Lung, dispels wind-dampness, and unblocks breast carbuncle.
Jiang Mo Chu (Magic Pestle) disperses Qi and avoids warmth; Xian Ren Zhang (Cactus) reduces swelling and removes stasis.
Also, Feng Wei Cao (Phoenix Tail Herb) has merit for coughing blood; Ji Guan Hua (Cockscomb) is effective for pain/dysentery.
Bo Ling Cai Gen (Spinach root) unblocks intestines/stomach and resolves alcohol toxin; Shui Fu Rong Hua (Water Hibiscus flower) clears Lung/Liver and detoxifies swelling.
Ji She Cao (Chicken tongue herb) and Xia Mo Cao (Shrimp grub herb) detoxify and unblock strangury; Hu Er Cao (Tiger ear herb) and Mi Hou Tao (Kiwi) cool Kidney and clear summer-heat.
Ye Qing Zai (Wild Green Child) is cooling; Yang Liu Gen (Poplar Willow root) moves water.
Entering Liver/Gallbladder to resolve stasis knots, mostly use Bai Mao Teng (White Hair Vine); unblocking Triple Burner and benefiting wind-dampness, further use Zi Zhu Cai (Purple Bamboo Vegetable).
Shui Fu Lian (Water Lotus) reduces swelling and drains pus; Bai Cha Hua (White Camellia) cools Stomach and stops bleeding.
An Hai Dou Pan Cao (Anhai Bean Slice Herb) stops hematemesis and treats vertigo.
Sichuan Jin Qian Cao (Sichuan Coin Herb) stops hemoptysis and treats cough.
Also, Xian Zuan Cao (Immortal Drill Herb) strengthens Heart; Ren Zhu Cao (Human Bamboo Herb) pacifies Wood.
Huang Hua Cao (Yellow Flower Herb) detoxifies and kills parasites; Bai Mao Chuan (White Hair String) further reduces swelling.
Xiao Shan Hu (Xiaoshan Tiger) unblocks meridians and dissipates nodules; Shui Xian Hua (Narcissus) is only used to dissipate carbuncles.
Treating ringworm, there is Ye Luo Fu (Wild Radish); clearing summer-heat and dispersing wind, use Feng Bu Dong (Wind Does Not Move).
Shan Dou Zi (Mountain Bean Son) calms cough and treats heat dysentery possibly; Shang Ji Cai (Upper Self Vegetable) brightens eyes and benefits various stranguries excellently.
Ye Zhu (Wild Ramie) treats erysipelas; Zi Gen (Paulownia root) treats heat strangury.
Again, Shuang Long Xu (Double Dragon Beard) invigorates Blood and promotes urination; Qi Jie Mei (Seven Sisters) moves Qi and drains pus.
Bai Hua Ci Ci Rong (White Flower Thorn Rong) unblocks joints; Bai Hua Feng Bu Dong (White Flower Wind Does Not Move) invigorates Blood and relaxes sinews.
Ba Jiao Gen (Banana root) resolves heat-toxin and clears Stomach fire; Luo Pei Cao (Conch Weed) treats edema and further treats trauma.
Bai Shi Shu (White Stone Yam) removes ding sores/carbuncles; Long She Cao (Dragon Tongue Herb) clears throat accumulated malnutrition.
Xian Di Yu (Fresh Sanguisorba) stops and astringes; Xian Di Gu (Fresh Lycium Bark) is cooling; Shan Huang Hua (Mountain Yellow Flower) clears and resolves; Tu Huang Bo (Earth Phellodendron) purges heat.
Yu Zhan Hua (Jade Spoon Flower) resolves various toxins and has the ability to expel bone fishbones; Fu Lao Cao (Ancient Old Herb) dispels wind-swelling and eliminates jaundice effects.
Lu Sun Gen (Bamboo Shoot Root) purges Lung heat and wheezing; Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex) removes wind-dampness bi-numbness.
Thus, Ma Chi Xian (Portulaca Oleracea) moistens intestines/stomach; Gou Wei Cao (Dog Tail Herb) drains Bladder heat.
Pen Lian (Basin Lotus) disperses stasis; Huang Du (Yellow Poison) removes phlegm.
Tian Jie Cai (Sky Mustard Herb) detoxifies; Tian Men Dong (Asparagus Root) nourishes Kidney.
Xi Gua Pi (Watermelon Peel), Huang Gua Pi (Cucumber Peel), cool Lung/Stomach and treat jaundice;
Bai Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizoma), Xian Lu Gen (Fresh Reed Rhizoma), clear Liver/Lung and stop vomiting/reversal.
Kui Cao Tou (Mallow Head) transforms phlegm and promotes urination; Si Gua Gen (Luffa Root) detoxifies and penetrates sores.
Tu Mei Hua (Earth Plum Flower) generates fluids, stops thirst, clears summer-heat, removes vexation, and Tu Yin Hua (Earth Silver Flower) detoxifies.
Bai Hua Cai (White Flower Vegetable) dispels wind, removes bi, detoxifies, and cuts malaria; Bai Zhu Cai (White Bamboo Vegetable) promotes dampness.
Again, Sang Shu Gen (Mulberry Tree Root) drives out wind; Dou Pan Cao (Bean Slice Herb) transforms phlegm.
